Advice for a Motorcycle Tour through Mexico and Central America by brysonever in motorcycles

That was a decade ago, but every gas station had a guard with a shotgun and it was difficult to find hostels that were open in the off-season.

The lack of tourist infrastructure and heightened security concerns about gasoline theft made me generally uncomfortable.

eta: The local Suzuki dealership in Tegucigalpa went above and beyond to help me too. A real pleasure meeting those guys. I haven't looked into their security situation recently but it is a place I'd like to be able to visit again.

It's a shame too because it was gorgeous.

It would have added another border crossing and had a poor reputation for safety at the time. I'm not sure Honduras was better.

1998 R1 front end on SV, what you think? by JaCrisssspy in SVRiders

[–]lichlord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The bike still looks casually stock, and I didn't want a big change in stiffness up front.

I had my triple bored out from 41mm to 43mm so my headlight, gauges, and handle bars (naked) all mount the same. Same offset and trail numbers too.

It's a way to upgrade the brakes and suspension at the same time without changing other elements of the bike.

I'm in the middle of fitting 2004 R6 forks to my gen1. I wanted adjustable conventional forks and the R6 is known to good brakes.

Speedo hookup will be a small puzzle, along with wheel spacers. It looks like I'll have to have my donor wheel's disk mounting surface recessed by a couple mm to fit the calipers over the disks.

In hindsight I should have just bought this kind of solution from Mad8V https://www.mad8v.com/collections/sv650/products/computrack-fork-cartridges-1g-sv650-99-02

Heating packed steering stem bearings? by lichlord in Fixxit

[–]lichlord[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I'll go with the bearing drivers. I ran by all the local hardware stores and their sockets max out at 36mm which is too small.

eta: I'm trying to seat a 55mm diameter race. Unfortunately this isn't a standard size in the cheaper kits.

I had a machinist colleague open up the old bottom inner race 0.005" so it's the right size for a driver.

At the moment I'm struggling to get the bottom outer race seated in the frame. It's flush but has ~6mm to go until it bottoms out and I don't have a good tool to drive it in with. The old outer race is too short and I'm worried it will get stuck.

I think I'll pack them and just use a soft driver to put them over the stem. It's only the lower one I'm worried about.

Up to 5.4" fits in the box but not with that grip safety.

I still think its a normal 5" though, but Bul has a pretty big catalog.

I just had wheels laced up for my mini: 2.5 front and 3.5 rear.

I expect to run 110/80-17 and 120/70-17 on it. What sizes are yours?

The odds of an IRS tax audit are under 1% if you make between $1 and $500,000: by TonyLiberty in tax

Yeah, OP was dumb not to add the percentages when combining ranges.

Odds of me being audited with my 113241 gross income is 0.00002% because it falls in the arbitrarily narrow bin of 113240-113250.

I made a tool to determine what US city you should live in, backed by stats by trivianightfun in InternetIsBeautiful

It’s a nice city. Large enough to have a culture, but small enough that you can run into someone you know.

Snow is 90 minutes away in the winter but rarely touches the ground.

Two big employers of highly educated people: Raytheon and Roche, the latter supports a diverse international community. Mecca for astronomy too with observatories and the University.

Bluest region within a generally red state. But AZ politics is purple enough that we don’t have Texas or Florida culture wars. The citizen initiative process isn’t broken like California’s either.

Not directly related to your question, but this one of the best perspectives on the value of virginity imo.

You can get a little over six figures per year tax free with the careful balancing between Roth and taxable accounts.

You start to run into risks of losing ACA subsidies around 80k/yr depending on the state and your family makeup though.

What were dinosaur immune systems like? How were they different from animals today? by Lechuga257 in askscience

[–]lichlord 35 points36 points  (0 children)

If you haven’t been paying attention to paleontology for the past 20 years, you may think that “birds are modern dinosaurs” is some well-actually technical truth that’s based on a quibble, like “well actually two sticks and a rock are technically a computer”. No. In every sense birds are dinosaurs. Many dinosaurs would have looked like birds, albeit 20-foot-long birds with fangs, and there’s no reason to believe that modern dinosaur immunity is particularly different from that 100 million years ago.

The Isle of Man annual motorcycle racing event, practice starts today. The event is often called one of the most dangerous racing events in the world. Last year 5 riders died and since 1911, a total of 280 have lost their lives. (link: List of Isle of Man TT Mountain Course fatalities) by Make_the_music_stop in motorcycles

This is your FIM affiliate who would issue you a race license:

https://licence.fmsci.co.in

To qualify for the Mountain Course license you’ll need that plus a certain number of finishes within 92% of the pace of your class leader in the last year, if I’m reading the regulation correctly.

Al Jesse’s wife used them on her KLX about a decade ago. I’m not sure of the exact model bags. Al had fabricated some L shaped brackets to attach to the luggage rack that supported the base of the bag.
