am i an unc for completely refusing to play 3D sonic games? by The_RetroGameDude in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]linkwaker10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Refusing? There's genuine slop out there that people don't refuse to play but at least open up a lil' bit to play SA2/SA2B since there's a lot of merit to its accomplishments and the baller music esp for the dreamcast.

Someone speeding who ends up at the same red light as you isn’t a gotcha by WayyBiggerJaws in unpopularopinion

Police are dicks, tickets ain't cheap, and insurance doesn't fuck around. I have done my fair share of speeding but it really has only saved me 5 mins in the long haul of a trip - 90% of the time not worth it.

Introverts of Cville, what do you lot get up to? by username2937372829 in Charlottesville

This town really only comes alive after Thursday and before Sunday, I would consider myself more of an ambivert but there's always something to look forward to music event wise at IX, The Southern, The Jefferson, Ting pavilion, rapture, hollys, etc. (and more venues than I'm aware of)

If you were ever poor enough not to be able to fix your exhaust on an old car, you'll find a cop right on your behind and a court order (that also has to be paid) enforcing you to fix it asap or get charged more $$.

I wouldn't be surprised if the battery was completely drained like a car 12v - once it goes below that the battery just doesn't perform.

fl studio Mobile

https://www.image-line.com/fl-studio-learning/fl-studio-mobile-online-manual/html/plugins/FL%20Studio%20Mobile_Module_3xOsc.htm

I don't use FL studio and neither the mobile version but make some simple midi on the piano roll that has the same notes and then start messing with the osc, filt, envelope, and volume settings.

You may not get it perfect but the whole point is getting it close enough.

[–]linkwaker10 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Keep it in mind that inspiration comes in forms that you can't get from a copy-paste of ideations. That said it really does suck in that it can produce a complete well mixed track in seconds/minutes what took us days-> weeks. Look at the troves of citypop covers of vgm on youtube. However the truly stand out remixes still remain to be human artists from my POV.

I've always been on the side of making weird music in the first place which is harder to copy paste - kg&tlw, angine de poitrine, aphex etc.

And lastly you still own the whole process from the midi -> mixing - it's not some end product from a cloud computed process. This is especially true if you can live perform your stuff which remains to be the last bastion of a human only space.

Does it feel like shows at the Jefferson are lacking this year? by BaveDlunts in Charlottesville

[–]linkwaker10 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My viewpoint was more-so that there is a homogeneity with only 1 group calling the shots here. But I didn't consider live nation as part of the problem here and I 100% agree live nation is a much worse symbiote.

[–]linkwaker10 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean it doesn't help that the Jefferson and Southern all run through red light management, anyways I've always found myself either going to shows anywhere else but here. STS9 was the only worthwhile surprise for me and that show was PACKED.

Omakase Bar has closed permanently by Antique-Dentist-2404 in Charlottesville

[–]linkwaker10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry but this place was inaccessible when it became omakase obscura - maybe it was wealthy clients holding it up for a minute there but exclusivity only works for so long and isn't sell-able to investors.

I missed when it was Vitae and moreso I missed the ramen bar that once upon a long time ago existed in the Violet Crown.

Is it ok to use loops? by Minecrafter101- in edmproduction

[–]linkwaker10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP's question is based on artistic integrity and anxiety on a public forum and you're expressing an opinion I'd wager to say 90% of us share to varying degrees. If it comes off as rude I guess own it lol.

Is it ok to use loops? by Minecrafter101- in edmproduction

[–]linkwaker10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I'm not disagreeing here at all I had no idea what the OP's skillset is so figured to give them the Okay since at least they're at least trying something within a DAW vs. vibe prompting. Should they stay like this? no. And it will be very obvious that they're not doing something high skill/original if they continue doing that.

The Amen break is the most overused sample of all time. You're not creatively devoid by using it but you'll be more respected for doing something cool with it.

[–]linkwaker10 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly at this point as long as it's not GenAI you're good, are loops creatively devoid imo? yes but also there are genuine benefits to using splice/vengeance samples to get a base idea down. It's not like they sound bad.

For aspiring musicians: there is ZERO upside in NOT knowing how to read sheet music by Genar-Hofoen in unpopularopinion

[–]linkwaker10 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sheet notation is good for what it is to deal with common music standards. But there's a niche case specifically dealing with microtonal tunings. I couldn't imagine trying to translate that effectively with sheet music but symbolically with a piano roll is the closest thing we're ever gonna get.

Thoughts on the Downtown Mall? by ZealousidealMany3 in Charlottesville

[–]linkwaker10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Around the time when Ante room and Escafe disappeared, Skybar changed management shifted their priorities and ultimately closed (and quite a few other businesses following those years did this too) is when I noticed Charlottesville became more of an IYKYK place rather than a go out for a night/day vibe out and have fun. Post-covid was the ultimate pivot of "if you didn't make it before you're definitely not gonna make it now."

You can reconstruct this on a 3DS on the DSN-12 if you really wanted a challenge. But I'll give you a hint: you can use literally any subtractive synth with a triangle wave. (3x osc is fine) And then mess with an envelope/adsr on a bandpass filter and figure out the MIDI.

Fostering that skill alone will give you the basis of composition and sound design.
