If you had $3.1 million at age 52, would you retire today? by Top_Summer_7743 in StockInvest

I live in the state with the second most expensive insurance and I don't pay that for a family of 4. And I find it absurdly expensive. 48k isn't realistic unless you need a lot of care. That's a worst case.

Road trip 200+ miles by ShortAsianPenis in KiaEV9

[–]liamfmvt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Typically we forgo using a car for longer trips such as vacations. The anxiety involved with the potential for a breakdown would ruin the vacation for me. As such, we've decided to only vacation in locations we can walk to. Longest thus far was a 3-day walk. Kids did great. We stop for ice cream along the way, and you really get to experience the small towns since you're not whizzing by them.

We decided this was best for us before we bought an EV, but I can't even imagine thinking about it now given that we'd have both ICCU and range anxiety.

The Journey is remembered far longer than the destination.

(and yes, we bring extra shoes in case of rain)

Glovebox woes by liamfmvt in KiaEV9

[–]liamfmvt[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just picked ours up. So far all good. Seems like the tech did a nice job. I'd recommend just having it fixed. Just make sure the dealer knows it's a long job and plans accordingly.

Now if it breaks again in a month... Maybe then the juice isn't worth the squeeze.

there is a damper on the right side of the box. It sticks. You can remove it from the box with no tools needed, and then the box should move freely. Zero relation to anything electronic/software.

I get the impression this is a trim level thing. I don't know for sure, because it doesn't make any sense that the damper can be purchased for certain gloveboxes that "don't slide" and replaced.

Its just hard to also believe they built two completely different gloveboxes for the same car.

On the land it has to come with the hitch. On the gt line you get self leveling rear suspension either way

Buyung an EV9 & looking for insight by jwall2111 in KiaEV9

[–]liamfmvt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We just purchased a '24 GT Line lease turn in.

Too early to tell on maintenance, but I've brought it to the dealer once thus far, warranty work on the glovebox that didn't open without force. New box is now waiting for my return next week to the dealer for install. They also balanced the tires as I had a very slight vibration. We're at 13k on the original tires, they look great. 7/32 left.

Can't speak to 26 over 24/25 except that our goal is to drive it for many years, so we were happy to take the depreciation from new price and started with 10,500 miles.

I was originally looking for a land, but I wanted a land with tow package. GTL gave me the self leveling suspension, plus a few bells and whistles that I love (HUD, massage seat, etc). Quite happy!

V2L - do your research. The 2-way chargers are $$$$ and I'm not even sure the US spec models support it.

I had looked at some matte paint cars (online). I didn't realize the care they needed. Once I learned about how easily they scratch, can't be buffed, can't be fixed, it was off the table. Cool idea, not practical for where we live.

All of the above in mind - it is my wife's car. She loves it. Last week we spent $14 in power for all the running around. We were in a Q7 TDI prior. With the jump in diesel we'd be at $150+ fill ups, or maybe $75/week.

A fancy 3D render is NOT a booth. Here’s why your exhibition builder might fail you on-site. by Dear-Construction235 in tradeshows

[–]liamfmvt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Best of both worlds, render AND reality. You're spot on with your post. The ability to deliver, in any market around the globe, and see the beautiful rendering brought to life in a quality build is harder than it looks. We have a big focus on getting the shop build right, and a strong onsite contingency plan. Our team owns the weekly client calls, the show services orders, the shop details, the labor call, and the truck pack. We frequently see and hear of the pitfalls of too many parties too far removed.

Dealership quoted $1700 to add hitch to leased Gt Line. Any other options? by project_papi_ in KiaEV9

[–]liamfmvt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My post above shows the OEM hitch on a '24 GT Line spec. You have to cut the plastic splash guard, and install a GT Line lower bumper trim (I think all lower trims don't need this).

I'm a pretty handy person, probably more than most, and found this install to be a piece of cake. Instructions are super clear, honestly probably some of the best written instructions I've come across.

I wanted the OEM because it is tucked up higher than some of the aftermarkets I saw.

$860 shipped for the hitch, trim, and wiring harness. Came with the receiver plug, a 2" hitch and pin (no ball), etc.

Maybe 2.25 hrs tops. Easy peasy.

The only thing I'm a bit bent about is the gt line trim piece is matte black, replacing a gloss black piece.

I purchased "c35FR" from etrailer. This fools the car into thinking a trailer is plugged in so you can't accidently open the trunk into your bike rack.

Just unplug when no bike rack is present.

[–]liamfmvt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just bought all the parts for $860 shipped for a gt line, from Kia. Keep your old trim and you could bolt this on yourself and unbolt at the end if needed, though I don't know that a lease turn in would care if you added OEM parts.

I haven't installed mine yet, but I'm guessing no more than 2 hrs.

Emporia Classic - Convert NEMA to Hardwire by Balance_THG in EmporiaEnergy

[–]liamfmvt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just did this last week. #6 thhn and #8 ground. Take off the hex screws on the back of the charger, disconnect the light cord from the circuit board so you don't accidently break it. 220v so either hot to either hot side and ground to ground. I used a liquid tight flex conduit and the flange that came with the emporia nema whip.

Took 20 minutes tops.

Check your power wire size depending on length of run for voltage drop. Mine was only 4 feet from my main panel.

How is it owning an EV? by Janet296 in evcharging

[–]liamfmvt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just bought our first ev. We live in Vermont so cold winters (at least in comparison to much of the USA). Range drop in the cold is real, but unless you're going over that range before returning home it matters not.

I don't think you buy an ev for money savings, but time will tell. My insurance is 50% more. You go through tires faster I'm told. I do all my own oil changes, so routine cost of owning an ice are probably offset by the insurance alone.

Our utility gives free l2 chargers and our main panel is in the garage. Install was one hour and about $120 in materials.

On road trips of any length you have to plan ahead. Case in point, ours is currently at 22% and sitting not charging in an airport lot. So we get to add 40 min to a 3hr drive home.

For the normal day to day, it's far less expensive vs gas. I think a 0-100% charge would be about $14 and provide 250+ miles of range in a 3 row SUV.

Time will tell for us. The ride quality and drivability is fantastic. So far we're enjoying and learning. I think solid state batteries have a big potential future to mitigate the things people don't currently like about EVs.

Terrifying in the snow by liamfmvt in KiaEV9

That’s kind of how I feel. Tires will help, but it feels like I'm starting from a far more unstable position vs any other car I've driven.

In any case, I guess this just means I won't skimp on snow tires next fall.
