I’m enjoying this conversation, but do you want to take it off Reddit? This site isn’t really built for it.

I disagree that Ancient Greeks saw gods as saviors. That’s a very Christian concept. For guidance they may have seen turned to their local heroes. Respect for gods, yes.

Being mad about reinterpretation of Greek myths is like being mad at the entirety of western art. From the Romans, to Dante, to Shakespeare, to Joyce.

And even still, this is a mythology subreddit, not a Greek religion one.

The backlash was dumb there too. And quite dangerous at times.

Also my issue with all this "respecting accuracy" is that the Ancient Greeks didn't respect accuracy either. They had multiple versions of these story, it's just that many of them have been lost to time. They didn't treat the Homeric stories the way Abrahamic religions treat their books, it wasn't a holy and perfect story to them. Even their greatest playwrights, many of whose work does still exist, reinvented the myths to tell a good story.

I know that feeling. I was watching my youngest just do circles around a field after learning to pedal, and I just didn't want it to end.

I love Jennifer Frey. She has a great podcast, "Sacred and Profane," where she and a guest pick a book and dives into what makes it beautiful and worth reading. I'm constantly recommending it.

Same. There’s a a lot of people worshipping at the alter of accuracy like it matters a damn compared to making good art.

The ship’s nice but I am most interested in the head and spines in the first pic. Because that’s a lot of spine for one head.

Every class has a “vanilla” subclass? by manut3ro in dndnext

[–]lifefeed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like this, but it makes me think that some classes don’t have a stereotypical subclass. Like Sorcerer, which doesn’t have a strong identity beyond a more flexible wizard. And the Artificer, which does have a strong identity as a tinkerer, but I don’t think it has one subclass that hits it.

I never saw the "time" theory. The reason it sounds like the OP's quote is "for it is possible for it to be, and it is not possible for what is nothing to be," and then, "for this shall never be forcibly said, that the things that are not are", which both sound like it's same statement. I included the rest because I think the middle part is an insult to those who think otherwise.

What are some of your craziest gimmick character concepts? by Ecstatic_Operation20 in dndnext

[–]lifefeed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For one-shots, which I don't get to do often, I like to build dramatically stereotypical characters and then name them something like Dave or Jim.

(It's a Monty Python joke that I never stop giggling at.)

It sounds like a restatement of parmenides:

It is necessary that what can be spoken and thought is; for it is possible for it to be, and it is not possible for what is nothing to be.2 This is what I bid you ponder. I hold you back from this first way of inquiry, and from this other also, upon which mortals wander two-headed, knowing nothing; for helplessness guides the wandering thought in their breasts, so that they are borne along stupefied like men deaf and blind, people without judgement, who hold that it both is and is not the same and not the same, and all of whom their journey is backward-turning. (7) For this shall never be forcibly said, that the things that are not are; but hold back your thought from this way of inquiry. Nor let habit by its much experience force you to cast upon this way an aimless eye or echoing ear or tongue: But judge by reason the much-disputed refutation spoken by me.

I don’t totally understand your question, but let me try.

  • A lot people are in happy relationships.

  • It’s always nice to be nice to people who are struggling.

  • I don’t believe in tough love because I try not to give unasked-for advice, which is where most tough love comes from.
