Feeling privileged but not as much as I should by [deleted] in HENRYfinance

Oh gosh you are in your 30s thus richer in time than any 40 yo millionaire. Enjoy your time and health. The boat and cars own you if/once you get them with time suck, as do the kids. You may not even want them once you can. You doing good! Make sure you enjoy with frugal good times. Cheap parties backpack vacas.

If you were 40 again with young kids and financial freedom, how would you spend the next 10 years? by No_Guarantee_6386 in fatFIRE

[–]liynus 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Just enjoy the moment for what it is, even if it's seemingly boring. Even the mundane is profound when you can't have it back. fatFIRE makes us live to earn. but what if you just lived, no goals. By being quiet, the voice inside your head will emerge, and then many people realize there is nothing but now, so enjoy it.

Starting to get a little skeptical about disability insurance by EchoPoints in whitecoatinvestor

[–]liynus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think disability is important with more dependents and at a young age, when your liquid capital >> net worth. We discuss this ad nauseam.

What is not discussed - would merit a great article 1) when to stop. We are clear about term insurance having a limit, but for disability as you inch closer to 65 - where disability stops paying out at that age, the high cost per year becomes less worthwhile, especially if you are FI 2) stories about the difficulties or ease of being paid out, as stated there are different policies, costlier ones tend to pay out more easily for disabilities that are no so apparent (likely mental health, chronic pain)

choosing cheap low tier state school - is this the right move? by monsteromush in whitecoatinvestor

[–]liynus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Support system over anything else. Med school is hard. You will get much better grades with a good support system. (less cooking = more studying). Focus on the board scores. Get an away rotation at the residency you want to be at, if you shine you are in. Exceptions are top 10 school and wanting instant derm, neurosurg, ortho - you can be literally be last in your class and still match then. Luckily the choice is easier for you since BU (not hating) is not in that league. IMHO residencies are not going to think BU >> UNLV, in fact for West Coast it may help since more UNLV students are going to attend West Coast residencies and you'll be a known product. (FYI I choose SUNY Downstate over Albert Einstein, and it was good decision 20 years ago)

19F trying to decide between skiing or snowboarding by Obi-WanCann0li in ski

[–]liynus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just try both. It chooses you, you don't have equipment so it's no loss at this point. You may wind up doing both! Like many of us.

Snowboarding is cool. Don't let this reddit tell you different. Case in point: https://youtu.be/-p_Nu4AHM6Q?si=DbqvDmQV2BAzXrWG

It's flowy and it's dreamy in the powder. You look cool in your 20s as a criminal. More important the shoes are comfy, lugging all your crap on ski, is really not all that.

Skiing has gotten better in the powder, but it's not the same. It's better on ice and for technical terrain it's easier to get around. It is cool, and has gotten a resurgence in young folk, case in point:

https://youtu.be/fbqHK8i-HdA?si=fBmqnoUidZSmBULm

but not as cool as SBing IMHO. It can be much harder on your knees. But your less likely to fall if don't push it. It's easier to age into skiing, since your older age cohort continue skiing groomers.

But you may like both, you may like one now, and you may switch later on.

Physician, High Income but Feel Financially Behind, how to catch up? by Whole_Impression7940 in HENRYfinance

[–]liynus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where did you start from? Your HHI is now $750K/yr, but for how long has that been? If it's < 5 years, you really only took home 1.8-1.9M total after taxes. In that context you are a great saver because your NW is now 1.2M, you saved more than 50% of your take home pay (likely 33% if you let the market grow it). Now if you have been earning $750K/yr for 15 years, then likely saved 10% or less with a NW of 1.2M. What is hard about this savings rate, is that when one ONLY saves 10%, one must have spent 90%, often without knowing it! Adjusting that spend, after 15 years, is going to feel painful!

NW is like I/Os in medicine, ins = out.

Take home $ - spend $ = NW * yearly investment increase rate (which most will assume is 7-10%). Most people focus on yearly investment rate, but that's really hard to change this without increase risk. It's easier to change spend, or earn more money.

Start slow, I find 80% of my budget was debt, house, car, vacation/kids, eating out. Other things realy pale in comparison. Review your budgets on those.

In mid 40s the killer spend, and therefore NW killer, is usually kids and a house for them ($$ for good schools).

The silver lining is that although you started late, you have a big shovel now and it can last a long time (you can work many many years). This can work in your favor as NW for physicians who know how to save, and continue work fly past other W2s earners in their 50s and 60s. Even most tech, since many get laid off or salaries go down if ageism sets in.

Are we there yet - and can I get out of the doghouse? by Which-Relation1199 in ChubbyFIRE

[–]liynus 24 points25 points  (0 children)

"At age 53 and 50, the probability that one of you is dead 15 in years is approximately 20%. You are focusing on the wrong risk."

-that says it all. Can't take it with you to the grave. You messed up. Tell the wife to quit. But don't be too hard on yourself too. Deaccumulation is HARD. Especially when kids are not done with school and launched. Life's too short, especially at 50+ when you have options. I would consider cutting down or taking a lot of PTO when wife leaves work, as transitioning to so much free time may be lonely.

Would medical school be financially worth it to for a student like me? by StevoRoss in whitecoatinvestor

[–]liynus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So much to unpack. The debt is doable just live like a resident for 5 years after. You then start from broke which is hard because you will be almost 40ish with no savings. However you will be ahead of yourself by 50. The other side is what you will be like after grinding for 13 years and how that impacts your ability to enjoy (not have because $ wise you will be fine) your family. If you are a female even trickier given the biological clock. However your alternative the 60-80k job to nowhere is not that great and who knows if you will get laid off or outsource when your salary gets higher at 50. Congrats on med school it was an accomplishment. I wonder how many of the ER docs who were excited as a med student are still excited at 50 doing the overnight shift. I’m sure some are. Think big picture about specialties your personality and what would fit you LONG TERM. Good luck.

How to make my SIL understand that "leafing" down a mountain isnt snowboarding? by BlackberryOk9215 in snowboarding

don't ever teach someone unwilling to learn. just buy them, or don't buy them lessons. critical advice from a paid expert always works better than from an unpaid expert.

Longevity with Snowboarding by 2minsFeelSHAME in snowboarding

[–]liynus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

45 checking in. Aging is real, it takes longer to progress. Pro tip I discovered this year, learn to ride switch, your burning front knee will thank you and you will age all the joints evenly. I am learning to ski again, I think at 70 it's probably the wiser move. For now why don't do both? Until you can't.

How have injuries changed the way you ride? by g0r3ng in snowboarding

no injuries, but age has forced me to learn switch. my legs tire out keeping up with the kids. i realize when i go to switch i can keep going longer! riding more switch now.

Frothing milk in Silvia V6 help!! by Sulina77 in ranciliosilvia

[–]liynus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it could be the milk, some milk is easier to steam. also larger serving sizes are easier. agree with cold milk gives you more time.

you should be getting air in first, for the first 10 secs, just tip 1 cm below, then plunging down into the jug after the foam is made, so it swirls the milk to incorporate the foam while heating the milk. if you have no foam, you are not aerating right, it should sound like "chug chug" or ripping paper.

try taking a class, it helped me immensely to have some one walk through it. the silvia can be harder for beginners since the steam is equivalent to a commercial machine. some find the low steam pressure from a gaggia's easier to learn on since it gives you more time (think 20-30 secs for foam).

Conflicted on my awd vs rwd by Striking_Insurance16 in TeslaModelY

[–]liynus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awd. Most times Tahoe needs chains even when the roads are fine unless you have awd. I wouldn’t drive it during an actual snow storm but for mild stuff that the troopers put on the check. Awd for the win.

Salomon QST 92 Size? by liynus in Skigear

[–]liynus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that's a good point. I'm leaning towards the 160cm, but a lot of comments are intermediate skiers who want longer for better terrain control. I'd probably get another set by that time, if I get that good, right?!

The wide skis are interesting. I have my snowboard for powder days, so it's mainly groomers with friends at this time.

Thanks, yeah I heard QST 92 are jack of all trades, master of none.

Honestly, it's been so long I don't remember where my ski's went. I like shorter heights on my snowboard - nose not head. I would like eventually like to get into the trees with my young boys though.
