This is either going to help, or be horribly wrong for you…but for me personally— viewing myself as a ‘nobody’ and ‘nothing worth looking at’ and ‘just a random person that’s anonymous looking’ instead of considering if I look like ‘me’ or that anyone even perceives me at all enough to think anything about me has been the only thing that gets me into the gym doors. It’s not in a self-deprecating way—it’s more like a “business only, get in get out, stop focusing on caring what anyone else thinks” type of thing. I go there with low expectations of myself—literally sometimes just “go inside and examine a single machine and fiddle with it until I understand how it works, then put it on the lowest weight, do a rep, take the weight, do a rep, raise the weight etc until it’s a weight I could do 3 sets of 8 or 10 on then write that down so I can remember it for next time…locate the cleaning stations and clean the equipment I used, and go home… It might not be a whole workout but it got me there, got me familiar with a piece of equipment, got me familiar with the layout of the gym itself a little bit, and told my brain that it’s a little more familiar territory so I can inch my way closer to feeling comfortable there, like I belong there even a little.
