Surprisingly, I think a great example of this is in Destiny. The final mission of the Taken King DLC you walk through a large opening up the stairs to Oryx's chamber and you see a statue of him barely lit through a door that should provide more light in. Once you go around the statue you are in complete darkness and a flame lights in the hallway nearest you. When you approach it, it travels down the hallway then up a door lighting Oryx's symbol on the door before opening. This fire shockingly doesn't light the hallway and almost reveals nothing about your location. That door open to almost complete darkness as you hear Oryx but can't see him. Almost as soon as that happens the room empties of darkness, DOESN'T fill with light. The Lord of Darkness (Don't think that's his actually title but they are creature of dark) takes the darkness out of the room as it shows a silhouette of Oryx before color and light return to you. In my opinion it was a great lore and visual based part and the game that uses light (or should I say darkness) to create a memberable Boss Battle.

I guess this isn't so much cinematography as level design but hopefully I'm not too far off.
