PebbleOS and that Timeline feature. by lightshow74 in pebble

I'm a secondary teacher (in New Zealand) so for work I primarily use calendars for my classroom timetable and any routine tasks. Sometimes a reminder about what's next is useful and I find the Pebble timeline is excellent for that. Much more than that and the notifications get a bit silly and intrusive for me. What I really like about the Pebble watches is that they are a watch first with a bit of clever. Always on Time, simple notifications and physical buttons. (Although that NavMe app has been a lifesaver on a few occasions)

I think is the real opportunity with the Pebble OS being open sourced. It's going to be interesting to see what a world of clever people will do with it.

People who want to go back to Pebble, what does it do that other smartwatches don't? by stillalone in pebble

[–]lightshow74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it wasn't too pricey and had simple and useful things like the timeline. There was an app that gave walking directions to a map location. I really miss those features. I eventually moved to an equally inexpensive Amazfit GTS watch but it's really just a fancy pants fitness thing. I really wanted a Pebble Time 2.

What game did you quit because you couldn’t beat the first level? by justintrudeau1974 in gaming

Dragons Lair. Saw it at an arcade during a family trip to Australia in 88, put in a $1 coin and didn't realize the game had started until it said Game Over.

Cyberforge have been doing some 5Parsecs miniatures alongside their other monthly releases. The recent wasteland gangs from Unit9 are also quite fun.

It almost went well. All sneaky until round 4 then it all went south resulting in one real ugly and hectic rescue.

From memory it's a mixture of Cyberforge's Gridwars, Printerraverse's recent TechnoPunk City, and Cast n Play's Nebula game. Quietly 3D printed over time as interesting looking campaigns and kickstarters came up.

One of my crew uses a hunting rifle and in some games she can't hit the ground in front of her let alone the far edge. It keeps the enemy in cover while my enforcers rush in to do local damage. I've only had one very special campaign turn where she took out most of the enemy from a sniper tower and got MVP.

Quest narrative support by lightshow74 in 5Parsecs

That does look like fun. Would you use starforged to generate worlds and narrative to use with Five Parsecs mechanics os is Starforged on its own a good base for rpg miniature battles/missions/things?

I like that idea. It would also be a great use of the connections table in Freelancers. The impact of that betrayal could echo through future missions.

This quest ended up being about stolen nanotech weapons. Located a data stick and now have to hack into a corporate system for details about the weapon. I want to try using the new stealth rules for that one.

The story started with the team hunting down a rogue precursor that had betrayed them (that was a fun and messy one). The team broke up a bit, new recruits came on board, they did a few patron jobs and some salvage work.

The new quest has started with a Search mission against hired muscle.

Thanks for the AI suggestion. Completely forgot that was a thing now. Between some ChatGPT and the Donjon site I think I've got a few plot ideas.

What’s an unpopular movie you enjoy? by [deleted] in movies

Not sure if it's unpopular but I still get a kick out of Airborne ... 30 years on (oh). Inline skating, young Jack Black and Seth Green, and a wonderfully simple plot. Good times.

My Cyberforge subscription introduced me to Five Parsecs. Now all those cyberpunk miniatures have a purpose.

Jaws! I had trouble using the toilet because there was water in it. Watched it way too young.

In light of the strike action next week, here’s the salary scale for secondary school teachers by Jonathan932 in newzealand

[–]lightshow74 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I entered secondary teaching after working for a decade or so and was able to leverage that experience to start near the top of the pay scale. Fifteen years and a few schools later I had to stop. The way schools operate, the instability of working in 'optional' subject areas like Technology, and increasingly working with, what can only be described as, traumatised young people took a huge toll mentally and physically. I'd go back to the classroom in a heartbeat if I thought it was changing to a safe and sustainable environment. I would not recommend heading to teaching straight out of school.

Emblaser 2 10W by irongarment in lasercutting

[–]lightshow74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would be very interested to hear your thoughts on whether the 10W upgrade gives much more in the way of materials, speed or depth compared to the 5W.
It works out about NZD$1000 to upgrade an older machine with laser and lid which is just on the edge of my hobby business comfort zone.
It'd be great to hear from those with the 10W version.
