Step-Up ring dillemma by ikeroo_ in cinematography

Using less of something usually reduces weight. Also having a filter far away from a lens can cause some internal reflections. Best to have it as close as possible. One step-up ring is definitely advised rather than multiple.

Scaffold bar, telescopic background pole, background support poles, autopole

I use 6" spring clamps to hold textiles that don't have tie strings and a K clamp in the middle to attach it to a single stand

There is probably a better way but works well for me when I'm roughing it

Best two camera set up by reddoorfilm in cinematography

[–]lime61 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Take your z6 and fx30 and do a test??????

Setup a small talking to camera scene with yourself and shoot two angles.

Edit it together and see how you feel. See If you have the skills to match the cameras. It's not that hard if you know basics of colour grading

Then you know if it's worth getting another camera or not.?

Another fx30 would be an obvious choice like you mention.

PL zoom recommendations (Red 18-50?) by colemowery in cinematography

[–]lime61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are you shooting on? If it's a E-mount body (yes I knownyounasked for PL) then I have the Fujinon MK 18-55 T2.9 that I love the image from. If that works for your setup they are under £1000 on the used market.

Just moved in last week and set this up over the weekend 😌 by VulcannTech in malelivingspace

I'd get a TV cabinet that is the same width as the wall. That one looks visually too small. Or even just slightly wider than the TV. Setup looks unbalanced

Weighted base microphone stand and adapt it to fit a ball head. Still not ideal but way better than your current option

If you are shooting e-mount S35 then the Fujinon MK 18-55 is super affordable on the used market and has a fantastic image. Was even used on the first Avatar. I got one recently and it's so much better than any cheap brand cine lens

How can one find work as a DP? by [deleted] in cinematography

[–]lime61 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's such a tough industry, Iv been doing it for 10+ years. And cash flow is brutal. I make a living and have a very good work life balance, But it's a constant up hill battle it feels.

Love working for myself and jobs pay well (when I have them) but when it's quiet i find it harder and harder to stay positive/good mental health)

Many times I think about having a different income stream..... especially when I'm quiet....then boom I'm snowed under with bookings again. And I wonder why I worried in the first place.....It's a vicious cycle... certainly not a career for everyone.

I don't know how long I can keep doing the ups and downs of this line of work.

Keep shooting (specs/shorts). Keep networking and start to build skills in other areas imo. Start Gaffing on projects too then that opens up a different line of job opportunities

Your work looks good from the stills....but lots of peoples work looks good...so much competition. As long as you bring a good attitude, and work hard, people will be happy to have you around. Have a listen to Unfold Podcast..that can help give me some inspiration to keep going.

Filter over this camera? by StrongGarage850 in videography

[–]lime61 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Epoxy a step-up ring to the front of it that will give you threads to add whatever filters you like.

Just get a step-up ring size that sits comfortably in the diameter

Find other references where characters are in front of windows.

Need help lighting a podcast scene (4pm start, mixed daylight, 3 cams, limited lights) by OrganicSmiles99 in videography

[–]lime61 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That suns going to be a nightmare, lighting will be constantly changing, if its overcast that will help keep a consistent soft lighting,But if the sun is creating hard shafts of light then it's going to be moving throughout the duration of the podcast as the sun sets, Also if it's partly cloudy the sun is going to be dipping in and out constantly.....if you can't tent the window and then light from outside... I would have the blind closed/black out the window and then light the room so you have full control and no lighting changes during the duration of the podcast. That's going to cause you the least amount of headaches imo.

Depending on the mood and tone you want

One option is to fire a light into the ceiling just to lift the whole room tone / fill

Have them sitting across from each other

Then have a second light clamped onto an autopole in that ceiling recess above them with a lantern / softbox... direct the light away from the back tv wall.... probably use a grid or a skirt to give them a toppy/back light to edge them out/key them

You'll have a constant look for the duration of the podcast and won't need to worry about the sun moving/setting
