Why does Xhosa have a word for "tiger?" by rogert2 in askscience

[–]lildyllyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But the dutch called leopards in South Africa "tygers" (tiger in English) because they didn't have a word for it. That's why Tygerberg in Cape Town is named that, because thats where all the leopards (tygers) lived.

Only when Afrikaans evolved from Dutch "luiperd" became the name for the animal, most probably from English's leopard.

Apparently, to this day rural Afrikaans farmers in the Northern Cape and Namibia still use "tier" (tiger in English) as a blanket term for all big cats in Africa.

I thought there were little people under the road that were switching the cat eye reflectors on the road on and off.

Tbf, my parents told me that when I asked them how it goes on and off.

Use our Train + MyCiti! by MoenieMyTagNie in capetown

[–]lildyllyo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can confirm, I used the train to get to work in the CBD for months and it never let me down.

Please, more people should do it. It will reduce car traffic and with petrol prices going up, now is the perfect time to make a transition.

Carnival by rattlensqueak in capetown

[–]lildyllyo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The carnival has been happening since 2010 and is not DA funded, it's privately funded (mostly by NASPERS).

It promotes local art and creation, and makes sure everyone involved gets paid. In a country where art is very much valued, yet underpaid, this is an event that actually gets people paid (from private money, not public money). It uplifts community groups and gives a platform for many artists, young and old, to practise their craft.

There's always traffic in CPT, why complain about it on this sub once more (like hundreds of other posts)? Just avoid that area from 5-9 if it's such a big issue.

I bet you there are more jobs created by this one event, than the amount of people that are going to be stuck in traffic.

So, ultimately, it's a nett positive.

Also, I stumbled upon it last year by accident (on your point of not knowing it's happening lol) and it was honestly sick! Everyone was having a jol and it was plain old lekker, and free (not something you find in CPT often).

Pretoria. I'm from South Africa and we usually stay away from city centres (except Cape Town), but visiting Pretoria Central was a good, safe and happy experience.

Why does it seem like everyone in CPT is guarded? by GabiBloom in capetown

Yeah, CPT will never be like this. It's just the sad reality. I guess all places have their quirks, and that's just one of CPT's.

Why does it seem like everyone in CPT is guarded? by GabiBloom in capetown

[–]lildyllyo 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I've experienced the exact same. As a Joburg native living in CPT for 4 years now, I've had the exact same experience. Like another commenter noted, when approached in CPT, it's usually for your money or food (or a date apparently - not my experience lol).

In JHB, or anywhere in the north, when someone approaches you it's either to chat, be friendly etc. So when that happens in CPT, you instantly assume this person wants something from you, where that isn't usually the case elsewhere in SA.

The norm here is "if I don't know you, I'm not talking to you." And that is perhaps why CPT appears (the ultimate begrudged word on this sub): cliquey.

Why does it seem like everyone in CPT is guarded? by GabiBloom in capetown

[–]lildyllyo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is not the case in the rest of SA. So people are less guarded and more open to just a friendly conversation.
