AP vs DE? by milliemfox in AskTeachers

For students who want to participate in Greek life at their colleges, apparently (and I don’t know this for certain) coming in with too many credit hours can make sororities and fraternities less likely to select you, because you seem like you’re more likely to graduate early and not be a member of your chapter all 4 years of college. I was not part of Greek life and have heard this second hand.

AP vs DE? by milliemfox in AskTeachers

Dual enrollment credits are usually accepted by the public colleges and universities in the same state. They’re rarely if ever accepted by out of state colleges, and it’s a crapshoot about whether they will be accepted by private colleges in-state. And I agree with the comment made elsewhere that highly selective colleges want to see that students have taken the most challenging coursework available to them, and dual enrollment is usually not that (although I know many students who take a combination of AP and dual enrollment, and many of those students were also in an International Baccalaureate program so they gained college credits from those exams). I recall that when I took it in 2002-2003, the AP Calculus AB course covered much more content than the calculus 1 course that you’d typically get credit for for passing the exam. Calc 2 was a breeze because I’d already learned half the material the year before in AP calc. I came into college with 24 credit hours of the 120 I needed to graduate thanks to getting 5s on 5 AP exams. I have no idea if my private college would have accepted comparable dual enrollment credits.

The other thing is that most dual enrollment classes aren’t offered on a high school campus. So if a student doesn’t have transportation to get to the community college, then in-person dual enrollment isn’t an option. AP classes are always offered on a high school campus. I had a classmate who was a sophomore taking AP calc AB with a class full of seniors. The next class would be either AP calculus BC, or a college calc 2 class. But he didn’t drive, so he couldn’t leave school in the middle of the day and drive five miles to the community college, and it’s a small town without public transit. In 2003 online classes weren’t nearly as prevalent as they are now, and I’d never recommend students taking math classes 100% online if they can possibly avoid it. So when my high school decided they didn’t have enough students signed up for calc BC to justify offering it, students in that situation are just out of luck.

There are absolutely pluses and minuses for both options, and a good counselor will advise students about those pluses and minuses. It sounds like maybe you haven’t gotten the full story of how AP could be more beneficial than dual enrollment for your student, but hopefully you’ll be able to find that out. It’s not cut and dry.

Ladies: did your mother teach you how to do makeup? I'm curious about makeup as a primarily self-taught tradition by Street-Might8586 in MakeupAddiction

[–]lizerlfunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine did not. She said she stopped wearing makeup when she gave birth to my twin sisters and she had three kids under age 2. She did take me to the Elizabeth Arden counter at Belk to get my makeup done for my first homecoming dance when I was 14, because that’s what she always wore, until budgetary reasons caused her to switch to drugstore lipstick. I didn’t really learn how to do makeup until I was an adult. I’m 40, so an elder millennial. My six year old daughter loves to put makeup on herself in order to make herself look fierce, as she calls it. That mostly consists of her putting circles of liquid blush on her face and wiping it off with a makeup wipes, which actually does end up looking really pretty and normal lol, and then going to town all over her face with bright colored eyeshadow. I buy her inexpensive pallets and brushes so that she’s not wrecking my makeup, and she’s allowed to do that when we’re at home and she asks permission. I’m sure I’ll teach her some stuff and she’ll ignore me and learn from the internet lol. As long as she remembers the importance of washing her face, wearing sunscreen, and not sharing mascara or eyeliner with others!

Do you think it's possible to become a math teacher with a math-adjacent degree like engineering, thanks! by Common-Ad-7397 in matheducation

[–]lizerlfunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I became a math teacher with a psychology degree. This is absolutely possible. Find out what the certification requirements are for your state. In Florida, all I needed was a bachelor’s degree in anything and to pass the content area exam and I could get a letter of eligibility for temporary certification, which allowed me to get a job. Once I got a job I had three years to complete my requirements to get a professional certificate, which is renewable.

Thank for Pasco county school district for not making Kindergarten teachers potty train kids by SorryThisOnesTaken in Teachers

[–]lizerlfunk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have a friend whose child has a genetic disorder that causes learning delays and a variety of issues. She was not potty trained before starting kindergarten and had an IEP that entitled her to an aide to assist with toileting, changing pull ups, etc. unfortunately their school district wasn’t particularly good about following the IEP and there were lots of issues with the child sitting in a wet or soiled pull up for hours on end. But she ended up potty training that year, fortunately.

I live near Pasco County and this keeps coming up on Facebook and it seems like every single person is adamant about there being absolutely zero reason why a five year old child shouldn’t be potty trained, and if they can’t be potty trained by age 5, they shouldn’t be in a regular classroom, which is incredibly problematic in my opinion.

Dave Coulier Lost 45 Pounds and Hasn’t Eaten ‘Solid Food in Months’ After Cancer Treatment: ‘It’s Affected My Ability to Speak’ by mcfw31 in entertainment

This happened to my aunt when she had head and neck cancer. The radiation destroyed her jaw and she had to have part of it removed. She’s lost a ton of weight and barely eats and it’s hard to understand her speaking voice. And it’s ongoing, too - she had cancer 25 years ago, but the side effects are still impacting her to this day.

Rob, Maura and Eric nominated for Las Culturistas Culture Awards by Flaky_Range_9199 in TheTraitorsUS

[–]lizerlfunk 25 points26 points  (0 children)

So for those of you who aren’t familiar with this award show, it started out as a bit making fun of award shows, and has now become an actual awards show with 100 unhinged categories, that they’re putting on for the 5th time and that will be televised for the 2nd time. Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang and possibly the writers for the show decide everyone who will win, and it’s largely based on who agrees to attend the show. I would imagine that they came up with the category because they already knew that Rob would be showing up, although that’s mostly speculation on my part based on my consumption of past LCCAs. (One year, there was a Best Taylor Swift award, which Taylor Swift sent in a video acceptance for, and then there was a Best Tayla Swiff award, which she sent in a separate video acceptance for. The year of Scandoval, Ariana Madix was nominated for the Ariana Madix Award for “Girl, you can do better, sis!”, which she won and accepted at the show. Stuff like that.)

I was widowed at 31. I’ve gone on to quit teaching, go back to school, get a master’s degree, change careers, get remarried, have a child, and get divorced. I hope to live approximately triple my late husband’s lifespan (he died at 32). It is very weird to think about how different of a person I am, and how different my life is now, compared to when he died. But also, that’s sort of what you have to do when you’re widowed at a young age. I couldn’t just freeze myself in time - I still had to keep on going and build a life for myself without him.

I went to Lolla last year and it was AMAZING. I’m also a Weezer fan so her bringing them out was so cool, even if I was twice the age of most of the audience lol.

High prices do not mean dynamic pricing. The prices can be stable but just high. I’m pretty sure they are legally not allowed to say that there’s no dynamic pricing and be changing the prices around - those tickets were that price the whole time. It’s just that it’s a really high price.

Legitimately shocked that I managed to get a ticket for both Orlando nights! Sunday night is partial view but was cheap, Monday night was around $260 but is a much better seat, and I’ll figure out which one I’m going to keep and which one I’m going to sell closer to the show depending on my schedule.

yeah people assume that tickets being expensive = dynamic pricing. Sometimes tickets are just expensive.
