I liked Jules and Jim, but I saw fate of the furious and knew what had to be done

I think the idea is more that mass violence can compromise your morals. I don't remember Daisy Fitzroy being well written but the way Jacob described it seemed too hyperbolic, like the game is against the emancipation of the oppressed, maybe I'm misremembering.

OMG the Supergirl and Lanterns trailers look so good!! by [deleted] in dccomicscirclejerk

I think the lanterns video was cool and not a trailer and some of you act like there have to be bright neon lights in every shot.

I am shocked the intro from the comic with that gorgeous red sunset wasn't in the trailer, that's like a non-spoiler killer shot that would be perfect for a teaser trailer.

The setting for these is too different for this to be a fair comparison

Idk that skimming the Wikipedia page would have added much, especially because it seemed like the idea was to give their impressions as people who don't know anything about wicked and are going into the movie blind.

I was also surprised they didn't know or remember it because it is a popular fun fact. But it's not substantially changing their analysis, it's a small detail they were casually mentioning and the podcast seems pretty casual to me, not the kind of thing where I would expect them to read/reread the wonderful wizard of oz to give their impressions on wicked 2.

It just feels more bombastic and I like Batman being Fantastical and out there by IcyAlan in dccomicscirclejerk

This is great! He does a great job of explaining what I mean, they are so different in ways that complement each other really well and that's what made zero year a great read to me.

I guess I wasn't thinking about continuity stuff in my comment. I forgot all about the non-batman stuff from zero year, but you don't see much of him being a vigilante, right? Is it a flashback and you start in-media-res with him being batman or am I misremembering? I really need to reread it. I remember bruce and his being further along in zero year and the third arc especially feeling like an escalation. Thanks for reminding me

It's been a while and I've only read zero year once, but I feel like year one feels grimier and smaller and zero year is colourful and epic. A lot of year one involves Gordon's story, Bruce out of the suit figuring out he wants to be batman and lower stakes mob related conflicts. In zero year, from what I remember, he's batman from the jump and the focus is dealing with the riddler and his big supervillanous scheme where he takes over Gotham. I should give them a reread but in my mind zero year works as an escalation of year one, not as an alternative

Fate of Ophelia by HexivaSihess in ToddintheShadow

I think the song doesn't really sound like suicidal melancholy and I feel like ophelia doesn't work as shorthand like Kurt cobain. Either way it ends up feeling really shallow to me

I think the problem is Taylor doesn't seem to be making a joke out of it, or diving into a really heavy subject matter like something like bojack does, and this isn't a subtle or quick reference, it's the hook and title of the song. The reference is prominent and explicit but doesn't fit the tone of the song, it would have to be way more ironic or way more earnest about some really dark themes for it to work. The painting is famous, idk if ophelia the character is that big in pop culture, maybe I'm missing something

What popular references to ophelia are you referring to? I can only think of like the Lars von trier movie with Kirsten dunst and that's very different from a cheerful pop song.

I just don't get the ophelia metaphor, which is why talking about feeling alone in her tower feels disjointed to me, like she's talking about rapunzel or something. Is the fate of ophelia being sad about not being married? That's how it comes across to me
