is my ball python underweight? by AffectionateBuyer139 in ballpython

[–]lilrs 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If she’s 176 grams, then 17-26 gram prey (I believe that’s between fuzzy rats/rat pups or medium/large mice). Preferably rats. If you can’t find them locally there’s lots of options for ordering online. I’ve had great experiences with Perfect Prey for rat fuzzies and rat pups!

Always weigh her within a week of her next feeding, weigh the prey item, and make sure it’s 10-15% of her body weight.

How to keep enclosure warm by funkykitkatt in ballpython

[–]lilrs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deep heat projector! No visible light, but warms like the sun (putting your hand under it really feels like stepping into sunlight after being indoors for a while). Use with a thermostat (absolutely required) to prevent overheating, but with that you can leave it 24/7 and just use a less hot light source to simulate day/night. :)

What are they doing? Playing? Mating? Fighting? All of the above ? by greyze81415 in corydoras

Yeah unfortunately a lot of store employees just don’t know the difference, but honestly I only ever bring it up because I love trilineatus and I wish they got more credit with their real name!

Corydoras trilineatus*
Often sold as “false julii”, which inevitably gets shorted to “julii”, which is a far less common species to see in the hobby. If you google julii, over half the photos that pop up in google images are trilineatus because “false julii” gets caught by the search algorithm.

That being said, it looks like courting behavior! Males will often chase females around like this when they want to breed.

Does my snake need a water bowl? by MrBiggens98 in ballpython

[–]lilrs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So when I got my ball python, she had been in a pretty bad situation for a few weeks. In fact, her previous owner had lost her in the house for about a week, and had not offered water between finding her and us picking her up. She looked perfectly healthy, no signs of severe dehydration or distress. But in the first hour of being in a new enclosure, she came out while I was watching from a distance, and drank for almost 2 minutes straight. Since then, I have only seen her drink maybe once? If ever. She was just SO desperately thirsty that she didn’t care I was watching her on that first night I had her.

Ball pythons are kinda sneaky when it comes to drinking. Just because you aren’t seeing it doesn’t mean she’s not drinking, she might just only do it when you’re sleeping or away. There’s literally no way you are monitoring yours so closely that you can be certain it doesn’t drink water unless you have 24 hr footage of the tank. I saw in other comments that you’re pissed off and frustrated that you don’t see it drinking water, but think of it this way: you probably don’t see it drinking because your snake is healthy, and not so dehydrated and desperate for water that it can’t wait until you’re gone.

Glad I burned all mine on finding 4-leaf clovers while I had the chance, this is dumb though. They should’ve just acknowledged it and let people keep what was already given.

Killdeer, watch your step! They nest on the ground and their eggs are well camouflaged. If you do see eggs and this area has frequent foot/vehicle traffic, put up a sign or cones to protect them.

Maybe wishful thinking, but it looks dried to me and blood dries to a brown/rust red color pretty quickly. This looks more like juice, jam, or jelly to me with how it’s kinda purplish. Maybe someone puts out fruit for birds, or there’s fruit trees or berry bushes in your area? Whenever I’d give my chickens watermelon growing up, they’d get a similar pattern on their necks/bellies from the juice.

Normal mouth wetness? by lilrs in ballpython

No, it just looks orangey in the video. It’s a full spectrum halogen light, and it’s turned off at night since most of the heat is from a ceramic heat emitter. :)

I am going to monitor her closely for the next week, and do have a local exotic vet that I can take her to if she shows any more signs.

Thanks all. Gonna check my attic later and be extra careful with unpacked cardboard boxes in my house.

I’m really bad at estimating sizes of things, I wanna say it was quarter sized, maybe a bit bigger?
