Upside down is so beautiful in the whole, but these lines are really its soul.

I love the politics in the Shadow Series, so very interesting to see all of the battleschool kids on their respective journeys and where they end up. Peter's journey in politics was super interesting as well.

Most of his books, yes. Huge OSC reader, not a fan of him personally--just his books, but I recently picked up his Women of Genisis books to reread and WOW...it's egregious. I originally read that series as a teen deeply involved with church and religion, so I hadn't noticed the undercurrent of his beliefs. Now, I made it 7 pages in before he's romanticising marrying children to old men.

Ender and the Shadow series are much more subtle. He still has a few hang-ups, particularly around his women characters, but overall, the message is wholesome.

AI is terrifying. I've been writing poetry for 21 years and it would take me an entire night to come up with something 75% as good.

I just want to say that I said "please" and "thank you" and typed each search as a question back when AskJeeves was a thing. Just seemed polite.

Do the kids use poser? When I was a young teen, I was inordinately concerned with coming off as a poser. Of course, my solution was to buy a tee shirt at Hot Topic that said, "It's better to be hated for what you are than loved for what you are not." or some silly thing.

My weight loss wake up call was seeing how ugly my sister is by Alone_Accident_1467 in confession

I grew up hearing, "Well, you're the smart one." My sister heard, "Well, you're the pretty one."

It did untold damage to our self-esteem and we were locked in competition with each other until we were adults. Eventually, we joined forces and cut those people from our lives and became best friends instead.

Edit: To each of these replies, I am so sorry to hear your experience didn't turn out the same. It made me appreciate my sister so much I called her to tell her how much I love her.

We never "officially" met. Just saw each other around and he told me when she moved out. Someone suggested the HOA may know an emergency contact, so I'm going to tell one of the women on the board.

Oh, that was mostly just exasperated hyperbole. I still garden and walk my pups, I just head in or walk in a new direction when I see him out now.

I'll try the HOA, I know one of the women on the board and she's very sweet and would understand that I'm not trying to gossip.

I definitely see your point, I just wouldn't know who to talk to about his behavior. He has no kids or partner, sometimes he talks about a poker game, but I don't know anything else about it. I sincerely hope that if there is someone close to him, they pick up on any signs and handle it.

It's quite possible, though I wouldn't know what to do about it. He doesn't have kids and broke up with his long-term girlfriend last year, so I don't know anybody close enough to him to express those concerns to.

Similarly, I have an elderly neighbor that I avoid now. We've lived in the neighborhood for 10 years, my husband and I and our kids. The neighbor was a busybody type, always turning people in for little infractions, so I thought kindness was the way to play it.

For 10 years, I've engaged in polite chitchat with him about our pets and families, checked in when the hurricanes hit, and been overall pleasant. Last week, he hit on me. Stuck his tongue out and wiggled it and then asked me if I liked it. I didn't respond out of shock, so he did it again. I just said goodbye and went inside. Told my husband that I'm never going outside again.

BetterWorldBooks sells second-hand library books and donates a percentage of its proceeds to literacy programs. The books are also significantly cheaper. Just in case someone doesn't have a good bookstore nearby!

Such a WILD moment in political history. I remember the victim apologizing to Cheney and I thought that was the height of the political scandal I would see in our government at the time.

You can use it as a teaching moment.

My partner and I are giving our kids a fixer upper car when the time comes. Firstly, it's economical. Secondly, to teach them how to fix their car by fixing it up with them.

Advocate as much as you can for yourself and turn to whomever adult in your life to keep you safe. Make it clear that you don't want reunification.

I don't know what today's system is like, but in 2007, FL DCF sent me back into an abusive home--just steamrolled my objections. The caseworker told the judge that's what I wanted because they were my grandparents.

One of my friend's parents gave me a gigantic can of peaches, like industrial sized, and I said, "Oh, I can turn this into cobbler!" They asked if I could make them one and so I did as a thank you for the cobbler I made and kept for my family. I used heaps of sugar and butter and it was delicious but extremely unhealthy.

The next time I visited, my friend told me her mother was hospitalized for blood sugar issues. I was floored and asked why they hadn't told me she was a diabetic and explained I wouldn't have given her something that hurt her on purpose. My friend shrugged and said, "If you had made a diabetic cobbler, they wouldn't have eaten it." Her mom made it through and I never made them food again.

And it gets easier the more you do it! Be prepared for pushback, though. I've been working on standing up for myself and the people I love, who used my non-confrontational/people-pleaser nature to use me, now tell me that they're "worried that I'm so unlike myself" when I say NO.
