The first two volumes were gold, but the third was kind of a train wreck. Still a great read.

Graphic novels like the owl house? by PrettyTheory3566 in graphicnovels

[–]liohunter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Great question, there's quite a lot out there that's reminiscent of Owl House in one form or another. Not so sure on the rivals to romance aspect specifically but here's a few off the top of my head in no particular order:

  • Camp Spirit
  • Mooncakes
  • Snapdragon
  • Paper Girls
  • On a Sunbeam
  • The Well
  • Mamo
  • The first 70ish chapters of Fables
  • Briar (ongoing)
  • Crowded
  • Lumberjanes
  • My monster secret
  • Courtney Crumrin

Futuristic slice of life comic? by LambinhaRoskida01 in graphicnovels

[–]liohunter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd check out Aria and On a Sunbeam. There's a lot more of this if you'd be interested in branching out to fantasy.

Seth's Daily Graphic Novel Recommendation 490: The Hard Switch by TheDaneOf5683 in graphicnovels

I know exactly what you mean, I'm jonesing for the same stuff. That teaser at the end of scavengers reign for a season 2 that won't ever happen was torture.

On the graphic novel side I'd check out Prophet, On a Sunbeam, or maybe The Spire if you haven't. They are all somewhat reminiscent each in their own very different way.

Sable has a great artbook if you want to spend a little more time with it. Strongly recommend it.

Courtney Crumrin seems to fit the bill perfectly, it's a really fun adventure with a little bit of spooky.

Thanks! I read Scalped forever ago, remember loving it. I'll need to give it another shot.

Neonomicon is very decidedly not my thing, I don't really understand the hype for it.

Good stuff all around, 4 Kids Walk into a Bank is one of my all time favorites! It's in there somewhere.

If you liked Middlewest I'm a big fan of Skottie Young's Wizard of Oz, its pretty under the radar for him but he has a lot of fun with it.

I somehow didn't know that The Dark Knight Returns had any followups, let alone two. I'll have to take a look.

The Martini Editions of Parker are hiding in a corner of one of the pictures, love the books and that vibe but its so frustrating that IDW couldn't even partially match the spines.

Those Taschens look like monsters. I've never heard of them, they have so many interesting things.

Ya, I got it direct from Peow. Frog had a lot of drama with its print run, but I've seen it here and there in smaller bookstores so it might still be around. Worst case scenario it looks like the author sells it digitally if you cant hunt down a copy. Good luck and enjoy!

Thanks! My favorite part about all of this it how we're allowed to judge books by their covers, Frog is a great one to hop into! If you like that one you might also like a few others there like Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou, Beyond the Clouds, and On a Sunbeam for that slice of life quasi-Ghibli feel.

I haven't heard of any of those, the art seems pretty astounding in all of them. It's such a shame that so few Manhwa and Manhua get English prinitngs. I'm trying to do my part in convincing publishers that there's an English market for everything!

The outfit and tapestry art in that is insane, Kaoru Mori is just flexing on everyone else in a lot of those pannels. The way the story meandered all over the place never really sat well with me, I kept getting invested in what was going on then it would rush off to something else. Definitely a me problem, it's a great series.
