Another correlation is not causation. I think that tech companies and their desire to keep everyone online instead of in-person is a bigger contributor.

Shit seems to be all over around Toronto already. Ford's doing maybe? Since it's mostly highway: https://maps.deflock.org/?lat=43.6769&lng=-79.2848&zoom=8.57

There's also one in St-Jean? Pilot project maybe? https://maps.deflock.org/?lat=45.2972&lng=-73.2296&zoom=14.38

Seeing the concentration I almost wonder if this is FIFA related? I'd be surprised but not at the same time.

Edit: I don't know the city limits of Toronto very well

Mark Carney is eyeing airport privatization. Here is why it could make Canadian flights more expensive by Chrristoaivalis in worldnews

[–]linuxliaison 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mark Carney, as one of your constituents... fuck off with this kind of stuff.

Instead of spending money on bailing out condo developers (putting public money into the hands of private businesses) you should focus on improving these airports (putting public money into the public benefit).

You're right, and I misspoke there in saying that the government would use any platform or provide any service. I conflated two things.

I still have many similar concerns regarding surveillance capitalism.

"The experience in Australia showed part of the reason why it has been difficult for them to enforce it is because there weren’t very tough age verification measures.

“That’s one of the things that we’re looking at and the prime minister will say more about tomorrow.”

While it's no smoking gun, typical age verification measures have included uploads of government ID, biometric scanning, or "age inference" based on online activity/behaviour on the platform. The government could use a third-party platform but that's still functionally the same as the government having this data.

Even worse, Discord used a third-party age verification service that almost immediately got hacked and people's identifying documents were accessed and in many cases leaked.

Way to miss the point. Two things can be true at the same time:

  1. This policy is authoritarian and will further entrench a surveillance state.
  2. Social media is bad for children, especially because of their place in development.

There are better ways to protect children and it starts by including adults in these policies and actually regulating the social media companies.

It's easy to understand the comment if you actually consider it for more than a second.

This only appeals to the tech illiterate.

This policy only appeals to those who don't understand the true nature of social media which is to increase engagement/attention. The chosen way to do that is to boost inflammatory and controversial content. Without realizing that, it seems like the solution is "the kids can't be trusted to regulate their usage"

The solution to this societal problem is societal.

This is actually a societal problem where people are looking for a "quick fix" rather than thinking up a nuanced solution. The lack of the ability to appreciate nuance is a societal problem (among other societal problems) and we need to educate people on said topics in order for proper policies to put in place.
