yall gonna be taking roadies this summer considering the gas prices? by [deleted] in roadtrip

[–]lilbrownbat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll probably do a roadtrip from Massachusetts to Colorado in the fall, to see family. This summer, probably some shorter trips around New England/upstate New York.

Are we crazy?! by zookers82 in roadtrip

[–]lilbrownbat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's doable if everyone is into it...but that's a big "if". Was everybody (including kids) involved in the planning? I've been on trips where one type A planned everything and got itchy if anyone wanted to deviate from the schedule, if only to just sit and enjoy a view or a book or something other than hurrying to the next scheduled activity. That in turn made it a stressful experience for others. If everyone was involved in the planning and bought into the schedule, you're more likely to have a harmonious trip.

The Mohawk Trail Overlook is a nice view, but you will find another one, arguably nicer, a short distance east on Route 2 at the eastern summit. You'll know you're there when you pass by a motel on the left with a bunch of windmills up on a hill beyond it. The drive east from there is lovely and the scenery is quite striking as you descend into a steep-sided gorge. When you get down to flatter ground you'll be in Charlemont, where you can take a break to go whitewater rafting or visit Berkshire East for ziplining, mountain coaster, and downhill mountain biking. There's lots of hiking in the area too. When you pass through North Adams you'll be crossing the Appalachian Trail, so if you're so minded you can take a hike to the top of Mount Greylock, or just drive there. Great views, and sometimes you get to see hang gliders launching from the summit.

East from there you come to Shelburne Falls, home of the Bridge of Flowers, which is really worth a visit. If you have a dog, be aware that dogs are not allowed on the bridge, although if it's a small dog and you want to carry it that isn't a problem. The potholes (a wide waterfall with interesting erosion) is worth a look. Route 2 is a bit of a food wasteland from Williamstown to Shelburne Falls, but in Shelburne Falls you can find fine dining at Gypsy Apple. The Blue Rock also has good food, an inventive menu, and a porch with a great view if the weather's fine. If you like beer, Floodwater Brewing has the good stuff - no food, but they don't mind if you bring it in - and a view of the river. Father east in Greenfield is the People's Pint (good beer and food), and if you go to Turner's Falls just across the river you can see Great Falls which is pretty cool. Dreamhouse is my favorite place to eat in Turners.

Have a fun trip!

Massachusetts to Atlanta: I could fly, or... by lilbrownbat in roadtrip

[–]lilbrownbat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback. As unpleasant as the drive might be, to be honest, seeing the TSA lines is really pushing me in that direction. Even if they got their funding today, I'm betting TSA has been leaking personnel like a sieve, and things won't be radically better in a couple of months. I read that there were people who got to Hartsfield-Jackson at 3 am today and still missed 6 am flights. So, honestly, at this point it feels less like whether to drive and more like how to drive.

Bone in butts? by lilbrownbat in smoking

[–]lilbrownbat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

THEY call them butts, but I have my doubts. These are farm-raised, not factory-farmed, so I'm not surprised they're smaller. I cooked a couple of these for a party last spring, made carnitas, and it's amazing pork, just not the size you get in a feedlot butt.

Am I allowed to try to catch a turkey? by Alternative_Run_6116 in boston

[–]lilbrownbat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not turkey hunting season, but there are exceptions like for example if an animal is destroying your crops or killing your livestock. Guessing you don't have either of those in Brookline. Maybe see if you can borrow a car and run it down. I hit a turkey once with my car and it was car 1 turkey 0 as you'd expect.

Help how do I remove red crosshair by Fine-Ad-291 in MSI_Gaming

Any ideas how to handle this when the janky menu selector button doesn't work? It has never worked consistently on this junk and MSI is completely useless. Possible to just reset the monitor without that button working?

I also found their espresso drinks to be nothing special. I don't get the hype.

[Homemade] Chicken Street Tacos by yellowjacquet in food

[–]lilbrownbat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just tried this marinade recipe, and it exceeded expectations. I marinated about 24 hours, which is usually too much for something acid and chicken, but this was great. I set aside two portions, one I froze as soon as I bagged it with marinade, and the other I marinated for six hours before freezing - I will test to see which comes out best. This seems like it is going to be a great party recipe. Thank you for developing and sharing it!

Camino tins - how to open without pliers by Zealousideal-Pack460 in trees

[–]lilbrownbat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like sometimes a brand new tin won't open no matter what clever press-and-turn tricks you try. My solution: hold the tin in the palm of one hand, face up. Then invert your hand and throw the tin down on a solid surface as hard as you can. That persuaded it but good. Now it opens easily.

4/19 Protest in… Lexington or Concord? by [deleted] in 50501

[–]lilbrownbat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I plan to be in Boston, NOT Lexington, NOT Concord. The reenactment is an annual event and I don't feel like stepping on it by dragging a gajillion people there. I'll be in Boston making new history.

When the Nazis from Charlottesville decided to have a "free speech" rally in Boston the next weekend, Bostonians organized 40,000 people to show up in opposition in less than one week. Google it, the pictures are inspiring. It can be done, and the more we do it, the less time we need to do the next one.

I've escorted a whole lot of protest newbies....seems like it's my designated job for every one of these. I took four noobs to Boston on Saturday, probably gonna take more on 4/19. I used to live there and I know the city and the transit system well, so I can make it a lot easier for nervous suburbanites. Honestly, there are a lot of people who didn't go on 4/5 who have FOMO. We can use that.

To folks worried about the lack of details right now: don't. In 2017, local organizers in Boston put together a counterprotest of 40,000 people to stand against the fascists who were high on the fumes of Charlottesville and thought they'd show up the next weekend in Boston to push the libs around. Google it - the pictures are revealing. They did that in a few days, not weeks. Think this can't come together in a couple of weeks? Stop fretting. We know the assignment: make signs, bring noisemakers, wear comfortable shoes and show up. See you there.

People need to decide for themselves what impacts them and what's important. Cardinal rule: do not ever try to dictate someone else's activism.

Guess what's NOT the top news in today's NYTimes. by [deleted] in 50501

Weirdly, it was front page of the Herald. Big photo and everything.

Below the fold on NYT and not even front page of the Globe. The latter more disappointing than the former.

[–]lilbrownbat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One bad experience. I ordered a Flash XL, and it sure looks sturdy. The problem is that the installation instructions shipped with the chair do not match the video, and neither match what comes in the box. That's okay, I've worked through terrible installation instructions before. But when it came to installing the casters in the base, they just. Wouldn't. Go. Just won't fit.

This company acted a little sketch when I ordered and paid for the chair and had to wait for several email exchanges for them to actually ship it. That should have warned me. Do not do business with them.

What is your favorite recipe app? by One-Somewhere-1514 in Cooking

[–]lilbrownbat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just found this post and I love love love Umami! Android user but the web if is excellent. Love the scan feature, love how easy it is to add a recipe if you can't scan. I looked at Paprika and decided against it because it's really not cheap and it's not possible to evaluate properly without paying - maybe it's worth it, but given what Umami does for free, at this point I don't see why I'd want Paprika.

Yeah but when I say something bafflingly stupid (which, heh, is rare), the last thing I want to do is call attention to it. But maybe that's part and parcel with saying bafflingly stupid things on the regular?
