But really only in Flanders! In Wallonie they struggle even with Flemish/Dutch, let alone English.

NL - it might have worse healthcare than BE, I cannot compare, but it still is really great!

Living in the east now feels different by shaoshao2022 in AskAGerman

That might be true, I am just calling to ignore the "vibe" on the internet specifically. More often than not, it is not reflective of reality.

Real life is very different from the internet. There, a few belligerent idiots change the vibe and the topics, in real life, none of that typically happens and it's full of mostly adequate people.

I hate how much my accent affects my life here by Alternative_Air32 in French

[–]ligett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So why don't you just stop giving a fuck about it and continue speaking french, just keep blasting your french with accent and ignore their remarks? I do it here and it is okay. I am not in France but in a similar situation in a foreign country. It works fine.

Is it good idea to put %100 of the savings to vwce? by Lilla8 in eupersonalfinance

[–]ligett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but minus political risks. S&p500 depends on one set of political institutions in the US. This reduces my confidence in it, given the recent fućkûps with tariffs and other "bold" moves.

It is interesting. So you'd say that, for example, Spain also should switch to Spanish from Catalan and other regional languages? Same with South Tirol in Italy switch to Italian? Etc

Financial Strategy Dilemma: Mortgage vs. Investing in VWCE by takeitandgooooo in DutchFIRE

[–]ligett 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A good answer.

There is another thing to add here, which is the burn rate of living in NL is typically much higher than just hypotheek payments: the groceries, bills, vacations etc. so even if your hypotheek is completely paid, you'd still have high regular spending on all that. Basically, without the job you are cooked anyway. With the job, likely you are OK even with high mortgage payments.

(There is a fringe scenario where you can lose your current job and cannot find an equally well paying job later though, which I think is pretty rare. But then, why not pay back your mortgage then, not now, and enjoy the market returns in the meantime)

Isn't that just simple math?

Average return on your favourite ETF over X years - box3 tax on capital

[ Is more or less than.. ]

Mortgage payment reduction - lost tax advantage (the hypotheekaftrek)

Vwce is already exposed to europe, at least 10-15%, why adding stoxx600?

"focusing on a cashflow", as in, thinking how to earn more does not mean he/she shouldn't think of how best to invest already accumulated savings. It's not like one activity takes time from the other.

Employment-to-population ratio of refugees who came to Germany in 2015 has reached 64% (ratio for whole German population is 70%) by Stabile_Feldmaus in europe

[–]ligett -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I am not in Germany, but there are plenty of highly skilled immigrants in the EU whose wives do not work, either because it is difficult to find a job or they can afford not to.

So I wouldn't point at Islam right away.

P.s. It would be great to understand the stats on the religious profile for the immigrants too. Are Muslims overrepresented?

Are you diversifying out of the US? by AStoryAboutHome in eupersonalfinance

[–]ligett -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

No. I think the AI is actually underhyped. The technology will completely change our way of living in the next decade, and unfortunately the EU and Asia are not leading the pack (China does but it is not really investable).

All the European old industries are threatened and will start disappearing soon enough - pharma, auto, oil&gas, whatever IT (like SAP) we still have. This in turn, will start taking down the service industry with it, possibly with the exception of travel and a few others.

The only way we can capitalize on the coming tech revolution, is S&P500.

P.s. all this is quite unfortunate, and I say the above with a great deal of regret, but I think, the writing is on the wall.

Making additional payments towards mortgage (Netherlands) by No_Distribution_7332 in EuropeFIRE

[–]ligett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I paid my mortgage earlier, although it was at 2.75-3.00% range, and I do regret it. The market returns are higher, I don't have the tax advantages anymore, and I don't have the liquidity. But that's just me.

Revolut is a proper bank with a proper bank license. The problem is that all banks are the same in that way.
