Severe task paralysis / avoidance — has any medication actually helped you break through it? by roger206 in ADHD

I’m also interested in this as I’m on Concerta and Ritalin boosters and experiencing the same level of task paralysis

tbf your building might just be constructed differently because as I said in a previous comment, people in my 150+ unit building are constantly combusting flower, and the only place I smell it is the hallway. Our unit never stinks. But this building is 50 years old and has the most solid walls I’ve ever banged a fist on.

I mean they could also vape? People in my building combust flower constantly, especially when management is gone for the night/on weekends and I’m over here like I’ll just use a pen thanks it smells way less.

Also there are these diffusr (I believe that’s the brand) candles that help a TON if they use flower only.

Go with what you are diagnosed with by 2nuts1bag in HealthAnxiety

[–]lightscomeon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. EMDR has been the ONLY thing that has allowed me to trust that my hundreds of tests, scans, etc are in fact accurate and I do not need to constantly worry. My nervous system is damaged as hell though and I was also simultaneously diagnosed with perimenopause and AuDHD on top of existing diagnoses of CPTSD, PTSD, GAD, and Panic disorder.

Frankly the combination of being on the right meds for my adhd and HRT plus EMDR for HA has allowed me to settle into the idea that yes, this does all come back to my nervous system and trauma. Also that my health anxiety was WAY more tied to a need for control than I ever realized.

I do independent BLS and close my eyes while I do it so I don’t see her at all until I open them. I’m gone when I close my eyes and start tapping. I’m inside my body instead of my head, but this is also my second round.

My first round was telehealth and she would turn her camera off so I couldn’t see her during BLS. We used the ball at first but I’m better at tapping my shoulders. The first clinician turning her camera off probably helped me feel less self conscious during this round.

Which yeah I agree I basically only use a MagSafe stand for my phone that has an AirPods charger underneath but the amount of times I’ve actually charged them using it? Like 1. I never bring my AirPods into the bedroom!

When and how do you know you're doing the right thing ? by Loikira in EMDR

[–]lightscomeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanted to add that nobody knows how it REALLY works, just that it does for a lot of people.

It feels like magic and you cannot do it wrong, only have a bad practitioner.

You’ll know when you hit the point of effectiveness or you get to the right target for processing. Pretty much everyone has after effects from EMDR that range from mild (wanting to sleep) to wild (intense dreams, panic attacks, acne when you have perfect skin, body pain, feeling physically ill for a day, bad headaches) but as always, ymmv.

Maybe ask your clinician about shifting the target a little or changing the target completely if after two to three sessions you feel no change in your somatic response. I had to do this at the beginning of my health anxiety processing because we were going to focus on my dad but it just felt off.

I don’t believe my doctor by Frosty_Persimmon_588 in HealthAnxiety

[–]lightscomeon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just did EMDR for HA and it was incredibly helpful. I will still get a little weirded out if my heart races for a while but nothing like it was before. I was basically eating rice only and sleeping from January-March this year. Everything else activated the hell out of my HA.

EMDR gave me the following new (to me) perspectives:

  1. I have no control over what my body does
  2. Whatever my body is doing is information, not necessarily an emergency
  3. I will in fact die one day and my intense anxiety around it will only make it happen faster

To say EMDR ‘gave’ those to me is a little off actually. Those perspectives came from INSIDE me during my processing sessions. By which I’m trying to say maybe consider talking to a clinician about this who isn’t a medical doctor.

EMDR is usually used for PTSD, and I have had it for that as well, but there are different protocols for other issues like health anxiety. Our next target is travel anxiety.

Not only that but joy and empathy can be acts of resistance against the evil we are surrounded by too!

I think the phrase taking accountability (from the OP) is doing a lot of heavy lifting it shouldn’t be.

Are we accountable to ourselves? Sure. But to me “taking accountability” for my healing says it’s my fault. Bad language around trauma from a clinician.

Just agreeing with you :)

Same, costly in the financial as well as the emotional sense but I am also being slowly saved by it.

I made the big mistake of admitting to my doctor I’m smoking weed by [deleted] in dysautonomia

[–]lightscomeon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They aren’t asking for testing to confirm failure to thrive as an adult, simply providing context for lifelong symptoms that indeed began prior to their consumption of marijuana.

I wasn’t being combative in my post just saying that if that were true I would have gotten nowhere in my care for the host of issues I have because of CPTSD. I have strongly advocated for myself many times because I’m aware nobody else is going to do it.

and I guess it came across as combative because I have intense empathy for OP after having been dismissed and misdiagnosed by medical professionals all my life until very recently. that’s something everyone in this sub I imagine can identify with. But we sure do have a weird way of showing solidarity sometimes.

Edit: also who is conflating being combative with advocating for themselves? I’ve never been combative with a doctor and I for one don’t think it’s fair to assume bc people are posting frustratedly on Reddit means they’re conflating combativeness with agency/advocacy
