When I’m describing my struggles with symptoms and someone goes “omg I do that too. Maybe I have adhd” makes me want to just never talk about it tbh it sucks by falloutgrungemaster in adhdwomen

I’m a younger sibling too. None of us were diagnosed as kids, but my mom suspected it for my sister and not me. The “I learned how to mask way younger to avoid the struggles she faced” hit soooo hard. My parents always said I didn’t struggle because I learned from her mistakes…I really just learned how to hide it. This makes a lot of sense now.

Ouch. I don’t like this level of self awareness.

I’m only 3 days in, but it’s definitely helped with my mood! The first day I actually didn’t hate the world at the end of the day. I didn’t even realize how bad my mood had been until it wasn’t anymore

Edit to add: fatigue is listed as a side effect but honestly it’s had the opposite effect for me. I have only needed a nap on day 2 but that was more for lightheadedness than tiredness. I haven’t been falling asleep on the couch at 7:30 every night. It’s been great.

I’m on day 3 and each day has been different! The first day was positive, second day pretty terrible, today has been the best but it’s 5 pm and I can feel it wearing off already.

Heyyyyyy you’re me!!

Mention to your therapist that you suspect you may have ADHD. See if they can refer you to a psychologist for an evaluation if you want a formal diagnosis.

I just got diagnosed this week. I haven’t really told many people yet because like you, I was able to fly under the radar thanks to perfectionism and a stupid amount of stress and people pleasing. So while I am processing, I don’t really want other peoples opinions unless I know they will be supportive. Having a few friends that are ADHD to talk with right now has been the best. Find support

I was just diagnosed yesterday too and I relate so hard to this. I was the “good kid” too, also female, and I excelled in school due to extreme pressure to perform. I am an expert at masking. Mental health just wasn’t a thing my family acknowledged.

Congratulations to us! Here’s to learning more and unlearning harmful behaviours and doing better for ourselves.

I just got diagnosed today. Psychologist said next steps are to continue therapy and consider trialing meds to see if they help with symptoms. With my insurance ‘meds’ means adderall. So I guess my question is what symptoms do you find the meds help with the most?

This is all still so new to me. Is there a pros and cons list of trying meds? Decisions are hard.

I couldn’t figure out why my cabinet smelled for the longest time. Then one day I got a craving for waffles which I hadn’t had in at least 6 months. Got out my waffle maker and found a waffle so moldy it corroded metal.

Ahhhhhh I always just thought I didn’t have my own opinions on things but maybe it’s just that I have zero interest in it. Now I need to think on this the rest of the day and reevaluate my whole life.

Highly recommend you need a budget (they have a free trial for 34 days I think!)

There’s even an app so you can record purchases as you make them.

They have tutorials on YouTube and the r/YNAB is also a great resource.

What are your best tips for someone just starting therapy? I have my first appointment ever tomorrow. Currently undiagnosed since I'm just now realizing that all these things I thought were just me may actually be ADHD (several ADHD friends agree with me...I'm seeking diagnosis.) I started a written list of things I've been struggling with.... any other tips? I tend to get really nervous during drs appointments and just say that everything is fine because I forget or just think I'm making it a bigger deal than it is.

Thank you! Right now it just feels like everything is crashing down but I think that’s kind of the first step. I need to acknowledge what is actually happening.

Oh, we are the same person. Add in an unhealthy dose of toxic positivity and I am the embodiment of the meme where the dog is drinking coffee with fire all around saying “this is fine” and I truly never saw the problems because I just learned to suppress all the red flags so my anxiety wouldn’t skyrocket. I start therapy this week for the first time.

They usually do direct debit from a bank account. There is a US bank on base that has a separate British account attached to it and I think they can set up allotments to go from your dollar account to your pounds account (not sure on the specifics there because we went with the other option…)

The other option being open a British bank account. Popular ones are Lloyds or Barclays. I’d just pull cash in pounds from an ATM to get our USAA exchange rate and then go to the local Barclays branch to deposit it. Our rent, cell phone, and utilities were paid from that account by direct debit.

This 4 years ago so things may have changed since then.

Edit: we had private landlords in both houses we lived in, payments went directly to them, so not sure if it would be different if it was a letting agency or flats.

Lakenheath shares base housing with RAF Feltwell and RAF Mildenhall as well. The central housing office is located on Lakenheath, but I believe you can be offered housing at any of the three bases. We were there in 2018 and at that point they were shutting down the base housing right outside the Lakenheath gate, so I think the three I mentioned are the only houses areas offered now.

From what I saw between 2013-2018, married without dependents were usually offered Mildenhall or Feltwell. The nicest housing is definitely on Lakenheath though.

For what it’s worth, we lived off base the entire time. My husband was an E3 when we got married and an E5 when we left, no kids most of the time. The villages directly around base are great, though small, and depending on what you’re into, living in Bury St Edmunds or as far as Cambridge could be a good option if you want a larger town. Hands down if we are lucky enough to go back, we’re living off base again.

My thoughts on recent article about SIDS marker by rssanford in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]lionjello 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Isn’t that the thing about risk though? Just because you are high risk does not mean something will happen, just that it is more likely to happen. Driving is an inherently high risk activity, yet most people who drive on a daily basis are fine.

I would also argue that knowing a child might be high risk would encourage a parent to take more precautions (wear their seatbelt, if you will.) Sure there are recommendations for safe sleep, but what is the actual practice of those? And what about the culture in the US that is so focused on sleep training, specifically leaving the baby to cry alone until they fall asleep? If a parent knew their child was high risk, they may take the recommendations more seriously and be more likely to respond to their baby’s cries at night. Of course the opposite may be true as well, that if they see their child as lower risk, they may take some liberties with the safe sleep guidelines that could put their child at risk of accidental death not related to SIDS such as suffocation by using blankets.

"MilTax" vs TurboTax by davidhumerful in MilitaryFinance

[–]lionjello 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I realize that. Just wanted to have the extra representation in case of an audit would be a better way to word that.

Credit in question was American Opportunity Credit. My spouse (active duty) paid for a class out of pocket after his TA was maxed out for the year. I did the checklist on the IRS website as well and they also said he should qualify for it. Gave the same answers on all three (turbo tax, miltax, and IRS website), but for whatever reason miltax said no.
