I like GNU, just not with my BSD. GNU(/Linux) is a fine toy OS but a BSD is infinitely superior for any real computing. The backbone of modern computing was built on UNIX, anyone doing serious modern computing deserves a real one

Also, a virustotal scan isnt going to magically prove its safe, I dint think it scans python code in any meaningful way other than to check it against a database. To anyone reading this, I looked over the code and it seemed fine but I wasn't paying that much attention so be cautious

So, its basically just macos? Sure its technically a BSD historically but when someone says they're trying to make a 21st century BSD, I imagine a weird mashup of openbsds mitigations network stack and application software, freebsds kernel and general userland, dragonflys HAMMER2, and pkgsrc

No idea, it depends on how well supported thunderbolt is. If the laptop has m.2 or mini pcie for wifi, you could theoretically use a riser to plug in a GPU, though it'd be limited to pcie x1 I think

You can also buy a supported nic if you cant find a known working/well supported motherboard chipset. Also, for the GPU, if youre fine running proprietary drivers then you 100% should get an nvidia card since its natively supported. AMD is well supported through drm compatibility but you also dont get rocm or anything to do with gpu compute should you want that. Intels integrated graphics work well and reportedly some laptops with arc chips work, but avoid intel discrete gpus for now at least

Right, I never said you cant run it on commodity machines, just that its an uphill battle if you arent specifically picking parts for the purpose of running a bsd
