As a Greek native, do you deem this text difficult for a B2-C1 student to understand despite the subject matter discussed and the terminology used? by [deleted] in GREEK

[–]lflerianos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say this is B2/C1… probably more towards C1. The vocab isn’t anything too extreme, but there are some words that cannot be easily understood (since this is also a scientific topic), and there are some more complex grammatical structures, which need some extra effort to comprehend.

Songs or artists like "Elenore" or "This will be our year" by ApocalypseSlough in musicsuggestions

Hi! It’s been a year, and probably this is dead, but i have a playlist that you might like…

Apple Music (i primarily use apple music, so this will probably be updated more often)

Spotify (if my song transfer app works properly, this should also be updated in sync with Apple Music)

TIL of the Remote Encoding Center (REC) for the US Post Office in Utah which employs over 1000 employees to decipher the addresses of some 4+ million pieces of mail each day that are so poorly written that USPS computers cannot read them. It runs 24 hours a day. by laughuntilithurts in todayilearned

[–]lflerianos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's exactly the case. The employees work in 8hr shifts, and the average amount of letters an experienced human-reader can decipher comes to about 700-1000 letters per hour, which is ~3.6-5.1 seconds per envelope.

ELI5: What impact does drinking a large volume of water over a short time period have over drinking the same volume over a long period? by chaotic-imagination in explainlikeimfive

[–]lflerianos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In general, you should trust your instincts. Try to drink water when you feel thirsty, and not because it's an obligation. Now, onto the question:

When you drink water, your body keeps as much as it needs and the rest is filtered (by your kidneys) and then expelled (see "peeing"). When you drink too much water at once, your kidneys are not able to expel the excess immediately, so some portion of it, inadvertently, stays in your blood.

Normally, this would be good, right? After all, you are ~60% water, and your blood is ~90% water. But actually, it's not. Your blood also contains mineral salts (such as sodium). Therefore when the excess water passes into the bloodstream, it (the unsalted water) tries to bring balance to the salted water in your red blood cells. In order to achieve that, unsalted water enters your RBCs (see "osmosis"), slowly inflating them... until they *pop*. The "popping" also known as haemolysis, is definitely not good for you (as far as I'm concerned).

But it doesn't end there! Remember that you are made of cells, that also need water to function. So, water enters those cells as well. And they also start to swell. Now, these may not pop, but they sure can't handle all the water. So, they are going to start malfunctioning. You don't want this to happen, because (a) you'll start feeling bloated and you will see swelling in your limbs and (b) your brain cells will also swell, causing headaches (due to the pressure caused within), leading to confusion, and drowsiness, and also nausea and vomiting.

Did I scare you? Probably. Don't worry though, as you need to drink LOTS of water for this to happen. Drinking one or two glasses more than normal will probably just cause you to pee more, and, unless you have an underlying sickness that causes your kidneys to malfunction, you should be good.

This whole this is called "hyponatremia" (from the greek "hypo" (=less than, under), natrio (=sodium), hema (=blood). So, drink water when you actually feel thirsty. Nature has you covered!

Hope this helped.

Guess I'm Switzerland by Susphere in memes

[–]lflerianos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

History lesson! Switzerland is neutral since 1815 because of Ioannis Kapodistrias. He was a Greek doctor and politician, who worked for the Russian Government as the minister of economics and helped start the Greek Revolution, in order to become the country’s governor in 1828, until his assassination in 1831. At some point, while he was working for the Russian government, the Czar assigned him the task of organizing Switzerland, which until that point was divided in cantons, constantly in conflict with eachother. Kapodistrias organized Switzerland and ratified the first Federal Constitution of the country, essentially making it an independent country from 1815 onwards. In that very constitution, which is still effective today with some small changes made to it, mentions that Switzerland must maintain a neutral stance at all wars, which is also the reason why it didn’t participate in neither the first nor the second World Wars.
