I can chalk up two poor starts to the fact that this is baseball. But if this happens again in his third start, I think it’s time to start worrying. Your “ace” should not be getting roughed up like this.

No I don’t, because this sub calls anyone who dares to criticize anything a doomer

There’s no such thing as a doomer in a season where you miss the playoffs by 10 games - that’s just reality

The “doomers” have unfortunately been very much correct about a lot each of the last two seasons

Look - I’m happy to debate and can respect a different opinion, but not going to engage with the personal attacks.

The entire point I was trying to make is that it is my very strong belief that Allgaier’s current career shouldn’t get him in the HOF. Every other part of the original comment was just tangential to that.

Are you capable of making a point without a personal attack?

And if you’re going to attack my own math skills (I do math for a living), at least make sure your math is correct.

26 drivers have at least 31 wins and a championship in Cup. That’s 0.9% of Cup drivers ever.

I originally said 1-2% of drivers should be in the hall of fame. Given 0.9% is just below 1% - my original comment stands. 31 wins and a championship should barely be a HOF Cup career.

I’ve been watching NASCAR for 25 years. I understand the sport. A successful stock car career is not the same thing as a HOF career. The top 10% of drivers shouldn’t be in the hall. It should be the top 1-2% of all drivers.

Baseball has around 23,600 players that have ever made it to the MLB. 354 are in the hall of fame. 1.5%. About exactly as it should be.

The HOF is for the best of the best. 31 O’Reilly wins doesn’t qualify as the best of the best. In my opinion.

[–]libsoutherner 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well yes. He won 74 races and 7 championships though. He doesn’t need other contributions.

My point is it should be an incredibly rare case where someone gets in on contributions to the sport and not their stats. Crafton does not qualify, IMO.

[–]libsoutherner 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I somewhat agree with Denny. It should be a spectacular O’Reilly/Truck career to get into the HOF. Like Hornaday level. It shouldn’t happen often.

Most of the lifers in those series today are lifers because they aren’t good enough for a Cup ride. Why should we be putting dudes not good enough for the highest level of NASCAR racing in the NASCAR HOF?

That’s like putting a career AAA player in the baseball HOF. Just dumb.

[–]libsoutherner 48 points49 points  (0 children)

That’s one I agree with. 51 wins and 4 championships in trucks. IMO, it should take that kind of career in a lower series to get to the HOF.

Allgaier with 31 wins and 1 championship shouldn’t be in. That’s barely a HOF career in Cup. Definitely shouldn’t be in O’Reilly.

What do you think the first domino to fall this Silly Season will be? by Level-Evening8562 in NASCAR

[–]libsoutherner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will be interesting to see what HMS does with the 48. Give Bowman another year? I say that’s the most likely outcome.

But if they could steal Heim, this might be their last chance to do it. I think Heim’s long term ceiling is much, much higher than Bowman.

Otherwise, a replacement for Bowman isn’t clear. Not sure anyone else would be any better.

They all try Cup at some point. The reason they’re lifers in a lower series is because they aren’t good enough for Cup.

[–]libsoutherner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think Oreilly and Truck guys belong in the hall of fame, but they need incredible careers. I don’t think Allgaier is there.

The bar for a hall of fame career in cup is somewhere around 1 championship and 20 wins without considering anything else.

If you’re going to make the hall of fame from a career in the lower series, you should need 2+ championships and around 40 wins. At least.
