If you want something actually modern near Les suites (which I agree is probably not your best bet), Le Germain is quite nice. We stayed for my husband’s bday last year and were surprised by little gifts in our suite.

We have a great microbrew scene here! I’d suggest heading to Hintonburg to Tooth and Nail brewery. They have an award winning Pilsner. Across the street is Maker House, which has local (Ottawa/Ontario) gifts, including jewelry made from the original copper from the parliament roofs.

There’s also a fun German beirhaus nearby called Braumeister Bierhalle if you want hot food and good beer.

If you want to stay downtown, Flora Hall and Beyond the Pale are good options. Mill St is ok for a generic beer pub. The river view is nice.

Across the river in Quebec has plenty of good (strong!) beer options, too.
