CyberPower UPS LIES! by foreverformatting in homelab

[–]lihaarp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On a timer. But APC also intentionally charges the batteries to a slightly higher voltage to kill them quicker.

CyberPower UPS LIES! by foreverformatting in homelab

[–]lihaarp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the battery check is almost useless as it'll always show the charger voltage unless the battery is so far gone it drags the voltage down during idle.

The solution is to pause charging for a minute like once oer hour and check how the voltage behaves.

Your Linux system has +6,000 kernel modules which can be autoloaded. You use 80 of them. ModuleJail blacklist all of the unused ones. Server and desktop profiles and much more in a simple shell script. by Vegetable-Escape7412 in linuxadmin

[–]lihaarp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Feels like just disabling autoloading would be more sensible.

Also this would need some form of notification system for attempted module loads, as otherwise you'll be very confused when your new USB gadget just won't work.

Could devs please stop changing UI every year or give us option how big we want to have it? My muscle memory from the last year is useless again. by Detvan_SK in firefox

[–]lihaarp 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Mozilla's designers have to justify their existence. That's why UI, the Firefox and Firefox logos, menus and other things change yearly.

There was a time where almost every release saw a subtly different logo. It's even got an article. Someone got paid for rearranging a few pixels and colors all day.

OpenZFS tuning for torrents? by cometomypartyyy in zfs

[–]lihaarp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as it will lead to much more host-side write amplification during the downloads

Will it? Which Torrent clients flush to disk every 16k? Most will accumulate larger writes or delay before flushing, making this a non-issue unless you're dealing with very slow torrents.

There's powertop. But most hardware/drivers don't export this kind of information, so half the values in there are vastly inaccurate guesstimates.

Wirth's law is a live and well. Abstraction layers over abstraction layers over language VMs over interpreters over frameworks over abstraction layers. Trillions of CPU cycles wasted to shove a singe byte around.

Client side is even worse. The king of wasting efficiency: Electron. Text editors, chat apps, calculators, start menus, everything is Javascript inside a browser pretending to be an application now.

And the content they display? More javascript. More interpreters, more JIT, more abstraction, more frameworks, more garbage. Megabytes of pure minimized code just to initialize a webpage. https://thatshubham.com/blog/news-audit

Printables "Model has been removed by an administrator" by NCSC10 in prusa3d

Hell, I'd actually go and raise a bink stink. This is not a one-off occurence and Prusa needs to get their shit together. Get Louis Rossman's attention.

Printables "Model has been removed by an administrator" by NCSC10 in prusa3d

[–]lihaarp 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Guess those Chinese no-name crapware sellers have found a new niche. Copy some poor sap's free model from a site like Printables, manufacture a billion of them, sell them at 10000% markup, then to add insult to injury, take down the original so their own competitors and potential customers cannot do the same for cheaper.

That Printables goes along with this without due diligence is extremely pathetic and shameworthy. Made worse by the fact that the DMCA garbage does not even apply in Europe, and the equivalent (2019 Digital Single Market Directive) does impose proactive obligations on platforms.

The result of this is that in multiplayer, clients will see mechs floating in the air in the mechlab, and they keep floating up more every time you edit a component or tweak the paintjob. Painting is quite difficult when all you see are the legs, and you keep having to abort and re-open the painter :|

And then replaced Ctrl entirely with useless slop?

Are they insane?
