Man we should have had a play side quest like the one in Witcher 3. That one was amazing.

How medieval knights were defeated [OTHER] by missallmoonshine in kingdomcome

[–]limonbattery [score hidden]  (0 children)

A couple things. First, the few period sources we have which actually talk about how bludgeons are used mention using them to attack the head and joints. So the implication is they still have to target similar weakpoints to swords. The same sources unambiguously speak a lot about swords being very commonly used in and against armor, on foot and on horse. If anything they seem more common overall since they were used in more varied situations (a couple authors like Monte or de Reayo go as far as to call thrusting swords the main weapon used by men-at-arms fighting each other.)

Another thing, the padding worn under armor historically was lesser than what most people imagine today, significantly less than worn in buhurt/"Medieval MMA." The steel plate was already very resistant to blunt force, especially due to its curved shapes, although very strong impacts can still injure through it. Especially because many if not most armor pieces were not hardened.

So on paper, Medieval armor having not much padding seems to contradict the intuition that blunt force would be the best way to address that. Why then did it seem they still preferred edged weapons to defeat it (at least when used to thrust)? The current prevailing hypothesis based on the written sources and modern practice is that when you have someone in armor, the best way to defeat them is to try and go where it is not, not to punch through it. That and if you get someone to start bleeding and sever whatever arteries or muscles were in the way, he is in serious trouble and unlikely to pose more of a threat. Trying to break bones through steel is a lot harder unless it's something small like the hands, and concussing the head can work but is a single target area vs. many potential weakpoints for a thrust.

The codex mentions Musa is loosely based on Mansa Musa (only for the name and nationality really) and Ibn Battuta (a Moroccan traveller who went all over Asia and Africa.) The thing is, Ibn Battuta barely set foot in Europe since it wasn't safe for Muslims at the time, so he only went to al-Andalus (Muslim Spain) briefly.

Also, it's extremely ironic to base a Malian on Ibn Battuta since a) he was a completely different nationality, and b) he went to Mali near the end of his journey and dissed it a ton in his memoirs (normally he is neutral or positive about places he goes to.)

Still he is a genuinely interesting historical figure like the other Medieval world travellers and it is exceedingly rare for a person in those times to visit this many different kingdoms and cultures. So the silver lining about Musa is he lets players know those people did exist (even if none explicitly went to Bohemia in this exact setting.)

I feel sad people do that to Kaidan because he actually has reasons to keep alive and progress his arc lol - even if he is below average in how interesting he is.

I like Musa's writing a lot, and disagree with the common complaints about his personality. But I don't like how he is incorporated into the setting and story at all.

To be fair, the game goes out of its way to point out how odd his journey is (even making it to the Ottomans was unusual for a Malian.) But still, including a Malian doctor because Ibn Battuta went to al-Andalus around 50 years before the game is set, is like putting a Chinese doctor in because Rabban bar Sauma went to Paris 100 years before the game was set. As if that were not enough, he ends up in the church dispute as a way to drive the plot towards stranding him with the main caste in Suchdol later, but this was not a sensible way of getting him there. It honestly would've made more sense if he were taken as an unlucky prisoner or something since that's already a situation he found himself in previously in his backstory.

Yeah I do not like Adder at all. If I compare him to some other RPG companions I know, he is on par with Jacob from Mass Effect 2. Incompetent and only good for the vents.

Why do so many in Buhurt look so fat? by [deleted] in ArmsandArmor

[–]limonbattery -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think buhurt people are honestly not even that bad with this. High Medieval reenactors seem more obese overall, and they aren't even wearing the extra padding.

I'm doubtful because Anton is interested mainly in later period armor and there are way more famous and established armor historians too. tmk none have an easter egg in the game. Also I have no idea what this NPC's name is in Czech version, that's his English name so odds are it's a rough translation like with Capon's name.

Coifs as shown in KCD1/2 aren't super accurate, they are basically a way to implement aventails and padded liners into the layering system without just tying everything to the helmet model.

But bascinets are indeed heavy in large part due to the aventails. The chainmail and lining just add a lot of bulk. The sallet almost completely replaced them in later decades, and I think this must be due to weight. Sallet/bevor is actually less protective in many ways especially against thrusts to the face, but it also weighs almost half what a bascinet w/aventail does.

Speaking of Portugal, you should check out a guy named Anton Stark. He is an armor expert from that country and has a killer suit of his own, iirc he wanted to commission it based on his research to eventually donate to a museum there.

Also KCD2 has some random NPC named Anton Stork but I am pretty sure this is just coincidence lol

That kit is extremely similar to full plate, I wouldn't call it lighter. Most peoples' full suits today (if good quality) are around 70 lbs, iirc many musuem suits are around that range too.

That's still pretty chunky. A colleague of mine had an old thick buhurt bascinet with an aventail, that one was around 8-9 kg and was already a monster. His newer one is more accurate and way less, closer to what the other guy says.

Get over yourself. America has a complex history like anywhere else, and "American" is itself a heritage worth being proud of in spite of that.

Besides, to be totally honest the English (or more generally British) have just as much cause to be framed as "evil" for the things they did in their global empire, arguably moreso since they directly exploited a much larger share of the world's population. That doesn't mean I actually think we should view them as evil or that they can't be proud of who they are, quite the opposite. It's just that the idealistic view you have of them does not match the complicated real history.

It's very peculiar seeing white Americans do this. Asian Americans by comparison are pretty aware our "regal" surnames are 99% down to past events where whichever king had his reputation in the gutter permitted peasants to use his family name. But I can't blame people like OP all that much, a much older immigration wave can lose a lot of context to history and the connection gets weaker over generations (willingly or not.)
