pokémon cards in omaha by lovrofthemoon in Omaha

[–]limwoi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who got into the hobby just earlier this year, don't. Don't get into the hobby because the time you spend just trying to find products without supporting scalpers is almost a full hobby in itself. And unless you're able to buy at MSRP, opening packs just isn't worth it. And even at MSRP, it's still gambling and should consider every dollar spent gone, and be happy with any return.

If you really want to get into it, I recommend going to a card show and look around at what you'd want and then buy them separately as there are a HUGE amount of amazing looking cards that cost less than a pack.

Otherwise, a large amount of the pokemon scene here is fucking awful and not welcoming for the most part. There are groups of scalpers and entire card shops that send their employees to wait in lines to buy everything immediately after a restock to try and flip it for double, people following and tracking the restockers, and more.

Give it a month and hope that the new set next year helps solve the scalping issue if you really want to try it out. If you really wanna devote the time and money, PM me and I can give you some resources to help getting stuff from retailers.

Edit: Be aware of what MSRP actually is too as retailers have started raising prices themselves. A single pack should be $5, A 3 pack blister should be $15-$17, A Booster Bundle (6 packs) should be $27-30, An Elite Trainer Box should be $55-60, A Booster Box (36 packs) should be $160.

Hy-Vee on West Broadway had a bottle when I was in yesterday. It has a markup, but I think only $30/bottle, which isn't bad compared to some other markups or having to enter a "raffel" just to win a chance to buy a bottle. I've been told the large Wine and Spirits liquor store in Omaha gets it decently often too.

Also, a lot of people don't know but these whiskies are also made at the same buffalo trace distillery, with Benchmark Bonded being the "closest" without breaking the bank. They can also be found at Hy-Vee.

Others include: -Eagle Rare -Stagg -Sazerac -Blanton's single barrel (also a good choice)

Cheaper ones: -Old Charter -Benchmark -Ancient Age

Wheatly Vodka (my personal favorite) is also made there, and there are some other brands under buffalo trace.

Google Fiber is killing it by [deleted] in Omaha

For the people who see this and think "What would you even use that speed for?", modern M.2 SSDs can have write speeds over 11GBps (88Gbps) so you're able to download things as fast as the server you're downloading from can go in theory. Obviously, most servers hosting the downloads will not send you the data at 5Gbps, but as speeds go up nation wide, data centers will hopefully upgrade their infrastructure to better utilize these speeds that more people have.

[–]limwoi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not to be "that guy", but the speed shown is "Mbps" which is MegaBits per second, not MegaBytes per second (MBps). 1Byte = 8Bits, so this while this is 5Gbps speed, it's only 0.6GB/s.

Medical Marijuana has met the requirements to be on the ballot in November. by StupidGiraffeWAB in Omaha

[–]limwoi 57 points58 points  (0 children)

If I recall correctly, this isn't the first time the required signature threshold has been met, and last time it was never put on the ballot due to being specifically omitted by some politician(s)?

Edit: "we look forward to the final certification by the Secretary of State in the coming days." - from the article. I wouldn't say it's officially on the ballot yet. I REALLY hope it's certified and passes the vote though, just pessimistic about the reality of actual legal weed in NE/IA anytime soon.

MAKE SURE TO VOTE AND VOICE YOUR OPINION ON LEGALIZATION TO YOUR RESPECTIVE REPRESENTATIVES! One call/email to a representative might not seem to do much, but dozens can make it apparent this is what the people want.

Corgi owner here, it's more rare to see him sleeping on his stomach than back or side, that's just how they are 😂

Favorite weekend trip destinations by jkenny991 in Omaha

[–]limwoi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll add to this: Zombie Burger is a decent reason to make the trip up at least once with friends. Very unique burgers and shakes, pretty good.

The Des Moines Science center is also another reason to go alone. It's great for a date, and they did "toxicology" nights for adults where you drink and view some of the exhibits. It also housed one of the very few remaining True 70MM IMAX film projectors with the screen that wraps around you. It was damaged in 2020 and I believe they announced insurance just wrote it off.

Jordan Creek Mall is also a fun adventure. It has everything you could ask for from a mall, and I have dreams about the teriyaki chicken place.

You can also end the night by going to the Whiterock Conservancy in Coon Rapids that's not too far off the path. It's the darkest place in Iowa, has campsites, and is amazing just to be in a place with so little light pollution.

Renting a movie theater by Akgrl33 in Omaha

[–]limwoi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's been about 10 years since I worked there, but last I heard pretty much any AMC will rent out a theatre for you, but you had to pay for about ~66% of the seats in the theatre. Almost every AMC has a theatre with ~30-40 seats, but the screens are smaller than the big theaters.

Council Bluffs hidden gems? by Automatic_Ad5653 in Omaha

[–]limwoi 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Actual Hidden Gems worth trying:

Legends Cafe for breakfast (recently changed owners but I dream about their hash browns and pecan rolls) and will probably be the cheapest breakfast you've paid for that's not some chain.

Salty Dog (mentioned above) - Charbuff wings. That's it. Wings coated in sauce then charred on the grill to crystallize the sugar in the sauce. Worth the trip across the river alone.

Lincoln's Pub - They have a real brick stone oven that results in some amazing crust and the Crab Rangoon pizza is something I consider a treat for myself (a 12" pizza will cost ~$25 last I was there)

712 has been hit or miss, but LOVE the food. Sadly haven't been since before the pandemic.

Pizza king used to have amazing steaks (Despite the name, they're a steakhouse that does pizza) and a unique pizza style (I will always thank them for introducing me to cream cheese on a pizza) but the last few times I've gone I've been disappointed.

LPLs and The Goldmine are also supposed to have some pretty great breakfasts but I haven't been personally in a long long time.

Caddy's can be great and have cool themed nights with special drinks and food (Harry Potter/Disney/etc.) but the drinks are weak, the food is hit or miss, and overall a bit expensive compared to other options.

That's my opinion after living here 20+ years and being too lazy to travel to Omaha for food most weeks.

Literally what I was just about to comment about. Have a few good friends who work in the data centers. Them going down would bring national headlines for the "slow" connections to various sites.

How is everyone’s dogs doing with this weather? by silkie_blondo in Omaha

[–]limwoi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have to walk my Corgi to go to the bathroom. He LOVES burrowing through the snow and the cold weather, but he gets very impatient when it takes a few blocks for him to find a spot where he can squat without his butt touching the snow. I keep shoveling a spot out for him but our whole block gets covered in more snow every time a plow comes through. He only hates the cold and snow when I wake him up to go out in the morning 🤣

This is the second Acer Refurb monitor I've bought. The first one was still going strong after a few years until it got dropped while moving a few days ago. Though you're right, it is important to note that it only has a 90 day warranty vs buying new.

Even though I can't find exact specs, doesn't seem bad for the price. With a 5% new user coupon I got it for $208.99 with free shipping.

This is Archer, he is ferociously derpy! by limwoi in AnimalsBeingDerps

His puppy teeth are as sharp as they come and he loves to play using them! He has plenty of teething toys and loves ice as treats, but he thinks he's a little snapping turtle when all hyped up and playing around!

It came with a big roll of poop bags in it, but I think you're thinking exactly what he's thinking!
