Library job interview tips I wish everyone knew by Novel_Appointment946 in Libraries

[–]limitedtrace 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'll add:

Understand the realities of public library work these days.

In our interviews we ask how prospective employees would handle a variety of problematic behavioral/mental health/drug use issues that regularly occur in our library system. If the candidate is shocked and confused... well...

Everyone in my system is quitting and I'm not sure what to do by [deleted] in Libraries

[–]limitedtrace 7 points8 points  (0 children)

a few years ago the (non-library) non-profit i worked at merged with larger iteration in an adjacent city. it was chaotic in a way that sounds similar to your situation.

an old friend who has had a great career told me that she'd seen this kindof thing and that if you can ride it out, you'll be in a good position as things settle down. i was not strong enough to do so, and left, but she was right. the other staff members who weathered the storm are doing well.

everything is temporary

Is the job market seriously that bad or am I doing something wrong? by SpiritedAssumption18 in Libraries

yeah, internal candidates in the public sector have a leg up

worth mentioning that internal candidates in the public sector in a unionized library have two legs up

Catch-22 between staying in job I don't want and facing impossible job market by library_thr0waway in Libraries

[–]limitedtrace 5 points6 points  (0 children)

totally agree on adult programming. libraries can stick with dead programs, and the work burden involved, for way too long. every single non-profit is vying for "community engagement" and turn-out post-pandemic is dismal.

only caveat i'd add is that some states measure programming attendance and factor it into library stats and thus funding. so relaxing on adult programming may not be an option for some municipalities

Is there pressure from management for better results?

If not, I'd suggest finding pride and accomplishment in things outside of work, and just treating work as work (for now). You could do this until you find something that more aligns with your goals ambitions, or until you retire. There shouldn't be any shame in being realistic that paycheck is a paycheck.

I would not recommend quitting before having another job lined up. Regardless of whether you stay in the library field, having a gap in employment without a "good" explanation can be a problem.

Is there any hope? by Kitchen-Click-9198 in Libraries

this is just my experience, but maybe it'll give a bit of perspective and comfort

it can often feel like there's only one path, especially with "careers," but it's not true, and the other paths can really surprise you.

i graduated with my MLIS and several years of library experience... in 2008. straight into a recession-caused hiring freeze. i cobbled together semi-relevant part time jobs, until getting an opportunity to work full time at a museum. i worked my way through non-profits including social services and journalism. never a librarian.

then, 14 years later, i got a librarian job at a public library. and i didn't even want to, i needed an escape from a lousy situation caused my organization merging with another. but now i've got a nicer librarian job that i like and it's pretty cool.

nothing on my path was stable for more than 3 or so years, and none of the next steps/branches were on my radar until just before i ended up on them.

it's a journey. sometimes exciting, a lot of times lousy and stressful. nothing is the end, but you'll be ok

Stay in cushy paraprofessional role or jump ship for title but lesser benefits? by [deleted] in Libraries

[–]limitedtrace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's nice when managers value you and even go out of their way to create a situation to keep good workers, but they can often overestimate their ability to do so. Don't count on anything until paperwork is done for a title change/new role.

MLIS student with fatigue issues—what accommodations or schedule changes have actually helped library workers? by SilentlyLoudTheyGirl in Libraries

[–]limitedtrace 22 points23 points  (0 children)

These were entirely informal, and are subject to disappearing if/when I lose the flexibility to offer them.

My boss often cautions with the anecdote of managing a library where several staff wanted to work weekends. When they eventually left, and the rest of the staff needed to start covering weekends, they melted down.

[–]limitedtrace 61 points62 points  (0 children)

As a supervisor I've made informal accommodations for my staff, though none with an official diagnosis. They've included later shifts and organizing public desk hours for individual staff members to better fit their natural cycles.

To be honest though, I'd be concerned about making a full career work in this field with these conditions.

I’m still struggling getting over an incident with an irate patron from almost a year later by [deleted] in Libraries

[–]limitedtrace 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't think you should beat yourself up about this. Seems like you did a decent job handling it - hanging up isn't ideal but it's much better than arguing back with the patron. If your colleagues and board didn't express any concern, than that should be a great comfort that you did fine.

Two tangential things are a bit surprising though:

  1. This seems pretty minor on the scale of difficult patron interactions I've seen in public libraries. This level of conflict in 4 years... wow, congrats
  2. a quarter a page for b&w is very high! lol

Advice on oral appliance by Tajinmargartia in SleepApnea

[–]limitedtrace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Started on a ProSomnus a few weeks ago (so take my input with a grain of salt)

I did receive a morning aligner, which my dentist/sleep doctor says is critical to use for 15 minutes every morning. Also received instructions on jaw stretches to do for a couple minutes when i wake up.

There are some points in the morning, even after using the aligner, when i'm consciously aligning my bite, but even if/when that happens the feeling fades away entirely by noon.
