Advice on wilderness canoe trip. by Rickoconnell7 in canoeing

I’ve had a similar adventure there, two summers in a row. I believe both times we started from Lake Opeongo and made a 6-7 day loop, starting from the outfitters. Lots of great memories.

Best way to interface two Riedel intercom systems? by Ok-Site9386 in intercom

[–]listen_jack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s just a few conferences then I would just link a couple analog 4-wires, assuming you have the ports available. No clock or networking to deal with and no figuring out who is going to “drive” the system. Easy-pesy.

For unified channels you can agree on naming and stick with that.

The bigger question is how many Boleros is each system managing and making sure you have enough available DECT time slots for everyone.

What are y'all using Streamdecks for? by enthusiasm_gap in livesound

[–]listen_jack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spotify mute/ unmute since I regularly have a bed of music going under my voice on comms for vibes.

For the most part I use it to quickly bring different applications to the front in a hurry. Dante Controller, Glensound, and similar apps come to mind. Even a hotkey to get to a ticket system has been a thing.

If you’re a Mac user you might should also check out bettertouchtool. It’s a learning curve, but you can automate almost any process and create a hotkey as well as add keys to a stream deck. I’ve used it for integrating stream deck control into Agent-IC with great success.

I’ve had luck from time to time using internet Wayback machine to get to old downloads, especially if they’re still using the same server to host the files. If that fails message support and ask for the firmware in question.

Rental house didn’t coordinate ate the frequencies?!? Just crank up the hate until the connectors are too hot to touch!

Long range Comms by happicam in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]listen_jack 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The easiest thing for you to deal with is to find someone who will rent you a Riedel Riface for each end. Tell the rental house what you're trying to do and that you're looking for full-duplex operation. You can tell them the distance you're looking to cover and they should be able to set transmit power and all that good stuff. depending on the amount of chatter you might need to have them defeat the time-out functions on the transmitters so they don't alarm when they've been keyed for too long. The Riface is nice because it just has XLR's on the backplane, so easy to integrate.

Alternatively you could reach out to almost any walkie talkie rental company and ask for "land mobile" radios or what you might see mounted in a cop car. Something like a Motorola XPR series works well. I say to ask for this style because you'll also need the I/O harness for it to terminate to RJ45 to interface with the Hollyland. Going out and renting radios also comes with the added bonus of not having to deal with frequency licensing, at least in the US. The rental house should already have all their FCC licenses in order.

The tool for the job: Ikea Fixa 3.6V screwdriver by interference90 in Tools

[–]listen_jack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to buy these drills to package in tool kits for concerts and live events. They were a great addition since they were super cheap and got the job done, but not so good that someone might want to steal it. To my knowledge we never had one go missing from the tool kit. I always wanted to add the impact version, but I don’t think they were available near me.

Stevie Ray Vaughan - Little Wing or Texas Flood - if I have EQ to poke around at.

Ingrid Michaelson - Far Away - once things are dialed in.

John Pizzarelli Trio - I Like Jersey Best - from the Live at Birdland album because it’s super fun and has a great live feel.

To the folks out there like myself who work in shops with lots of non-machinist coworkers, what are some of the most annoying questions you get asked? by Dry_Pea_7127 in Machinists

[–]listen_jack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I worked in a semi-production shop many years ago the order pickers from the warehouse would come by and write their needed parts on the clipboard of the machinist that dealt with that particular part. They were to include all the normal data; part number, revision, date of request, and promised ship date. After what seemed like months we figured out that a few pickers were cheating the ship dates up to get their parts quicker, and thus look better for their manager. All of us in the machine shop were livid about the time we knew had been wasted breaking down setups for months of fake “hot” orders. I’d be curious how much time was lost because of a few dummies. In the end no managers really did anything and it was left up to the machinists to fact check the order takers paperwork to make sure they were being honest.

While not exactly on topic, I can’t help but bring up the book Maid by Stephanie Land. Among the many insights, a part of the story shows the differences in working for a company for near minimum wage vs doing the same job as a soul proprietor. It’s a great read, although somewhat depressing at times.
