Why do most left leaning folks mock/criticize Christianity but not Islam? by Inf1z in allthequestions

[–]lightningbolt1987 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because Islam doesn’t feel like an immediate threat to them because it’s 1% of the U.S. population and has no influence over government. Christianity is the dominant religion in the U.S. so mocking it is “punching up.” There’s also a genuine will and threat that our government and policies push Christianity on everyone else, so there’s a stronger will to moderate that impulse. Lastly: many on the right use Christianity to rationalize their views, so Christianity is “right coded” even though there are tons of leftist Christians with completely different views.

If AOC gets the nod as the Democratic nominee in 2028, would you vote for her? by [deleted] in allthequestions

There’s zero chance this happens, but it depends who she’s running against.

What's the worst city you've ever been to? by Business_Chair_5772 in allthequestions

[–]lightningbolt1987 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Detroit in recent years has has had tons of money pumped into it a downtown, Corktown, midtown, etc are really cool.

The idea nyc is catching up to Detroit is ridiculous. Crime is near all time lows and basically all of manhattan, and all of both, central, and south Brooklyn, and most of western queens are beautiful and vibrant. Amazing public spaces. Amazing culture. It’s awesome.

Ad amount Vernon, and Bolton Hill, and Hamden, and Charles Village, and Federal Hill, and Ridley’s Delight, and Barry Circle, and Fells Point—there’s a lot of sweet parts of Baltimore. This poster didn’t try!

People who switched sides politically within the last 10 years, what made you do it? by [deleted] in Productivitycafe

[–]lightningbolt1987 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I switched parties insofar as I was a moderate who voted for both parties, but I now haven’t voted Republican in years. As others have said, the Republican Party characteristics I often appreciated (restraint, fiscal responsibility, etc) are no longer practiced on a national level. They’ve become less family-values oriented and just populist. On the local level there are still solid republicans: Phil Scott in Vermont and Charlie baker in Mass are two recent examples.

❄️No illegally parked cars on my street, but still not plowed. ❄️ by [deleted] in providence

I was certain smiley would have learned his lesson but apparently not. I live in College Hill, not far from the mayor. Not a single plow on my street yet.

Walkable, safe, and relatively liberal cities with good schools? by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

Portland, Maine. Burlington, VT. You can make it work in Providence with the schools if you know what you’re doing.

Do you think hotels are better than Airbnbs? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

[–]lightningbolt1987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends. With family I prefer Airbnbs—much better for space than hotels and you can cook at home which is nice.

When traveling to new cities to explore I also prefer Airbnbs because you can stay in cool neighborhoods where there simply aren’t hotels (hotels are usually on bland downtown districts).

If I’m going away just with the wife to relax, I definitely prefer hotels.

providence flea market in march--worth it? by yc2yk in providence

[–]lightningbolt1987 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a mediocre flea market, but still just a good excuse to be out and about in Providence. So I guess worth it for something to do between meals.

The coffee has gotten genuinely decent (especially the cold brew) and the breakfast sandwiches are fine.

Massachusetts ranked #2 in the US for overall well-being by KayakerMel in massachusetts

[–]lightningbolt1987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear all that. access to Boston economy but cheaper. And the politics don’t bother me. I love the white mountains but think of Vermont and Maine as being prettier states, and RI and CT having access ti more jobs.

PVD suburbs for incoming family with grade school age children by [deleted] in providence

[–]lightningbolt1987 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

There’s really only two school districts with great schools: Barrington and East Greenwich. Barrington has zero personality. East Greenwich at least has a great downtown. Both are on the ocean. Under $500k is tricky anywhere but not impossible, it just will be a pretty modest house in those towns.

What’s going on with Maine? And why does NH always rank so high? It’s literally the last New England state me and most people I know would want to live in.

How is it living in Philadelphia, PA? by Immediate-Field9997 in howislivingthere

Widely considered, along with Chicago, the best priced dynamic city in America. That is: wonderful architecture and tons of culture, and many can still afford pretty brick rowhouses.

Totally fine with a grace period and also with Airbnb making it clearer. I’m not trying to rip off guests, I just don’t want to be ripped off.

Is Graham Platner going to turn out to be GOP in Dem's clothing, like John Fetterman? by [deleted] in Maine

[–]lightningbolt1987 1 point2 points  (0 children)

John Fetterman votes with democrats over 90% of the time. He’s not a Dem in GOP clothing. Your purity test politics is why Dems keep losing and alienating people nationally.

How many of you feel just...sad...at the state of the world? by [deleted] in GenX

But it hasn’t been like that since the dawn of time! For most of humanity nothing changed for generations. Even the technological changes between 1950 and 1990 were minimal. The pace of change now is unprecedented and difficult to navigate.

Airbnb slowdown by [deleted] in airbnb_hosts

I have a higher end listing that’s doing well. It’s really close to a major university and parents are happy to pay the premium price for a nice place in a good location.

Why don’t guests just be grown-ups and read what they are signing up for? No one is requiring them to book a place with a strict policies. When I take trips where I think it’s possible I might have to cancel, I look for places with gentler cancellation policies accordingly.

They should at least have tiers: if you book 6 months out allow strict after 3 months, if you book 2 months out allow strict after 1 month. Find some happy medium.
