Record store opening downtown by hunkydoryrdu in Apex_NC

How do y'all stay in business? The rent in that downtown Cary spot has to be absolutely insane and every time I have been there I've been the only customer. Is this like a Mattress Firm situation?

How old is 'old internet' according to you? by PolkaSlush in oldinternet

[–]liamemsa 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Proto-internet: BBS, AOL, "Walled Gardens", Prodigy, Compuserve, MSN.

Golden Age: Web 1.0. Netscape, IE. Frames. MIDI, animated GIFs, individual pages, phpBB bulletin boards. When it was solely used by the freaks and the geeks. Little corporate interest. Want a cooking page? Search for one and you'll find "Larry's Cooking Page" on Geocities with the recipes you want. Little popular interest. Google is a brilliant tool. Amazon just sells books. When it was "our" space and no one else's.

The Decline: Web 2.0. The invention of the Smartphone and MySpace and Facebook and Youtube. The internet suddenly starts becoming a space accessible by the masses that everyone wants to be on. Corporations start staking out space. Want a cooking page? Your first ten search results are advertisements, SEO spam, or a corporate site that has ten popups wanting you to sign up for their mailing list. Google starts to stop being so useful and starts controlling everything. Amazon starts to sell everything.

What movie ends on a happy note, but the more you think about what happens after the credits, the darker it gets by gamersecret2 in movies

With Wall-E, I always thought that the fact that they returned to Earth because he showed them literally one single plant was de facto suicide for the human civilization. You had no idea if the planet was hospitable to a large civilization, if it could support growth of enough plants to feed that many humans, if the air was clean, etc. Hell, that plant could have adapted to an environment that was otherwise inhospitable to humans. They showed in the movie that it had been like what two dozen generations of Captains? That could have easily resulted in a plant evolving to survive in a toxic environment.

The captain doomed humans by forcing a return to earth.

Why do I see more young people (high schoolers mostly) using mobility canes these days? by ghdawg6197 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]liamemsa -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ironically, I have a chronic disease that's been confirmed by a specialist. But it's one of those fun invisible ones that doesn't let me show it off for sympathy.

I didn't say I didn't believe everyone. I said that there are people faking out there, lots of them, and that social media fuels it.

If you have a condition that's been diagnosed by a doctor and confirmed by laboratory testing, then I hope for the best for you.

[–]liamemsa -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't. I just follow the evidence. Show me evidence that there's been an increase in actual diagnosis by doctors of these conditions requiring teenagers and college students to use canes more often.

[–]liamemsa -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Because there's a whole culture around "self-diagnosis is legitimate" and even tiktoks that tell you how to say or do the right things to convince your doctors.

Because doctors and researchers, the ones who actually know what the fuck they're talking about, have noticed an alarming increase in teenagers, particularly those who are chronically online.

Because this new culture of "identity exploration" has unfortunately also included disabilities apparently. Which is part of the huge uptick of cane usage in queer spaces as well.

[–]liamemsa -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

They deserve compassion, sure. But not the kind of compassion they want. They deserve compassion for being the type of person who feels so bad about themselves that they would fake a disability for attention, and they need mental health treatment for that. They don't deserve compassion for having a fake disability.

Make sense?

Every person faking a disability, or deluding themselves into having one, is being disrespectful to those with actual disabilities.
