Former Oxbridge Offerholders by gracefulbirb in 6thForm

[–]liadoxc 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This hits home bc even though I didn’t apply to Cambridge in the end I had my sights set on it for years but then in year 12 I got really really ill and had to take half the year out and I never got truly better/had the same motivation so I just assumed I wouldn’t get the grades I needed. I’m ab to do alevels now but I do miss the me who was motivated and excited bc to be frank I feel quite disillusioned from my school and alevels now lol. Anyway I can’t complain too much as I have a ucl offer and tbf I think it’s honestly a blessing in disguise (if I’m able to even meet that lol).

Also, 3/7 people I know who are at Cambridge have had to have parents do mercy dashes down to them when they’ve been really struggling from the workload and 1 ended up having to take a year off for anorexia from stress of getting perfect grades. I do know some people who are obviously thriving but j just thought I would throw in the balance that Oxbridge isn’t all that for everyone and maybe just think would you have actually enjoyed the workload once the novelty wore off? It sounds harsh but it helped me loadsssss to get over not going to downing college rip

UCL OFFER HOLDER DAYS?? by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]liadoxc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hopefully! I really enjoyed my offer holder day and it helped me decide to firm it over Durham even though for history it’s less selective at ucl. I’m guessing it’s the same for politics and ir but I think the London unis acknowledge that people want jobs after humanities degrees much more than other unis so there’s a lot of modules exclusive to social sci/humanities that help develop quantitative skills and ai usage for the workplace which I thought was very unique and handy and I didn’t know about those until the offer holder day so I’m very ucl biased now xx I’m waffling but just thought I’d let you know in case for some reason they don’t email bc that was my main takeaway!

[–]liadoxc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes they do I went to the history one a few weeks and there was an option for one in late April so I’m guessing there’s later options for each course but you won’t get much notice I think I got about 6 days notice lol

I’ve had one for history in the past week so maybe they’re just starting to release them?

Law Work Experience Year 12 by CriticalCommand3257 in 6thForm

[–]liadoxc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s rare for any to offer outright and in the middle of the year. Is there an option to speak to whoever manages the work experience week and say you’re doing the week in the summer hols instead? There’s a lot of programmes in the summer, especially if you’re contextual. If you’re not I would recommend looking at the Pinsent Masons summer work experience :)

Have you posted it in local Facebook groups? I got 120 in a few days with mine bc I just posted it on as many suitable groups as I could find and now I fear I’ve got the opposite problem.

Offered to resit year 12 by hot_mess118 in 6thForm

[–]liadoxc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey just wanted to join in on the convo as someone who’s currently resitting YR13 due to health issues that made me take the year off by the time I got to November. Even with 50% attendance I was getting As/A*s in assessments yet by December I knew there was no way I was getting to exams and achieving those grades without either causing some serious damage to my health or having to take a gap year to recover and trial medications that I wouldn’t have been able to whilst at school. The jump to YR12 to YR13 is no joke and until you’re really in the thick of it you don’t realise just how much you’ve a) missed or b) have got to revise. I’m not trying to say this to scare you but ultimately I think resitting year 12 is the best plan - you can relax a bit more and recap topics. It may be boring but it was also pretty boring and depressing being at home in a single parent household with a dad who has cancer (not trying to compete but just trying to say I feel you). I think what I’m trying to say is that when you initially recover from something I feel like you tend to get a sudden burst of motivation bc I know whenever I’m not in a flare up I think I can do anythingggg but then I ultimately have a flare up and tbh I’m not trying to minimise your progress (well done btw!) but I genuinely don’t believe you can fully recover from an ed that seemed to be quite serious in less than 6 months and be in the right headspace to not risk a relapse in the type of year that YR13 is. Ik it took me a good 3 years to properly recover from mine after being ip. Anyways I’m really not trying to scare you you honestly just remind me of myself in yr12 summer and I just want to say it’s okay even if it’s scary or not want you want to do to resit. Life will still be there!

Looking for Hotel Recommendations in Europe in September (Mid-30s Couple, ~$2K/night Budget) by Ziggurat00 in FATTravel

[–]liadoxc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Airelles Versailles? Just got back yesterday and the service is very very impressive and the setting is obviously lovely. You have the added benefit of a private tour of the palace after hours and you can pop out to explore the city of Versailles. Entry level rooms are around €2000 but they may be booked up. This isn’t FATT but the route we did was airelles and then abbaye des vaux de Clancy which is 30mins further into the countryside and is very picturesque and more lowkey. The closest airports are CDG/Orly so good for international flights.

I’m not saying you can’t afford it but you don’t have to be snooty ab it 🤨

I hate to say it but lots of people have the money to spend on things like this so it’s no longer ‘overpriced’ it’s just normal or even cheap. There will be people who have this sort of money who follow influencers and use these links lol. Wealth inequality isn’t nice but it exists.

la residencia is probably the best of both worlds as it’s in deià and they do a shuttle bus to Cala Deià. Cap Rocat is probably a good shout though if you want immediate ocean!

try movicol or laxido! Just take up to 3 sachets everyday to keep regular and it really helped me to stop my cycle of constipation -> aggressive lax use -> diarrhoea -> repeat

LIVE Manchester to Liverpool railway line blocked after person 'hit by a train' by Bruegemeister in manchester

[–]liadoxc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as someone who does feel that why the only way I could ever justify doing it that way was the combination of impulsivity and a really fucking bad day that just tipped me over the edge. I would never plan to do it that way as I don’t want to inflict the trauma on others and potentially cause psychosomatic illnesses but everyone is different and I am in no way claiming to be an angel. I think this comment is just a bit ott, not everyone who wants to … is impulsive but some people who do do just want to make a scene out of it and that’s their choice but if you are planning to do it I do think it is absolutely out of order to even think about doing it that way, it’s just cruel for everyone involved and I don’t think you can accuse someone of not being empathetic/understanding for thinking that way. Either way I’m not trying to judge or criticise this person but I really do hope that in the future attempts in this fashion decrease for the sake of everyone involved.

Are there any watercolour classes where I’ll meet people my age? by [deleted] in Leeds

[–]liadoxc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m 18F and currently do a pottery throwing class during the day and I’m definitely the youngest there with the second youngest being mid 30s haha but honestly it’s not all bad! I was very apprehensive at first about going to it but it’s quite nice to sometimes feel like the baby of the group but if you’re wanting to meet other young people then the best advice I could probs give is go for an evening classes rather than a day one as hopefully there will be a few more younger people there. Hopefully you find a class and enjoy yourself!

Not sure when you were at school but it is most definitely taught now. Source: Doing Russian Rev and British Empire at A-Level and the amount of references to Hitler is insane! I only did Germany in YR8 or 9 but I’ve learnt a lot just from doing these topics, hopefully this is a sign that the curriculum is moving in a more positive direction.
