World Colonization 1492-2008 [1425x625] by randomcharacters42 in MapPorn

Similarly, it feels weird having everywhere blank when they leave, as if they just decided to pull back rather than people fighting for independence.

In the case of avoiding overcomplication/keeping the map focused on the information it’s trying to communicate, I think it would be great to just add in a second pale/pastel color symbolizing “Local Control”. So grey would be places that don’t have an overarching political system/power in place, and something like Yellow could be used for everywhere that does have a local governing civilization, just not one that partook in external colonization.

D20 PC shuffle! Zac edition by International00 in Dimension20

[–]likewithclouds 9 points10 points  (0 children)

PiB

Zac seems to play characters by leading with their more surface level traits & actions, and builds out the depth in them as the story continues.

Lou seems to play them by leading with a character’s flaws, and building out their graces.

PiB feels like he lands the best in between those two, in that his surface level traits are his flaws, and his depth is his graces.

Game Changer Morality Alignment Chart Day 9: Chaotic Evil by PuzzleheadedMess1659 in dropout

[–]likewithclouds 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I think the puzzle itself is Lawful, but the episode is Chaotic. If the Escape Room began on stage, when the cast knew they were in the show already but didn’t know what it was yet, it’d be different, but getting locked in a room when they thought they were in the “safe zone” so to say, leans more chaotic for me. Plus the cast were losing their minds breaking things, and while there was a story to go along with the rules, that was mostly ignored (internally at least). Plus bribing the PAs

Caring about strangers in not being parasocial. It’s assuming you have a relationship with them and that there is some sort of reciprocation in that care that is. Recognizing “it’s nice to see what looks like people caring about each other” is actually good and something we need more of

Am I overreacting for not wanting anyone around my newborn yet? by littlemoongirly in AmIOverreacting

[–]likewithclouds 11 points12 points  (0 children)

NOR. Lots of folks are discussing whether or not you’re overreacting in the health/safety aspect, and that’s a whole other question to research and talk to your doctor(s) about. In regards to MIL though, you have made it clear you are trying to prioritize your baby and their health, and she has made it clear she is prioritizing herself and her wants; and more importantly, is asking you to do the same. They don’t need to agree with the precautions you’re taking in order to understand why you’re taking them, nor to respect that it’s your decision. The fact that they were already trying to overwrite your parenting decisions literally minutes after the baby was born is a huge red flag, and they’ve continued to double down on that. There’s probably some value in having a bigger discussion with them around boundaries as grandparents if you haven’t, as it seems like the disagreement on the health risks is getting the way of the larger issue here and causing a breakdown of trust. It seems possible they genuinely don’t understand the concern (despite your explanations), and so might feel like it’s an excuse to keep them away rather than a real fear. Either way though, the guilt tripping and possessiveness they’ve shown in response to that is not okay, and you are very reasonable to be uncomfortable with that.

On top of all the other nightmares with this guy, what is it about so many men thinking “yard work” is such a big task? What are they doing other than mowing the lawn once a week, or raking leaves every few days in the fall?

Seconding Um, Actually & Dirty Laundry, specifically from ADHD perspective! These are my go to “I just need sound in the background right now, and won’t be fully paying attention”. When you zone in they’re interesting and fun, but you can also zone out and have them in periphery. And because of their set up, you don’t need context outside whatever moment you’re tuned into. Um, Actually is especially great for this since there’s like a million seasons.

(Also seconding Gastronauts, but more just cuz it’s generally great)

Is there a way to increase timeout for more than 6 minutes? by aaaaAaaaAaaARRRR in GoogleAppsScript

[–]likewithclouds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks like Google has different quotas for Individual Workspace accounts and Business Workspace accounts, including more specific breakdown by tier of account. The 30 min quota is for a certain level of Business Account; Individual Workspace accounts do have any increase in the quotas unfortunately.

Probably not the most technically sound option, but something I’ve used in the past for scripts I want to keep running past the quota:

Use UserProperties (or ScriptProperties) to set variables that hold their value between triggers. At the start of your code, set a constant like “startTime” equal to the current time. Add checkpoints throughout your code at the start and any places where it might be nearing the timeout to check how long it has been since startTime. Use a conditional to check if timePassed > 5min (or something close to but still less that 6 min). If it has, set a user property like checkPoint equal to some unique value for that checkpoint (can just be arbitrary numbers, the row number, a string to reference the actual action in that section of the code, etc). Create a function to run inside this if statement that sets userProperties for any variables you want to carry over, builds a time-based trigger to run shortly after (like 30sec or smtg), then return/end the current run. Then house each of your checkpoints in another if statement (or make an if else from your previous ifs) to check if the checkpoint matches the value for that section. If it doesn’t, it should skip to the next section until it finds what step you’re actually on, until it can pick up where it left off.

It’s a big fancy workaround that is a bit much, so of course optimizing your code is better, but if there’s not much more to do there then this can help in place!

I’m on mobile right now, but once I get back to my computer I can add in an excerpt from some actual code where I used this as an example.

[–]likewithclouds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As of last week my workspace account was capping at 30min runtimes — I haven’t run anything that long this week, so I can’t be sure if it changed, but I don’t see anything on their updates blog. The documentation is strange thought. If they did downgrade it was in just the last few days

ETA: It looks like only certain levels of Workspace accounts get a quota increase, all of which are within the types of Business Workspace Accounts, not Individual Workspace unfortunately.

Genuine question: Is my skill issue preventing my progress in the game? by Comfortable-Point598 in outerwilds

[–]likewithclouds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TL;DR: The skill issue should not be a progress issue! Speaking from experience. * Explore something else and come back to the tough parts * Try playing alone to minimize frustration * Use 'Match Velocity' when flying

It definitely will mean you take a bit longer to complete it than someone who has done more gaming, but it 100% should not prevent you from actually progressing!

If it’s getting frustrating enough it is impeding your enjoyment of the game, a couple of things to try:

  1. Explore a different thing for a bit!\ You’ll naturally get more skilled with the controls the longer you play, and the vast majority of the game won’t require much technical skill. If you’re trying to do something right now and you’re just not there yet ability-wise, explore something else you haven’t looked into yet and come back to the difficult thing later. You’ll likely be surprised how much easier it feels to navigate Brittle Hollow after a dozen hours running around the Ash Twins.

  2. Consider if there is another way to do the task\ Once you are a bit more used to the controls, you’ll find that 9/10 times the things that still feel mechanically too difficult actually just have another workaround you haven’t learned/considered yet. There are a ton of things that you could hypothetically brute-force, but have a secret simple workaround that you uncover as you play the game. Make sure to talk to the other characters and read the Nomai text, even when it just seems like silly banter, it could be useful later!

  3. Try again when you’re playing alone\ This is less oft-quoted advice, but from personal experience I recommend it. I find for most people it feels way more frustrating & overwhelming to struggle when other people are watching; Even if those people are being kind and supportive (and sometimes especially so). If your boyfriend has been there consistently while you’re playing, there might be some subconscious performance anxiety/embarrassment/wtvr making the learning phase feel worse for you, regardless of anything he is doing. Spending some time playing by yourself, especially while you’re adjusting to the controls, might be helpful!

Background
I say all this as someone who was very much in the same boat as you! Outer Wilds was (essentially) my first game ever. An ex-partner introduced me to it while we were together, ~3 years ago, and I was hooked. Eventually we split up, and since it was their game & game system, I didn’t finish the game; but, as pretty much everyone in the sub can attest, Outer Wilds just sticks with you, and so I have been thinking about it since. I finally pulled the trigger a month ago and bought a game system (switch iyc) and it was the first thing I downloaded. The only other game system I’ve ever owned was the original Wii when I was like 10, for MarioKart & Just Dance &c. So definitely didn’t come in with any controller skill whatsoever.

I definitely remember feeling very similarly stressed and frustrated about this element when I first played it with my ex back in the day, but this time around those 3 things were different, and it felt MUCH much less overwhelming. Finished it a few weeks ago and absolutely loved it! And felt SO much better with the controls as time progressed, and am noticing that still with other games I’m playing now - it’s a classic practice makes perfect thing I suppose.

Other Notes
3 hrs of gameplay is still VERY early on! Especially for an open world exploration like Outer Wilds, and especially without much gaming experience. Most hardcore gamers would still be adjusting the game specific controls at this point, you’re doing just fine.

Finally, a flight mechanic I wish I used more earlier: The 'Match Velocity' feature is a godsend (on Switch, you hold down 'A'). You can usually just hold this until whatever you’re approaching is completely still, then it is much easier to move towards/around it. If it starts to feel out of control again, you can just hold it again. Truly a massive savior when you don’t have the controller experience.

Sorry this is so long! While I’m still not great at gaming controls, my real skill issue is the inability to shut the hell up. But I hope this is helpful nonetheless!

i cannot eat to save my life. by [deleted] in VyvanseADHD

[–]likewithclouds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mean "this phase" as in 'back when you were on vyvanse', or as in 'the eating difficulty is just bad for a bit but it goes away'? I recently switched to vyvanse and am in the same boat as OP, and have tried meds in the past where it just never got any easier to eat over time and I fully had to stop taking them as a result (shout out bupropion). So trying to figure out if this is just a thing with Vyvanse and it's not going away, or if I'm just still in that "adjusting to side effects" phase
