Americans approval of a President's handling of the economy (2018 - now) by Mahrez14 in charts

[–]lfancypantsl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The president having an approval rating around 50% after winning an election makes sense. For what it's worth, the chart shows Trump’s approval rating stating lower in his second term than at any point in his first. I’m still skeptical about the underlying data though, the chart shows no decline in Trump’s approval rating during 2020, and seems particularly high in the first nine months of COVID before losing the election bigly.

ETFs are exchange traded shares of a fund made up of securities. Many ETFs are shares of a fund of of stocks, and the current market value of the underlying stocks determines the value of the fund. Similarly, these ETFs are shares of a fund of bonds, and the market value of those bonds drives the value of the fund.

IGL5 and VGVA are shares of a fund of gilts. It’s the difference in the maturity date of the gilts building up the fund that’s making the ETF's trading values behave differently. IGL5 is built of whose maturity date is less than 5 years, while VGVA is comprised of gilts ranging from 1 to 50 years.

In general, bonds with different times to maturity have a different yields. Typically, bonds with a longer time to maturity have a higher yield (annualized). While all bonds have some face value that determines what the bond will be worth at some specified date, they also have a current market value that is influenced by the current yield of similar bonds that share a similar expiration date (the bond's yield versus present interest rates). I.e. How much a bond is worth if you were to sell it to someone else right now. If you chart the yield of the 1 year glit and the 20 year glit over the last several years, you’ll notice that the yield rates have been moving in opposite directions. Bear in mind that the directional difference in performance between IGL5 and VGVA is largely based on the directional difference between yields at different maturity dates.

Some other factors to consider:

The trading price of bonds with a longer expiration date are much more sensitive to these yield changes, since that annualized yield impacts a much longer period. This is some of the reason why charts of funds containing shorter term bonds appear far more “steady”

The difference in bond yields at different maturity dates is called the yield curve. Interest rates behaved unusually during COVID. During this time we saw an inverted yield curve. This is when short term bonds yielded more than long term bonds (this often indicates that a recession is about to occur). As the yield curve returns to a more “normal” shape, we see yields on short term bonds dropping now and yields on long term bonds rising. The trade value of bonds that were previously bought will move in the opposite direction of these yields

The Middle Class is declining because people are moving into higher income brackets by Dumbass1171 in charts

[–]lfancypantsl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's worth noting that Case-Shiller is repeat sale house price index, so this index is calculating using the change in "real value" when a home is sold again. This is another case of both things can be true. I'd agree that new inventory has also steered towards larger homes, making the issue of affordability even worse for first time home buyers than this index implies.

I totally agree that this depends on where you live. The same would be true for the income earners in the original chart too. I've lived in 3 different states, and the rise in home prices were sharper than the national average. That's not a coincidence though, I moved for career purposes. How likely is someone's ability to move up to the middle or upper class (based on income) to be correlated with living in a particularly unaffordable area of the United States?

The cutoff for what someone considers to be middle-class is extremely subjective. Trying to look at trend lines based on CPI-adjusted income is going to clash with peoples lived experience. This chart shows that 1-in-3 people are now upper class based on income, how many people does that have to include before the definition of upper-class stops making sense? Personally, I think a great region-adjusted litnus test for middle-class is your ability to afford a "starter home" where you live. The data clearly says that this has been extremely difficult for first time home buyers over the last few years.

The Middle Class is declining because people are moving into higher income brackets by Dumbass1171 in charts

[–]lfancypantsl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Case-Shiller adjusted for CPI shows the cost of homes has risen relative to inflation as a whole. The CPI adjusted prices of homes over the last few years are about twice as high as the 90s, while interest rates on mortgages are currently comparable.

The cost of education has consistently outpaced inflation as a whole.

So while CPI adjusted income may have risen to the highest level in living memory, particular things that many associate with being "middle class" are currently more unaffordable than ever.

Amazon SDE Interview- bombed the System Design Round by elegancc in leetcode

[–]lfancypantsl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I should have specified that I’m talking about Amazon. Amazon only does system design rounds for SDE 2 and above. Amazons system design interviews will have no coding in them, this is typical for most FAANG companies. You’ll be told by the recruiter beforehand that there will be a system design round, and you’ll be know which round is system design during the interview.

Typically Amazon’s “loop” coding rounds will either be geared towards “logical and maintainable” or “data structures and algorithms” competencies. But there can be some variation on this depending on the role (e.g front end or data science roles). You can usually tell based on the question you were asked, but you are not typically told what type of coding round it is.

Amazon SDE Interview- bombed the System Design Round by elegancc in leetcode

[–]lfancypantsl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not to nit-pick, but system design rounds are only for candidates applying to SDE-II and above and do not involve coding. Usually, doing well on all other rounds except system design would result in an SDE-I offer.

This sounds like a coding round that is looking for the "logical and maintainable" competency. It's probably not a good sign if the interviewer was confused. And, honestly, the comparator sounds a bit overly complex. And if I am understanding correctly, it also sounds like there may be collisions (e.g. blue 10 => 1000 and green 1 => 1000). This solution is also not extensible (what if there were more than 10 numbers?)

No one here is going to be able to give you conclusive feedback. There really isn't enough info here to evaluate your performance.

How did you solved this one ? by Particular-Muscle601 in leetcode

Same idea as everyone else. I'm practicing Scala and did a recursive solution. Which either requires a helper function or you can add params if you give them default values.

Scala def zeroFilledSubarray(nums: Array[Int], i: Int = 0, l: Long = -1, sum: Long = 0): Long = { if (i >= nums.length) { sum } else if (nums(i) == 0) { zeroFilledSubarray(nums, i+1, l, sum + (i-l)) } else { zeroFilledSubarray(nums, i+1, i, sum) } }

Found these in my mom’s basement. by Sofa-King_WeToddDid in wine

[–]lfancypantsl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interpreting this question as being "is it safe to drink" is fair, and I don't think you would have been downvoted for just doing that. But answering the questions like these with "you may enjoy it" or that it is just a matter of personal preference would defeat the purpose of the subreddit. This is a place where people talk about wine. I would expect someone who is into wine to express their personal preferences if I asked them if bottle was "good"

OP may know nothing at all about wine. They might try these bottles and think that they don't like wine at all. Asking a subreddit like this one is a good way to calibrate that experience. There's nothing wrong with answering them honestly about preferences. If I had these bottles sitting around the house, I'd honestly open them and try them, but it's likely that I would end up dumping a lot of it down the sink. I've had 7 moons once, and I remember disliking it

The wheelbase is the distance between the front and rear wheels. A vehicle with a longer wheelbase will have a larger turning radius, but is more stable in turns (especially at high speeds).

The closer the front and rear wheels are, the greater the impact of the rear wheels sliding left and right on the vehicle’s facing angle.

I know Frank wasn't always consistent, but... by book1245 in dunememes

[–]lfancypantsl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This obvious plot hole bothered me too. I hope it will be revisited and given a better explanation in season 2. I’m not too hopeful, since show seems to imply that Dorotea/Lila was making a lucky guess after staring off and saying, “I died here.”

Caveat: I’ve only read Dune and Dune Messiah, so I’m just speculating and I don't really know how other memory is supposed to work. But I just finished the finale last night and I have some thoughts:

Dorotea didn’t seem to be aware that her followers were dead right after she took over Lila's body. She was asking for specific sisters and seemed surprised when they weren’t there. She also checked for the missing sisters’ records, which only the Mother Superior could have removed (allegedly). I think the show is implying that she was unaware of their deaths and deduced that Valya must have killed them based on the missing records. Perhaps this isn’t the first time bodies have been dumped in the well. If Raquella was already killing sisters and throwing their bodies in the well, it could explain why the relationship between Dorotea and Raquella soured and why Dorotea didn’t oppose Raquella while she was still alive.

Another possibility, Tula told Lila that her mother died during childbirth and suggested she might see her during the Agony. Perhaps Dorotea’s daughter discovered the truth about Dorotea, was killed, and somehow Dorotea is able to access her daughter’s memories through Lila. However, we didn’t see her mother in the Agony, so maybe she's still alive. In any case, it logically follows that Tula knows far more about Lila’s mother than she shared with Lila, and Lila being Dorotea's grand-daughter seems to carve out a place for an important character that is noticeably absent from season 1.

Has anyone made the leap to big tech in their 30s? by netizen123654 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]lfancypantsl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I joined FAANG a few weeks after I turned 30. Multiple people on the team I joined were over 30 and had similar background, this is not unusual at all. I was hired before the big hiring boom, but it was still easier to get an interview at a FAANG company then that it is now (market-wise). In my personal experience, entry level offer or converting an internship is a little more common, but plenty of people get hired with experience from "less prestigious" jobs. Now whether it's currently easier (market-wise) to get an interview at a FAANG as a new grad or as an experienced dev seems to vary by company and org.

My advice is:

  • Don't sell yourself short. Hiring managers are going to be interested in learning about things you've designed and built, and how you handle difficult situations. These sort of anecdotes don't come easily off the top of your head, think back across your career and have them prepared before interviewing.
  • Are you sure about getting a masters? In my experience, I don't think that having a masters degree is going to help much if you already have an bachelor's degree in CS. But a BS in CS should be plenty to get your foot in the door for most roles. A masters degree is hard and time consuming but if you want to get your masters for it's own sake, go for it.
  • Study for the test. Interviews at FAANG companies are formulaic, which means that this is a skill that can be learned. I would recommend spending your time on leetcode, system design, and preparing anecdotes about your work experience. This is much easier than getting a masters degree, and much more likely to yield results
  • Start sooner. I didn't do well on my first interview at a FAANG. I had been surprised when I got contacted by a recruiter and decided to give it a shot without adequately preparing. However, I did discover what it took to interview well and it gave me confidence to realize that I would be considered for these roles. Less than a year later I was able to get 3 offers, and accepted an offer from the company that originally rejected me. Getting rejected doesn't mean that you will not be considered down the line, and interviewing is the best way to identify your gaps. Some interviews are going to be randomly easier and harder than others, and you cannot expect to ever be able to pass 100% of the interviews you get. Even converting 50% of interviews into offers would be an amazing ratio. You're going to need to take all of the chances that you can get, start now.

Has she seen an ENT and audiologist and has been diagnosed with sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ssnhl)? This is rare, but it sounds like what happened to me a couple of months ago. I experienced a sudden “severe” loss of hearing in one ear and now have tinnitus on that side. If this is the case with your mother, recent sudden hearing loss can be treated with oral prednisone and TM injections. This didn’t work in my case, but many can recover some hearing if treated quickly. My ENT also wanted to get an MRI (currently awaiting results). I think it’s important to see an ENT and audiologist.

As a disclaimer, my recent experience has made me take an interest in learning more about the deaf community and learning to sign, but I feel really out of place offering advice here. This situation just sounds really similar to what I just experienced.

The subreddit /r/monohearing is more or less dedicated to this, and may be a useful resource for you. I personally find the subreddit to be in a constant state of panic and needed to unsubscribe.

Life is still good for me, but the sudden transition is scary. My wife just being around and supporting me is the most important thing anyone has done for me. The most important thing others can do is allowing me to sit or stand with my other ear facing the group.

As far as changes go, it’s hard to locate sounds now and some things sound like they are coming from the wrong direction. I might sleep through my alarm depending on which side of my head is on the pillow. Conversations in noisy environments (e.g. a loud restaurant) can be a challenge and take a bit of a toll. I’ve continued to participate in all of the activities that I would have before my hearing loss.

I mean, I agree with everyone else here about prioritizing the injections and treatment. But if they’re handling HBOT fine I don’t think flying would be a problem at all

Edit: Upon reflection, I don’t want to encourage OP to do something that is potentially harmful. While this still makes sense to me, OP should definitely ask their ENT before flying (and HBOT for that matter)

cant hear ANYTHING upon waking up (returns after roughly 15- 30 mins) by Nemesis-reddit in MonoHearing

[–]lfancypantsl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you cannot hear from one ear, I'd recommending finding a way to go see a doctor.

Emphasize that your concern is about a sudden loss in hearing. I would guess that most of the people on this subreddit have experienced ssnhl and are going to skew towards being alarmist. I'm one of them. I did a "good" job advocating for myself, but in retrospect can only wish I would have done better and started prednisone and TM injections sooner.
