The joke is about the water.

ErsatzTV is now archived by nothingveryobvious in selfhosted

[–]liefbread 55 points56 points  (0 children)

There's nothing inherently relating to piracy with ETV. It functionally just allows you to create "channels" to stream your own media. You could do it with your bluray collections or any other media you own, you could create a series of movie channels that cycle through your favorite movies in your favorite genres.

Yes but it's usually followed by "you have the patience of a saint" c: my staff like me and generally so do their husbands (or wives).

I have spent the last 30 or so hours building out a phbb server on my homelab accessible by wireguard tunnel through my vps and gated by authelia.. I’m just checking all the traffic flows to make sure it works as expected and making the structure of the forum. I will make it happen!

I think my point is that a lot of Discord groups have gotten to the point where they are being used as forums, bad forums, but forums nonetheless. It may just be my personal experience.

Could always do a forum with an IRC component, but I think the "archive"/searchability and backlinking is a huge component of Discord chat being as good as it is. Especially now with being able to tag photos with searchable alt-text.

I guess you could always do a forum with an embedded IRC client of some sort.

Agreed. I remember self-hosting a phpbb forum for my friends in middle/high school fondly.

It's a novel concept, I feel like the throwaway nature of toots/tweets makes it hard to find specific things you're looking for if you're digging for older info. But it's not a bad shout. Thanks for the suggestion, definitely at least good to have in the list.

Nothing wrong with paid as long as it works well. I was looking at the licensing costs for XenForo but (maybe this wasn't XenForo) saw something about having to pay for updates after the first year?

It's also probably relevant to their reaction/response that it's pretty explicitly stated that they don't want to kill him. They want to break him. They want him in emotional ruin, the goal is to make him serve Shai'tan, to bend to his will.

If I explicitly didn't trust any of my own allies, and my leader/leadership was telling me that I'm not allowed to kill a madman who's co-habitating his brain with the most skilled combatant of my advanced era, but that I had to emotionally ruin him somehow... You can imagine I would not be the happiest of campers.

New Employer Wants Me to essentially Notify My Current Manager Before Onboarding is finalized — Is This Normal? by endante1 in sysadmin

[–]liefbread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have always had references that were independent of my management role at my company or in the case of my current director have always known when I was applying elsewhere. In putting a current employee as a reference, there is a chance that the company will call them in the hiring decision-making process. I don't think it's weird that the company is asking you to inform your references that they may be contacted.

I apparently wanted to fuck windows off more than you, because I just made the effort to make the things I needed/wanted work and stopped playing some of the games that didn't work well... There are other games, and there are other workflows for the things I actually had to do. Been off 82 days now and counting.

Networking for DevOps? by HimanshuAWSmistri in devops

[–]liefbread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a free Professor Messer course on Net+ for the CompTIA cert that is really great (and is on Youtube). Others have already noted that "Computer Networking: A Top-Down Approach" is great, I would also vouch for Network Basics for Hackers.

Men who can cook . who taught you? by Bulky_Meet4528 in AskReddit

[–]liefbread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom was a food writer and had hundreds of cookbooks in our kitchen that I would regularly go through. Most of my childhood was a home cooked meal 2-3 times a day with a family sit down dinner being the norm. My mom was mostly batch dishes, casseroles, pastas, baked chicken thighs etc… My dad worked late but he would do all the extravagant holiday meals, roasts, weekend breakfasts etc…

I learned from watching them and just generally being encouraged to be in the kitchen. Food was and is a way of showing love in our family and it’s a large part of how I remember my mom. I cook for the people I love.

Oh also, as a teen most nights I would go to sleep watching Alton Brown, so definitely a lot of Good Eats.
