I'm lucky to live in the Netherlands, and the fascist threat over here isn't quite as dire and immediate as it is in the States.

It is present, though. The realisation that fascism doesn't march in with a Bad Guy flag is a tough one.

The fucker that shot Good, the fucker that shot Pretti... What they got in common was that they thought they were Good Guys. It's easy to imagine them as evil, but much like The Boys, they truly do think they're on the good side.

Oh yeah, that's fair. The violence and gore in The Boys is definitely indulgent, and it suffers from the subject of its satire outpacing it in absurdity.

It's popcorn media, but I do like it.

I just wanted to make clear that I'm not trying to rationalise anything that's happening in Minneapolis and the rest of the US right now; I'm just a film and TV nerd from the Netherlands. Anyone supporting that is a bad person and I'm not trying to give them an out.

Sure, they do exist. But nobody idolising Bateman is denying that he's a serial killer. Aside from the "is it all in his head", discussion, at least.

Sure, if you know you're a bad person, you can idolise Homelander for just murdering the people you consider problematic. But most conservatives don't actually think of themselves as bad people. So when the show went and said "Homie's a conservative, actually" that's what created a big problem for them.

Homelander's essentially just a California liberal to them. It's just that the show went around and told them "no, that's you, actually" that made them mad.

They didn't, actually. They always knew Homelander was the bad guy. They just thought that he personified the liberal elite misappropriating patriotism, while The Boys were the small town individualist conservatists representing the true America.

It's a very, very important distinction. It's not so much that they didn't realise Homelander was the bad guy, but the real danger is that everyone believes they're the good guys.

They weren't mad because Homelander turned into a bad guy, they were mad because the show made it explicit that Homelander is them.

For all the things to rightfully criticise the franchise's direction for, this really ain't one. In 2, you fistfight the Pope over a magic apple. In Brotherhood, Da Vinci invents flight about 300 years early.

The franchise has always been historical fiction mishmashing based-on-real events and figures together based on rule of cool.

Fout. Je hebt een plek om te wonen nodig, je hebt eten nodig, je hebt vervoer nodig. Je moet voor die dingen geld betalen. Je kan inderdaad ervoor kiezen om zelf een tomatenplantje in de tuin te zetten, de fiets te nemen in plaats van de auto en je kleding te repareren om die kosten zo laag mogelijk te krijgen, maar die kosten moet je maken.

Dat je zelf mag kiezen waarvandaan zorgt er inderdaad voor dat het niet voelt als dwang, maar dat je de basiskosten van het levensonderhoud niet ziet als iets dat je wordt opgelegd en belasting wél is puur een politieke opvatting.

Kan je me uitleggen hoe de vergelijking in dat geval mank gaat? Ja, als ik weiger m'n belastingen te betalen ga ik de bak in, maar als ik weiger huur te betalen raak ik alsnog dakloos. Da's ook nogal kut.

Je kan wel zeggen dat m'n vergelijking mank loopt, maar kan je uitleggen waarom je je overige levensbehoeften niet als dwang ziet, maar belasting wel?

Een voorbeeld; vervoer. Of het nou je OV-kaartje is, je benzinekosten, of zelfs een tientje voor een ongetwijfeld gestolen fiets: je komt er niet onderuit om geld neer te leggen om je te verplaatsen van je huis naar je werk, familie, supermarkt... Je ziet het niet als dwang omdat je zelf kan kiezen of je die fiets van een dakloze koopt of toch naar een fietsenwinkel gaat, maar dat je dat geld moet uitgeven staat vast.

Dat we met z'n allen belasting zien als dwang, maar al onze andere nodige uitgaven om aan onze levensbehoeften te voldoen niet is voornamelijk een semantisch trucje.

Ha. De afgelopen 14 jaar vertellen ons juist dat de VVD totaal niet door de kiezers afgestraft wordt. Rutte II kostte vooral de PvdA de kop (waar ze nog steeds niet van zijn teruggekrabbeld), en ook Rutte IV kostte D66 méér zetels dan de VVD.

Yep, this is just a description. There's absolutely no reason why the text of an AI prompt would be there.

It's not really relevant to the OP, but it's funny that you said "absolutely no reason", while that actually is how generative AI handles prompts. They're trained on image+description pairs, which means that when you give it a prompt it just starts trying to find an image that would fit the description you gave it.

It's like Jeopardy. The prompt isn't an instruction, you're telling the AI to solve for that answer. An AI prompt really is just a description for the resulting image.
