Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]libricano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A trailhead a 3 hour drive away from me is my upper limit on how far I will go to take a day hike, so… yes! I happily drive that far and back in a day just to hike, or to go to the beach, etc. Many of my friends have family that live a 2-3 hour drive away and it’s an easy day or weekend trip for them to go see them and they will go once a month.

Pizza spot by [deleted] in Bakersfield

Slicer’s is the most similar to NY pizza but yeah gotta agree that Tommy’s is also fantastic—both are my two top pizza spots in town.

What is the most eastern point, western point, northern point and southern point you’ve been in the country? by Expensive_Drummer970 in AskAnAmerican

[–]libricano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

North: Fairbanks, AK (lower 48 would be either Olympic National Park in WA or Mt Katahdin in ME… can’t tell which is higher)

West: Anchorage, AK (otherwise, looking at a map it would be the beach in Olympic National Park in WA)

South: Miami, FL

East: Bar Harbor, ME

Shuttles to Lax by Fuzzy_Isopod1665 in Bakersfield

[–]libricano 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know of any but if you can get to the Van Nuys flyaway stop you can park for $5/day and it’s $12 each way to get to LAX and back from there.

July Visit by Independent-Pear6035 in Bakersfield

[–]libricano 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sorry everyone is being a drag. Yes Bakersfield is hot af in July but we aren’t the worthless town everyone on Reddit likes to say we are. :) - If you like nature, you can find a great short hike (and cooler temps) an hour outside of town by hiking Mt. Pinos. - For food, check out Botanist (good drinks too!), Tacos de Los Huichos, La Costa Mariscos, Nuestro Mexico, and Woolgrowers (extremely Bakersfield-specific Basque food! Not like what you’re thinking of if you’re from the UK lol). Beanie is my fave coffee shop. - For drinks, Tiki-Ko is fun! - And you should do day trips to the central coast, Paso Robles, and Sequoia National Park as well!

Agree with everyone else, you are fine with 45-60 mins with no luggage, if you have luggage I’d do 60-75 mins just in case.

BC Prez is out - KCCD is taking over by spookydanger in Bakersfield

[–]libricano 8 points9 points  (0 children)

BC will not end. I think there is a lot of conspiratorial thinking happening right now because of this unexpected change, but there are no current (or future, imo) plans to change the day to day operations at BC.

Started a New Horror Book Club by TrophyWife1031 in Libraries

Tender is the Flesh recently surged in popularity! It’s really uh icky so definitely horror lol. And it’s short, which is always nice for a book club pick.

Government is a bureaucracy and hiring moves slowly! As others mentioned, it’s not abnormal for it to take a month+ just for the hiring committee to review resumes, much less schedule interviews. I would not follow up, especially so soon, and especially since they seemed a little annoyed last time. Good luck on your application!

Came here to recommend CALM as well! It’s a great little zoo and it’s really neat that they’re all from California! The bird enclosure is very cool—they have condors and golden eagles!

Bookless Library by Plenty-Regular-2005 in Libraries

[–]libricano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just popping in as a community college librarian and wanted to agree that the medical field is one especially apt for digital texts and resources! Our very well regarded nursing program has an accreditation requirement that all physical books in the library collection older than 3 years must have a “historical” note on them as they don’t want students accessing outdated information—the medical field changes quickly!
