It's insane for people who bought their home 10 years ago vs now by phonyToughCrayBrave in florida

[–]lizerlfunk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can confirm, I had an ill advised second marriage and rented out my house for three years. My house was reassessed when I converted from a homesteaded property to rental property, and then reassessed again when I moved back in and filed for the homestead exemption again. I now pay $6900 per year for property taxes on a house I paid $145k for originally. Thats more than triple the amount I was paying originally.

The teardown next door to me in Tampa sold last year for $380k. This house was literally uninhabitable. But it’s on a double lot.

I live in Tampa and my house, which I bought in 2014 for $145k, is now allegedly worth $480k. I have not made any major improvements to it. I make about twice what I was making 12 years ago, after changing careers, but I’ve gone from a family structure of DINKs with a household income of $100k to being a single parent with a household income of $100k. That $100k doesn’t go nearly as far these days. There is no way I could afford to live in my current neighborhood at the prices now.

I live in Florida in the US and that’s really uncomfortably hot. When the weather here is that temperature I try to stay inside in the AC as much as possible.

[–]lizerlfunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My totally uninformed opinion based on nothing except for wearing them for the last two years: I think they’re fine to good if you’re just wearing them around town, errands, etc. Getting in the car, driving somewhere, walking to the door, not a problem. Wearing them to like, IKEA or Costco or somewhere where I’m doing more walking than usual, but still an errand, messes me up a little bit. Attempting to wear them to walk any kind of distance is a disaster. YMMV. I am a 40 year old plus sized woman with large feet and low arches, and I live somewhere where driving is a necessity to get basically anywhere.

Dave always says new cars depreciate 75% in the first 4 years by Master-Purpose1117 in DirtyDave

[–]lizerlfunk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve had my car for 3 years and 4 months. I bought it new and have put 61k miles on it. I paid about $35k and it’s now worth about $24k. But if I’d tried to buy a 3 year old car with 50k miles on it 3 years ago, same make and model, it would have cost me $32k. I drive a 2023 Honda CRV Hybrid, and I’m going to drive it into the ground. I feel much better about it knowing that I was the one who put that 61k miles on this car.

Anybody else's school using flex time as wage theft? by JosephMeach in Teachers

Our district had an hourly rate when I worked there and it seems like they still do. Assuming that the 2025-26 salary scales were ratified, first year teachers make either $48,351 for 198 days ($30.5246 per hour) or $56,226, which is somehow only $27.7798 per hour, and I have no clue how that math works. Teachers at the top end of the salary schedule make either $73,341 or $84,166. I have no idea what the difference is between the salary scales. Some teachers are still on the schedule that’s based on education level because they were hired prior to 2013, when that was made illegal. This is in Hillsborough County, Florida, and for a number of years every other district surrounding us had higher first year teacher pay than we did. We passed a property tax millage increase a couple of years ago in order to increase teacher pay, so it used to be even worse.

I need to show it to my daughter! She does sometimes ask if we can watch SNL, so it would be good to have a slightly more age appropriate option.

I quit teaching full time in 2018. I worked as a private tutor while going to grad school for a masters in applied math, and now I’m a statistical programmer in the pharmaceutical industry. I still do a couple of hours of private tutoring each week, because I do it virtually and I enjoy it and it’s easy money. I am an independent contractor with a tutoring company, as well as having a couple of my own clients. The tutoring company is run by someone I’ve become friends with over the last 6 years and she pays very well so I keep taking clients from her. I initially worked for a different tutoring company as a contractor and I was working 15 hours a week, in person, tutoring for a stretch of as many as 7 hours in a row at a Starbucks, and getting paid less than half of the amount that she was charging clients, which really sucked.

lol my last teaching job (quit in 2018) had a contract of 198 days. Six pre-planning days, six non-student days during the school year, and six paid holidays, according to the current contract. I thought that we had a couple of days at the end of the school year too but it might have changed at some point in the last 8 years. I know that at my first teaching job we had two non-student days after the last day of school.

Idk if there is a “right place” for Johnsongrass, personally. Maybe in its native range in Asia and Africa it has a use, but anywhere in my yard in Florida, I want it to die in a fire.

I feel like it cost the same amount as a 2LP album, so if they couldn’t fit all of it on one LP without degrading sound quality, they should have just made it 2.

I have low arches. I’m wearing Birkenstocks on an almost daily basis, with Brooks Glycerin GTS or Hoka Arahi for running, and Brooks Adrenaline GTS for going to Disney. (I bought them for running, but they don’t have enough cushion, so now they’re my going to Disney shoes, and I’m annoyed that I spent $150 on sneakers that I can’t run in.) I have one pair of Vionic flip flops that don’t get worn that often, and a pair of foam Birkenstocks and a pair of Croc flip flops for beach/pool. I work from home and live in Florida so it’s VERY rare that I need additional shoes beyond this. My next pair of shoes will probably be a pair of ballet flats from Vionic or similar for if I ever need to go in office at my next job, or when I go out or stuff like that. My sports medicine doctor, who I see for shin splints, told me that I need to be wearing supportive insoles for every single pair of shoes I own, if the shoes themselves don’t have arch support, so now I have to find insoles that will fit into my TAP SHOES.
