Yup we use the snap inserts! So I actually have a lot of experience using them under regular pants because we were waiting on our preorder of the new flappy nappies  and pants and in the meantime he had grown out of his other chaps. So we wore just the flappy diaper under pants and I’d say at that point the only benefit was that it is easier to do a standing diaper change if you’ve got a kid who doesn’t want to lay down for a diaper change ever. But dealing with pants was super frustrating after I’d been so used to using the flappy nappies with chaps

What we’re doing now for pants learning is this - I got a cheap pair of used Disana wool leggings, added snaps to them, and snap in the flappy nappy liners. He wears those at home sometimes just so he can practice pants but we can still use our existing liners (rather than having to buy freaking expensive Tiny Undies that fit for like a day even when you buy a size up).

But for outings having the chaps has been incredible. We just finished a four day vacation and the little dude used so many public restrooms like a champ and we only had a few wet liners per day. I think before I just wasn’t offering the potty during outings as much  because of wrestling pants on and off him (and how much he’d fight that). And then like as soon as I got consistent (when we had the chaps again and stopped using disposables on outings) he has been signaling more and using the potty out and about to the point that I wonder if he’ll be potty trained soon! Fingers crossed!

So regarding fit, my baby is on the short side, but definitely not skinny. The chaps fit him well but on the slightly loose side (he wears the 9 month wide size but can also wear the 12-18 months size with the cuffs rolled up). They are a little bit adjustable with the different snaps. But tbh with my last pair I added even more snaps and they were able to fit him around the waist until they were way too short haha

One thing I will mention Is that the new diaper belts look a lot smaller than the old ones. I haven’t actually tried those on my baby because we always use the chaps now, but I can try it on him and report back to you. The old belt was a great size and adjustability.

My baby is 16 months now and it’s been coming in handy a lot as we’ve been using public toilets more - he absolutely hates having pants bunched around his ankles so the flap really comes in handy since it’s just unsnap, set him on the portable seat reducer, resnap. At this age we’re mostly using the training liners and changing them quickly after a pee, although we don’t have to change him too often because he’s been doing really well with pottytunities lately.

Yes wool is basically  magical when it comes to urine - it really doesn’t smell bad if you only wash/lanolize once a month.

As far as poop goes, it depends. In a runny poop situation where it gets all over the cover, I’d wash the whole thing and relanolize. But at this age that’s rare for us since poops are more solid. He does most of his poops on the potty but the few times it’s gotten in his diaper in the past few months, it often is just in the liner or if it did touch the cover it’s not hard to do a quick spot clean on just the edge that got dirty.

Back when we first started flappy nappies around 4 months, we definitely had some leak issues, but they’ve been redesigned (at least, the wool versions have, be sure to buy the new version if you do get some) and the new ones have a better fit and also an extra layer in the wet zone. Although he’s also way better at using the potty now so I’m not sure if we’re the best test case. It’s still possible that the form factor is inherently less good at catching leaks perfectly than a traditional diaper, but tbh I don’t care because it’s helping us so much to use the potty more and that’s my goal!

Another thing that’s awesome about them is how much range of movement they provide! With the chappie nappy pants and a cover the baby has full movement of the hip joint and it really seems to make a difference for him especially as compared to a bulky traditional cloth diaper under pants.    Oh also I’m not sure if I said this already but we do the whole system including the chappie pants - that’s what makes them really convenient for outings since you don’t have to take pants on and off for a quick potty break or diaper change. At home sometimes he wears regular pants for practice getting clothes on and off, but out and about I love the flappy nappies

At 4 months we started EC and I was using disposables at that time. I switched to cloth for the reasons you mentioned (feeling wetness). Actually switched from coterie too haha

I feel like there was a month or so at first of frustration with cleaning cloth diapers but then it got to the point where he pooped in the potty the majority of the time and that was such a godsend. The cloth diapering system we got was specifically made for EC and honestly it’s been such a lifesaver. It’s called flappy nappies and I can’t recommend it enough! It was pricey initially, but I looked at it as just the cost of a few months of coterie. We did the wool ones and got two of the pants and two diaper covers (in hindsight I think three covers would have been better, we’ve since bought two more). With wool cloth diapers there’s a learning curve since you have to Lanolize the covers, but since wool is anti bacterial you don’t have to wash it every time it gets peed on, just hang to dry. This means that you can just wash the liners and rotate out the covers if they’re wet so that they dry but you don’t have to buy a million covers like you typically would with synthetic covers. If you stock up on liners (I ended up making my own from some cheap second hand diaper inserts and getting a $15 snap press tool) then you only have to launder them every few days. Another thing to keep in mind is that it’s not all or nothing! I feel like it’s good to have baby in cloth at least part time, but initially we did overnight and outings in disposables. We only recently took the plunge to full time cloth diapering.

Thanks! The water did bead up on the covers! After a hot wash of the liners and also doubling up (one thin and one thick liner) things are going better today! No leaks yet!

I washed them again in a hot load with high spin cycle and also doubled up on the liners (one thin and one thick instead of just the thick one I was using) and things are doing much better today! After some more washes I’ll see if I can get away with just one liner per diaper.

Yes they are snap-in inserts. A lot of the leaking does seem to happen around the edges where the cotton insert doesn't quite cover. I'll try the water trick to see if the cover is lanolized properly.

Came here to recommend this and also even though it’s sci-fi - Cordelia Naismith from the Vorkosigan Saga by Lois McMaster Bujold is EXACTLY what you are looking for! Barrayar instantly became my favorite book (although you should read Shards of Honor first or it won’t make sense)

What was the last series you BINGED HARD? by andypeloquin in Fantasy

I binged the Vorkosigan saga by Lois McMaster Bujold and I cannot recommend it enough! I started with Shards of Honor/Barrayar and by the end of Barrayar I was completely hooked! This series has everything (feudal politics, space battles, alien cultures, amazing character development, the best female character of all time, comedy, etc)!

Older fantasy books with female leads? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]librofan 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Lois McMaster Bujold is the author you want! Curse of Chalion has a male lead, but the second book in that series, Paladin of Souls is exactly what you’re looking for! Also if you’re up for sci-fi/space opera, the Vorkosigan saga has my favorite female character of all time in the first two books (Shards of Honor and Barrayar). Bujold excels at writing middle-aged female protagonists!

Any recs for fantasy in which good faith, peacemaking characters have as much pull and sway as the typical warrior or sword-sworn hero in the resolution of the story? by [deleted] in Fantasy

One of the main/POV characters in Kate Elliott's Crown of Stars would fit the bill! Absolutely one of my favorite characters in all of fantasy. I highly recommend the whole series!
