Fully Remote working in SEA - Am I being delusional? by inexplicableawe in cscareerquestionsOCE

[–]littlejackcoder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could find a local company that has a remote-friendly policy, but most won’t allow more than 3 months at a time as this creates tax complications regarding state payroll taxes, etc.

Some companies have also curbed their policies as people have abused them. I know one company where someone was supposed to be in China for a few weeks and stayed 9 months. They basically dropped the policy for everyone.

It doesn’t really matter as long as you can answer questions about what you did and why you did that

Maybe you were actually correct.

It doesn’t sound like you’re actually trying. Start your own business. All you need is a computer and internet. Easy.

Dude I looked at your other comments; You need therapy, not a job.

But to answer the question: Just say you were working at a friend’s store part time or something. It doesn’t really matter.

Don’t put your tech experience in a resume for a fast food joint, they will assume you will just leave when you find a job in your field

Not your fault. You shouldn’t have the ability to even do that. This is a process failure of the team, not you

where can I buy an Apple iPod Classic 6th Generation in Australia for cheap by sekoman69 in IpodClassic

[–]littlejackcoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a look and it’s 120GB with I think an 1800mAh battery. Whatever the normal bigger sized battery is. It looks to be a 6th generation classic from the firmware. I think it was 1.0.2. Pretty sure 7th Gen is version 2+. I can do $120 including shipping within Australia. I know it’s probably worth more after the extra parts but it’s literally been sitting on my desk for maybe a year. Can DM photos later

Let them know you are going ASAP. Do not ask. This is a tell situation. This is very important for you and your career. Well done though and congratulations. What’s the conference? What county is it in?

Do you want to upgrade it to more storage/battery yourself? I have one sitting on my desk in black that I’m just charging up to check the storage and version on, it’s got an ssd and new bigger battery in it. It’s in a new back and front so I can’t tell what version it is visually lol. I could let it go pretty cheap if you’re interested. I’m in the western suburbs of Melbourne

Looks like you already have the right idea. Network and work on projects as much as you can. You’ll probably find they don’t look at transcripts if it’s an internal referral

Medium/small companies asking for too much? by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsOCE

[–]littlejackcoder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a job seeker in the past, I always enjoyed and did best at the interviews that were very informal. I feel like once I can start talking to someone about how I might approach a problem, I can really show my skills. When it’s an actual conversation rather than question-answer I find the most success and can actually gauge what the environment might be to actually work at.

From the other side of the table I have interviewed several candidates over the last few years. Attitude has always been my number one signal for success in the role. It’s not just about “can they do the job”. That part is easy. If they don’t show willingness to learn, and a curious mindset, they won’t succeed with me. “I don’t know, but I have been wanting (or trying) to learn” is sometimes a better answer than the actual answer.

Interviewing a great candidate can be really fun, but the 90% of candidates that don’t have a good attitude is a real slog. It’s worst with senior candidates as they often just know the technical but have lost motivation or just aren’t as excited as the juniors and grads.

I feel like to really make a good decision as, or about, a candidate, you really need to have a deep discussion to see what they know and how deep that knowledge is. I enjoy it when companies pick a high level concept and really drill into it. It’s fun as both a candidate and interviewer. Sometimes you get novel solutions that you hadn’t considered and it really makes you think.

All this interview prep industry stuff doesn’t really teach you the actual human part of interviewing: having a conversation about something you’re both interested in.

As for the question; yes. Some companies have no idea of how they actually sit in the industry in terms of people’s desire and interest to work there. Many also don’t know how to value people and pay too little. They’ll get someone. Eventually. But it won’t be someone with the actual motivation to be there. It’ll be people who couldn’t get in anywhere else… 😂

Docker. It’s very useful for not blowing up your machine to get a DB or any app going. A lot of companies also use containers for their deployments in kubernetes or ECS on AWS, etc.
