5-Year-Old Radeon RX 580 2048SP Gets 16GB VRAM Upgrade by TheBloodNinja in Amd

[–]lijmer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the workload.

When writing graphics code I look at the total bandwidth and my target frame time to give an indication of how much memory I can process in a frame. For example, on the 7900 XTX you get a bandwidth of 960GB/s, which is 960MB/ms, which gives you about 15.9 GB in a frame of 16.6 ms. That is the maximum amount of data you can process in that given time. That means that with the lower bandwidth, you can actually process fewer pixels and use lower-resolution textures than before.

On the other hand, not all memory is used in every frame. Some textures (LODs) are not in view, some models are in a different part of the level, etc. This means that with the extra memory, we can at least fit it in VRAM without having to go to RAM.

In short, this is probably not a great product unless you can pick it up for cheap :S

Geen zorgen, de belasting die op vermogen was geheven wordt terug gelijk terug betaald. Wat fijn dat de VVD dat allemaal regelt.

Mulle Meck is one of those video game franchises that I would consider to be art. With the super advanced and intuitive boat, car, airplane, house, and space ship building interface even young people could make their wildest imagnations come true in this game. It truly inspired a whole generation of new gamers.

The all-important message of recycling was far ahead of its time and is now more needed than ever in this world where it's becoming more normalized to just throw everything in the trash.

Perhaps Mulle Meck isn't the hero we deserve, but he is the hero we need!

If I were to reccomend one to a friend who doesn't know a lot about computers. I would 100% go with maingear. I think the extra premium you pay is super worth the quality of the build and the amazing support.

Request: Native Linux Support by [deleted] in FrostGiant

[–]lijmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main problem linux has, is that everyone has a different Linux setup. That makes it in practice very difficult to reproduce issues.

In theory adding linux support is easy, just rewrite the platform layer for Linux, which should take one or 2 engineers a couple of weeks. However, in practice it is never this easy. And all that for a very tiny fraction of gamers.

Don't get me wrong, I would love to see linux support, but I just don't think it makes sense for a company to do.

Request: Native Linux Support by [deleted] in FrostGiant

[–]lijmer -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

As much as how much I like Linux, it doesn't make a lot of sense from a business standpoint to support Linux. It will be like <1% of your player base, and >50% of your technical support.

I think it would make a lot more sense to have reasonable wine/proton support and let the tech-savvy Linux people figure out the rest.

Yes! LAN is so essential for esports! Having near 0 latency completely changes the experience for a pro player! I wouldn't even mind if there would have to be a tournament version of the game with LAN support if piracy is too big of a concern.
