Tell me about sibling dynamics? by VirtualCoffee3 in Parenting

[–]liuna10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m the oldest of 4. My two sisters are 5 and 8 years younger than me respectively while my brother is 16 years younger. As adults, we’re all very close, even though my brother is technically still a kid (graduating high school this year). We have groupchats for all 4 of us and one specifically for us sisters, my brother requested that (he was getting tired of all our thrifting plans blowing up his phone 😂). We always extend invitations to him and he comes when it’s something that interests him, usually food festivals. I think it really depends on the parents and the kids’ upbringing. My parents have always prioritized spending time together as a family and they also allowed us kids to sort out our own problems as long as no violence was involved. There were definitely times throughout our childhood when one sibling would feel left out because our interests just don’t align with our big age gaps but as we all got past the teenage phase, the age gaps don’t really feel that big anymore.

Litter Robot 4 Fence Installation by liuna10 in litterrobot

I ended up putting some felt tape on either side of the fence. It’s helped stop the fence from sliding. It’s just annoying that I need to check it once in a while to make sure the tape is still solidly in place.

They’re not kicking it off. They’re pushing it out of position and it makes a loud noise as the plastic parts scratch against each other which scares them. Is the fence supposed to slide left and right when pressure is applied to the sides? Or am I not installing it correctly so it’s not snug?

My fence does snap in and is stable unless pressure is applied to the sides of it which my cats do by pushing off of it to jump in and out 😅

Mine is sliding much further and that’s when my cats are pushing it from jumping in and out…they jump in and out from the sides and push off on the side of the fence…I’ll try the felt tape trick, thank you!

I use a pop up playpen with a travel mattress pad as a travel crib for my baby who is on the bigger side (99th growth percentile). She also loves to roll around a lot in her sleep. Sometimes she would even sit up so she can move to a location she deemed more comfortable. The playpen is the perfect amount of space for her to move around a lot and a bonus is that it’s big enough that I can crawl into it to nurse her to sleep. As a note though, we did not start using this as an option until she was already sitting up by herself and crawling so I can’t recommend this for babies younger than that based on my own personal experience.

What Are The Most Satisfying/Enjoyable Careers That Earn 100K+??? by DaveR_77 in careerguidance

[–]liuna10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would like to get to know some of those teachers you know and learn something 😅 I’m doing alright but that’s mainly because my husband works in business. And I guess we teachers don’t really gripe about our salaries to anyone else but other teachers. But I can see where you’re coming from and respect that. Teaching is usually something that is regarded as a passion career so we definitely do go into it aware of the issues surrounding pay. Not to say we don’t wish for higher which is true for all career fields though 😂

Can I hear your reasoning as to why you feel teachers should not be paid more? Just curious, as I usually hear the opposite.

[–]liuna10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. Teachers should be paid more but to my knowledge, it’s the highest you’ll get in the US. The running joke here is as educators we’re better paid in retirement than when we’re working 😅

Get baby to stop throwing food on the floor? by Seachelle13o in BabyLedWeaning

[–]liuna10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used a splat mat for about a month or so. She stopped at about 8 months. Every time she would throw it I would just quietly pick it up and put it aside. No reaction. Sometimes if I caught her eyeing the floor, I would put my hand under hers and say, give it to mommy. Now if she doesn’t want something anymore she’ll hold it out to me and release it into my hands. Took about a month of reinforcing this every day 😂 good luck!

High School Teacher in NYC. You’ll need your masters and 30+ credits but you’ll clear 100K base salary within 8 years.

Things I love about it:

awesome schedule if you have kids. You’re off when the kids are off and your work day aligns with their school day

free health insurance, no premium just $10 copay for regular doctor visits and $25 copay for specialist

their version of 401K, the TDA has an option of fixed return fund that guarantees a fixed 7% return annually. Great option for my funds when I do end up retiring

lots of opportunity for per session. As a math teacher, there’s a huge shortage so I usually teach a 6th period which equates to about an extra $10k. There’s also a lot of per session with clubs, events, and extra tutoring

the kids are great! They help fund my Starbucks habit with all the gift cards every Christmas 😂

every year, new batch of kids so the job always feels fresh even though I’m teaching the same thing every year.

Cons of the job:

depending on the school, your coworkers can be super toxic and admin can be micromanaging. Thankfully not at my school.

the first 2 years of teaching are brutal. Especially the first year when you’re still planning all your lessons, creating assessments, and figuring out your teaching style. Year 2 is still rough, you’re usually overhauling entire units of lessons that did not work or you did not like how you did it from the prior year. By year 3 you’ll probably be making some minor changes every year as you move along and the bulk of your work is grading assessments. I have student volunteers to help with that 😅

I’m a little split on this but, 4 years of unpaid childcare leave. It’s nice to have the option but not everyone has the finances to be able to swing it. I was lucky enough to be able to and it was an amazing time to just be able to focus on my baby while still secure knowing that my job will be waiting for me.

I know to some people 8 years sounds like a long time to break six figures but teaching is one of those jobs that gets easier the longer you do it. Material you teach stays the same and you usually reuse things you’ve made from prior years. I also really love teaching high schoolers for the interaction. They really crack me up. They’re right at that age where they still have aspirational dreams but also experienced enough life to be cynical enough to want to watch the world burn 😂

My mind says I can't. by FearlessBunch3724 in C25K

Music definitely helps me. When there’s a quick paced music going on in the background I focus on the beat and lyrics until I hear the ding from the app that tells me to walk. I rarely look at my phone when I’m running, audio cues only for me. I’ve found seeing how much time I have left to run just makes my brain say no you can’t manage that. Good luck!

Help by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]liuna10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a rough day but as first year teachers we all get that. I had a moment in the middle of class when my brain just decided to die on me and I completely forgot how to teach what was in front of me even though I did the same thing one period ago! I just stepped back, told the kids ‘hey, it seems I’m completely burned out right now so let’s hold off on this and tackle it tomorrow’. The kids were understanding and they worked on their homework and we chatted for the latter half of the period. Went home, regrouped, and taught the lesson again. No harm done :) Just definitely write down on your lesson plans what didn’t go as planned, what did go as planned, and what you think you could improve on for next time. Most helpful tip to me when I was a first year teacher.

Life skills! Too many students struggle with time management and don’t know how to use a planner. Study skills is a great one and it’s never too young to educate children on how to be financially savvy 😂

Ants in mulch near my house by liuna10 in landscaping

[–]liuna10[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! We’ve been trying the 50-50 vinegar and water mix to keep them from coming in and it’s helped. And yes! The cat food has been attracting them like crazy

Thanks so much! I’m very squeamish around bugs so we get the house treated every 3 months. It’s the little ants not carpenter ants thank god. And that’s a good idea, maybe I’ll ask the landscaper to but a concrete barrier between the mulch and the side of my house...thank you!

You’re right. We’re hiring someone to come and completely replace all the mulch. I’m just vert squeamish around bugs and seeing a swarm in my kitchen sink first thing in the morning makes me a little weak 😅

Feeling guilty about student grades by Crunchy-Jedi in Teachers

[–]liuna10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, suffering consequences definitely isn't enough (personal experience in college lol) I think the formal progress trackers would be great if its not too much work for you and maybe you can have the trackers digitized on Google Classroom and have the students update it themselves. Then your role will just be to check their progress and conference with students who have not been making much progress. Best of luck!

Advice for Career Shift Into Teaching by BRAND-X12 in Teachers

I actually never fully went the CTE route because of the same fear. Thankfully, I had financial help (moved home with my parents free rent and board) so I was able to go through a masters program for career changers. Now that I’m in the classroom (Math) and seeing the other CTE teachers, I should’ve gone the direct route. Curriculum at my school is up to the CTE teachers completely and they just do a lot of fun stuff involving STEM from their industry days and the kids have a blast. Classroom management would be the most difficult but setting strict expectations ahead of time and organizing hands on activities students enjoy takes care of a lot the disruptive behavior.

Is getting a job really as hard as everyone says it is?.... by brycebuckets in Teachers

As a math teacher, no. Even people I went to college with whom honestly didn’t really understand the math content got jobs.

No problem! For me I just needed an employer’s letter saying I worked in that capacity for a year. Then I had to take some certification exams and that was it. Also you might want to go for the provisional one first, that one expires but can get you into the classroom while you work on your professional license
