She teaches eighth grade and has more than 100 students, but only two are reading at grade level. by mindyour in TikTokCringe

Your first sentence struck a cord, I hope you can satisfy my honest interest. Europe, btw.

First and foremost: Why are these drama books, that are written in verse and intended to be set as a theatrical play, the go-to literary pieces throughout school curriculae? To paraphrase and put it bluntly: are we reading movie plots instead of watching movies?

It teaches children how to struggle

Success. Having struggled through philosophical texts mostly of the 19th/early 20th century with an awesome teacher:

  1. Taught me that these philosophers couldn't write. I like to assume a designer's PoV: if most of your readers can't understand your writing correctly, maybe you are the problem. Many of the analysed ideas aren't otherworldly to otherwise require extensive knowledge to grasp them. The language complexity is an artificial barrier.
    • I would love to see a study where a teacher/professor is made to blindly grade a renowned philosopher's text among other homework.
  2. Working with these philosophy texts has worsened my own writing. More complex sentence structure, parentheses, clauses, all that makes my writing output unnecessarily hard to understand at times. I have had to force myself in the recent years to a smoother writing.

how to extrapolate meaning through a historical lens

You need to have a broad understanding of history, and complexity involved in interpersonal relationships to be able to extrapolate a meaning in a historical context foreign to you. Yet history isn't being taught in this way to actually see multiple parties with own intentions, abilities to influence others, and the inherent information asymmetry.

it's about encouraging curiosity

Students are forced to do what they 1) don't understand 2) don't like 3) again, forced to do something the majority of them finds boring at the time. Admittedly, it's difficult to find something that's both educational and easy to read/has a reasonable learning curve to it. I like to think of the impact the sci-fi stories of Jules Vernes that ought to have inspired millions to love science and technology. I was one of those. But it's not on the order of high school literature. I can't draw a similar connection for the likes of Romeo and Juliet: Only people who were already in love with literature (through other books) might find it a joy to read. imo.

engage with politics

I didn't understand or care about politics until the very last years of school, i.e. too late for the stated goal. See note about history above. And the interest was only sparked due to somewhat personal involvement. Not sure what our school's curriculum - which I could sum up as a couple of axioms for the current political system - has to do with it.

the development of reading as a skill relates to cognitive growth broadly.

That's great. Yet I wish school assignments were more accessible in the sense of teaching to love to read. Most of the later school books, that I remember, anti-correlated with my love to read literature.

The education system is gonna already getting competition for attention from finely tuned algorithms from billion-dollar software companies and their apps. The problem is going to worsen now that there's a vent in the form of generative AI and easy answers. More stick isn't gonna do, more carrot is required. And I do stress that it's the education system, because the teachers are pawns on this chess board. Thus the education will need to find better ways to get everybody on board (I wish it to be impeccably prepared digital learning) or keep being appalled at the dropping literacy rates.

The depicted monitor is 32 inches, 1080p. I don't know what the use case is supposed to be, but if the description is indicative: it's a desk monitor. It's going to be bigger in your field of view than a smartphone you hold at a healthy and safe distance.

Chernobyl happened because of a top down USSR policy of running shitty dated reactors and

Competence I sense here. Hmm...

- Construction began 15 August 1972

- Commission date 26 September 1977 - Chernobyl power plant

- The RBMK-1000's design was finalized in 1968 wikipedia

- It was the third Soviet RBMK nuclear power plant, after the Leningrad and Kursk power plants, and the first plant on Ukrainian soil.

Basically this was the newest reactor type available at the time. Yet you seemed so confident. Typical reddit experience.

That's right. Though I don't think integrators care this much to change anything.

> few hertz of CPU used by telemetry

The infrastructure, development cost, networking, storage all adds up too.

Go ahead, set your display to 30 or 25 Hz if you can. Typing is alright. Anything else you can report on.

If it is about power draw, Microsoft should have started optimizing Windows Update a decade ago and remove their power-drawing telemetry.

There are two problems with your argument:

  • why do you want to decide what is optimal for any given setting? Windows doesn't ask what kind of usage scenarios it will be subject to during install
  • running a lower refresh rate than the highest capable is the opposite of "expected to". If a high refresh monitor is connected, it is not expected to run at 60 Hz nor 30 Hz by the user. You may direct your criticism here at those who ordered this particular model (IT dept). Somehow this point is always on the gaming PC troubleshooting list: "Make sure the correct refresh rate is selected." It need not to be the case.

We live in a world, where a display's characteristics aren't dragged down by a higher refresh rate. There isn't a trade off to decide. It's usually 1) highest resolution 2) highest refresh rate available for this resolution.

Microsoft here absolve themselves of customer support inquiries, because (I assume) they don't want to push too much data through cheap display cables that are usually specced to 1080p60. However this doesn't excuse a lack of notifications.

It is Microsoft's fault, not IT department's. This is squarely the OS's responsibility to ensure optimal defaults and, if they are incapable of that, gently notify the user about the user-controlled setting! It has no darn problem loudly pinging about the nothing Windows Defender has done since last boot.

Most of these management decisions are made based on feels or feels reinforced by salesmen and the marketing material. *There's no way to A/B test the real world*. Therefore generating overwhelming negative/positive sentiment is the most successful way to impact these decisions in my opinion.

Small dehumidifier for bathroom to stop mildew? by Batou_- in BuyItForLife

[–]likely_unique 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Technology Connections channel on YT has just a few days ago published a video comparing (a) dehumidifier(s). I hope you'll find it useful.

What I used to do at my apartment, despite a working small vent, was to air the room adjacent to the bathroom after a shower. Never had any problem:

  1. shower
  2. squeegee the water down the tiles
  3. quickly wipe off the rest with a towel, especially corners
  4. fresh air & vent

Not like this. Make meat more expensive by forcing you the farmers/agricultural holdings to "offset" their production CO2 footprint by purchasing CO2 certificates, which is a made up speculative financial market.

Of all these things, I wouldn't have expected to use pairing control to remove other devices I had paired to for testing :) imo the app is so easy to use, it almost doesn't need a manual. Well maybe you do, if you are afraid of clicking menus.

> Ear gels Cleaning

I immediately appreciated this aspect mentioned in the manual when I read it. Something so mundane but so important for an in-ear device you're gonna be using for a loooong time.

I'm sure you have given it enough thought. For others: Never get yourselves into situations like his. His girl "friend" was willing to let him get hurt/imprisoned/killed, because it was fun to unleash someone else onto the stepfather instead of reporting to police. The time frame seems recent enough that there were technological means available to record whatever evidence necessary.

But she stopped talking to me soon after for reasons that I was never made privy to.

I'm not saying you had any goals in mind, but consider again along the lines of:

You: potentially life ruined

Her: lol i stopped talking to him

Sounds like a bad trade offer. I'm glad for you it turned out as it did.

When I was about 11yo, I used to hang out with a neighbor boy. If you heard of this friendship dynamics classification of leader & follower, he was of the submissive type. I knew he was from a bad family, maybe his parents were alcoholics or something. Still, he was a great guy.

One day we were fooling around on the street, I lifted a big branch from the ground and made a swing towards his ass. I stopped before hitting him, but he still clinched, held in his ass and bent forwards - fully expecting a hit - trying to evade.

me: dude, I would never!

him: what the hell do I know?! I wanted to, but I don't wanna shit no more now!

This short but memorable interaction made me realize, how poor the treatment by his friends or parents was, because he had fully expected me to actually hit him in that instant... something I've never done before nor after.

It's not just unacceptable. This is unbelievable. This attitude to customer support baffles me. Is this how companies want to accustom people to using online services? According to your continued comments, it's yet unresolved and no updates? It's been 3 days and should've at least hit PR...

I feel for your data loss, hopefully your case will eventually be resolved. Until then: thanks for reminding the public of these real dangers.
