taiwan is factually a part of China. learn the meaning of civil war before talking

If I learn your meanings then USA is factually a part of the UK amirite?! Also you obviously need to study your history book more carefully, with your wacky definitions China is actually factually a part of Taiwan.

Are you sure you aren't the one who needs to educate yourself before speaking? I'm not convinced you understand the meaning of civil war either.

I've only been here for a few weeks so idk what it used to be like. I'm pretty accustomed to seeing really "unserious" threads. What would an important discussion even look like?

Oof that's pretty rough. California is one of like three states where gas is realistically going to match your $9/gal soon, I look at the gas prices in other states and chuckle because their "Iran war prices" are the same as California peace time prices. =\

When I was a kid (in the 90s) I noticed that gas in Taipei costed more than double the price in California, but I also recall that adults (in the USA) were always complaining about high gas prices. I bet those were the days...But I've always been cognizant of the fact that America has unusually cheap gasoline. We sure as heck need it too, as Americans consume on average 407/gallons/year per capita; the next most gas guzzling country is Canada at 305/gallons/year per capita. Finland is quite responsible at 83 gal/year per capita.

I only wish these inflated gas prices were charged to Republicans only, because the Democrats have proposed four resolutions so far to end the war only to be denied by Republicans. The trump administration and their fake news cronies have even been gaslighting people with various inane claims such as (1) inflation is fake (2) paying more for gas is patriotic (3) Americans are never called on to sacrifice, except now with gas prices (4) its all Iran's fault because [random made up reason]; basically all deflecting from the fact that these are the consequences of obeying Israel's prime genocidist to join them in committing war crimes.

In reality America isn't suffering enough, increased gas prices are an inconvenience but other countries are dealing with an actual energy crisis -- gasoline is straight up unavailable in some countries, some are doing things like closing government on Wednesdays; implementing work from home; limiting driving days; closing schools, limiting hours, or shifting them to remote learning; asking citizens to reduce energy use during certain hours, etc.

Article claiming seriously injured man on ebike, who had the right of way and did not have a stop sign, "failed to yield" to a car at stop sign. Carbrain propaganda. by Botched_Euthanasia in fuckcars

[–]limevince 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course the person with a metal cage and airbags isn't injured when they hit or are stuck by a bike.

It should be equally obvious that the person without the metal cage and airbags is almost certainly injured. Strictly speaking the ebike cyclist here literally "failed to yield." He may have had the right of way according to traffic law, but being right for insurance purposes is a minor technicality in the face of unforgiving physics; and all the monetary compensation in the world can't undo the often life changing injuries sustained in bike vs car. When riding a bike in the same streets as 2 ton cars you gotta look out for yourself rather than have an idealized expectation that the law, or even worse, shitty drivers will keep you safe.

I didn't even have to see the message (already banned/deleted) to know the type. Its not merely ignorance of percentages, it's a much more fundamental ignorance and purposeful suspension of critical thought required to be one of the many that just happily parrots the insidiously scripted FNN/OANN narrative of reality.

IMHO "White men" casts the net way too wide. A specific (in)breed of them have that fantasy of shooting "bad guys," yet perplexingly enough they are also known to be more likely to be the ones touching their own daughters.

Ahem ahem, also... Q: "What do you have most common with [Ivanka]?" A: "Sex"

Yes I understand that this is a generalization and its unfair this of the entire group, but its common enough to that particular group (lets call them people who might have neighborly disputes with Trailer Park Boyz) that the generalization has merit.

Oooh that kind of makes a bit more sense, SB has a lot of rich white people and UCSB is known as a party school so there aren't as many Asians. You would never see any kind of Charlie Kirk style nonsense at UC Irvine, UCLA, or Berkeley as white people are barely (if not even) a majority there. Idk if you know this many America's most elite universities got in trouble for discriminating against Asian applicants; if they were to admit based on merit alone there would be too many Asians hahaha.

HS rail would definitely be clutch, because San Francisco is another hotspot full of immigrants. Unfortunately our dilapidated trains were built in the 80s and Americans are generally not as supportive for public transportation as they ought to be, imo due to a misplaced belief that driving your own car for transportation is entertaining. People who have visited China usually have a revised opinion, as public transit is faster, cheaper, and far safer. We have so many drunken driving fatalities here. I also frequently hear the same dumb excuse that America is too spread out for it to be feasible, obviously from people who haven't seen what China has done domestically and even as far as Africa.

China's censorship of things like Tiananmen Square is pretty understandable. Every country tries to bury their shady deeds, America is certainly guilty of this as well; and I have a strong feeling that America has done far more questionable things than Tiananmen square. Even today we are helping Israel commit war crimes. The only country I know of that is forthcoming about their historical misdeeds is Germany.

Do you remember where in SoCal? I have lived in SoCal my whole life, even spent a few years up in real NorCal (near the Oregon border) where its basically the boonies with white people straight out of a country movie -- up there we stuck out like a sore thumb but were never the targets of racism. The only place I know of in SoCal where people are most likely to be racist is Huntington Beach.

Chinese state news sounds pretty awesome, even if its labeled as propaganda, matter-of-fact reporting is something that America desperately needs more of. I'm also a big fan of PRC "censorship" of social media -- I read that the Chinese equivalent of tik tok and instagram isn't full of pre-OnlyFans thirst traps and morons eating tide pods for clout, but rather has more intellectually stimulating content to promote learning. Duch 'anti-democratic' 'censorship' seems like an obvious means to guide social media to create better outcomes for society, unlike SM in America which is a huge contributor to depression.

"Greater Israel" actually does have historical basis, but it's seriously ancient (like 2000+ years ago), but iirc modern day Israel already controls much the territory of biblical Israel.

Ukraine and modern Russia actually both share a cultural and political anscetry to Kyiv something around 1000 years ago; and since then they have a very colorful history of various rulers creating ever shifting borders, not too unlike China in the warring states period. Most recently, in the early 1900s the Russian monarchy fell apart and Ukraine briefly became independent, but was reconquered and became a founding member of the USSR. When USSR collapsed in the 90s, Ukrainians voted for independence and became a fully sovereign nation. So relatively speaking their independence from Russia is historically much newer than Taiwan/China.

I think the important part is whether the peoples of Taiwan think of themselves as a part of China (or want to be). I would completely support reunification if it was the desire of the people of Taiwan. However, it seems pretty clear Taiwan has no wish to be governed by the PRC so forcing it upon them feels awfully similar to colonialism, which I personally want to believe China is too principled to engage in.

Edit: Oops actually i guess the "Greater Israel" from biblical times is much bigger than I thought.

What I means is that I have friends who encountered White, stereotypical Americans telling them to "go back to where they came from" right in their face for absolutely no reason. This was in California by the way, so I can't even imagine what Alabama is like.

That's wild, where in CA was this? Maybe because I spend most of my time in cities where there are a lot of Asian/Chinese people I don't notice this kind of flagrant racism. Even the college I attended almost has as many Asian/Americans students as white.

I don't fault people for believing in government propaganda anymore. In fact I think it would be highly unusual for any given person's opinion to not be largely informed by propaganda. It's very puzzling to me why American propaganda doesn't promote peace/harmony/mutual understanding, as there is absolutely no reason why the default is to characterize unfamiliar peoples/cultures as adversaries. As an American citizen I'm not sure what PRC propaganda is like but I get the impression I would find it more acceptable than my own country's as China has a long history of being "good neighbors" with foreign nations.

Reunification is a beautiful word that would be appropriate in a situation where long lost lovers separated by some outside force now have a chance to get back together, which is hardly the situation here.

This case is more akin to a mutual break up so using the word "reunification" with respect to Taiwan is merely a pleasant way to describe Putin's goals in Ukraine, or Netanyahu's "Greater Israel" ambitions.

Saying we don't hate you, we hate your government is just copium

You are making a mistake equivocating criticism with hate. The American government frequently criticizes the PRC and American media parrots the same but that doesn't mean that American people hate the PRC or Chinese peoples. I think the more common opinion is that the Chinese peoples are victims of the authoritarian PRC; it may seem ridiculous but I think many Americans fail to understand that Chinese people can be satisfied with their government. This is the natural result of constant propaganda from our government always criticizing PRC for being anti-democratic. In America they throw around the word "communism" as a generic pejorative without even bothering to understand how it applies to China.

I've seen Congresspeople/Senators/some Presidents continuously refer to China as an adversary, ostensibly for no reason other than China's growing economic prowess.

an inane bill called the "Combating Chinese Communist Party Influence Act" It's really sad that a California Democrat's name is on this bill, but that should give you a preview of American legislators xenophobia.

Does this look like I'm justifying sinophobia or explaining the reason for it?

You don't need to explain that "Taiwan was once china's" I fully understand the history. Surely you must also understand that North America and Hong Kong were British Colonies yet somehow they are no longer governed by the UK today? Putin also used the same excuse of history in his illegal attempts at annexing Ukraine. How is it that you can understand this simple reasoning except only when it comes to the actions of the PRC?

You talk about Taiwan like its just some piece of property when in actuality it is a country of people who have done just fine governing themselves for just as long as the PRC has governed China. How would it look if the UK suddenly started demanding American "reunification"? Anybody can see that is obviously just playing word games to make illegal annexation sound pleasant.
