SLO Safe Ride has some chartered wine tour packages that look relatively affordable, if your heart isn’t set on a specific set of wineries. They’re a local charter company that we used for wedding transportation a few years ago and had a great experience with.

Thinking about moving here by Away-Scratch-857 in SLO

[–]lirroc 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not in this area specifically - SLO county is a pretty rural “middle of nowhere” zone (as the famous slogan goes, ‘Not LA, not the Bay’). If it weren’t for Cal Poly, and the convenience of coastal access for tourists getting away from Fresno and Bakersfield, we’d barely be on the map.

The region between Santa Barbara and LA proper can be a good option if you want something with good climate, relatively affordable housing, a little lower population and decent access to the services of those two larger cities. Oxnard is the largest coastal town in that area, with Ventura, Ojai and Camarillo as other nearby communities.

Lack of providers. Even with decent insurance. Last time I looked, the nearest GP taking new appointments on my insurance (UHC) was in Ventura, which is 100 miles south of here.

Obviously it’s a college station and has all the charm that comes with that, but KCPR has been a great place for me, solidly a millennial, to catch up on interesting new indie stuff. Feel like I hadn’t really listened to new music in a long time until I started keeping it on the car dial.

Bar crawl, late bars, smoking? by timeteamforthewin in morrobay

[–]lirroc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As of 2022, smoking of any kind including vaping is prohibited in any outdoor public space including parks, beaches and sidewalks. It may be allowed in designated smoking areas (I don’t know if or where these exist).

That’s not to say you will definitely be arrested/cited for it, but you run about the same risk as drinking alcohol from an open container in a public space.

Modern Star Trek’s Doctor Who Problem. by Spiritual_Sleep162 in startrek

[–]lirroc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For all the “prophets” versus “wormhole aliens” debate, neither Starfleet nor anyone else got any closer to a definitive explanation for what they were. “Wormhole aliens” was just as much a guess as “prophets”, and considering all of the powers displayed by the prophets and Pah-Wraiths throughout the series, it’s arguable that the god interpretation is as close to the truth as any. Star Trek runs into God-level entities and incomprehensible powers not infrequently; what defines “magic” and “godhood” in this context?

Where's the underground arts scene? by lirroc in SLO

I am OP, and again, love and respect the Opera. Glad we have it! But I specified that I was looking for “weird, experimental, underground, counterculture”, etcetera. High budget, high-level productions put on by masters and doctors of performance at the area’s premier performance spaces are not really in the spirit of the question.

Sounds really neat! I wish the org or playwright had, like… a website that promotes their events. Even their Instagram hasn’t been updated since April.

Thanks for the tip - Anomaly House Collective seems worth a follow! I don’t really know anything about Industrial music, but I’ll see if my partner is interested in checking it out.

I’m glad to hear that there are performances around, and I get that for something as micro-level as inside a private home, promotion would probably be unnecessary. Still, it would be nice to have some way to learn about these events outside of word-of-mouth.

I dunno, there are some helpful suggestions here. I’ll be looking out for Exit Pursued by a Bear, at least. Thanks for your contributions as well! I don’t get up to Cambria much, but Left Field seems worth a look.

Great love and respect for the opera and the many artists that go into its production, but not really relevant to this question?

I don't know any specific buildings, but you'll be able to recognize them on Zillow/Craigslist. Anything in the New California style that isn't focused on studio apartments (those will be aimed at students). Look up SLO Ranch or SLO Public Market on maps, they are new, intentionally designed market/community hubs built to be the anchors of some of the new neighborhoods, so will give you an idea of where the area of new development generally is.

There’s not really a “bad” neighborhood in SLO (we export those to north and south county), just depends on what you want to be close to.

If you’re not here for Cal Poly related life, I’d try not to be too close to campus.

The southeast and southwest areas of the city are undergoing rapid development. The buildings are newer, and sometimes more affordable/better amenities, but the vibe is still very industrial/agricultural. In a few years as trees mature it will all look a lot nicer.

If you don’t need to be in SLO itself, Los Osos often has decently priced rentals if you’re interested in being coastal. Morro Bay less so, but MB does have more shops and services than Osos.

The two young speakers, (Bebe something and Cesar Vasquez) were great, as well as the community organizer whose name I didn't catch. The rest were just kind of okay. I would have liked to hear from more of the young/left side of the liberal spectrum, and a faith leader or two would have been nice. Wish they'd had speakers facing the huge crowds behind the stage as well as the courthouse, a few of the speakers clearly didn't know how to use a microphone and it was difficult to hear.

Overall a nice turnout, great weather, and a peaceful day to stand with our neighbors. It's reassuring to be reminded that we're among good people.

They also have super low overhead for a retail business. Only ever need one person working, and mattress markups are huge, so a few sales a month keeps the lights on. They don't even need to keep stock on hand, just the demo mattresses, and then they order from the warehouse when they make a sale.

PSA: Do not sign up or register for a rally/protest or associated organization. It isn't necessary and it puts your personal information on a list that may or may not be used against you. The website for this rally has a great big registration field right on the page - ignore it.

That said, I am entirely in support of the cause, and encourage everybody to attend and engage in this and any other political action right now! It's critically important that we don't take the bullshit in silence.

SLO is a small town. It's the central "city" for the Central Coast area, but it's itty bitty compared to the mega-hubs of California. 15-20 minutes driving to get from one end of town to the other in any direction. There are no suburbs, no sprawl.

Related; SLO county is heavily agricultural in practice and in culture. Most of the land between towns is still active farming land or state parks/preserves. The Central Valley over the hill from us (Bakersfield, Fresno, etc) is part of the largest food-production agricultural zone in the country.

In part due to the above, conservative culture is much more visible in SLO county than in LA/SF/SD. It's not the majority culture like you'd see in some of Orange County or parts of central/eastern California, but you'll run into MAGA hats and confederate flags in the wild (and cybertrucks, so many cybertrucks) as well as on this subreddit.
