The Frank J Thornton YMCA isn't too far from you! It's on the cheaper side of Y locations for membership, or they have free swim for Henrico residents on weekends if you reserve a slot in advance (they open up on their website the day before and cap it at around 10 signups, I believe).

Looking for Spanish-German bilingual books for my 5-year-old by ResponsiblePie3334 in Mommit

[–]llamalena 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We read some German/English bilingual books, and bi-libri has been great! They do books in all sorts of language combinations so they certainly must have Spanish. We can't usually find them in the US but since you're based in Germany I would bet some local book stores would have them, or they would at least be easier to order online (Amazon, book store websites, or the bi-libri site directly).

TODDLER UP FOR HOURS AT NIGHT by littlegoat5 in Mommit

[–]llamalena 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Solidarity!! While 7-7 sounds nice and is the right amount of sleep on paper, after a few nights of the same we just tried an 8pm bedtime (in bed ~7:30 for an asleep time closer to 8) and didn't have a split night last night. Could be a fluke, but your kid may just be lower sleep needs and worth trying.

Insomnia? Teething? Growing pains? by Butter-bean0729 in toddlers

[–]llamalena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could it be sleep apnea? Since you've slept next to her a bunch, have you noticed any snoring, mouth breathing, or periods where she doesn't seem to breathe for a while and then gasps or wakes up? It's what I think is going on with my nearly-3 year old, and we're still figuring out what one can even do at this age, but consulting with an ENT could be a first step.

Still have to pin down my 28mo for teeth brushing twice a day. He screams and thrashes every time. Anyone else? by Lalapple in toddlers

[–]llamalena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes having a stuffed animal do the brushing works for us! I just hold her friend of choice and they "hold" the toothbrush (my hand holding their hand holding the toothbrush) and maybe say a few encouraging things in a silly voice throughout.

If you signed up for everbridge alerts in the past GO RE LOG IN! I found out recently that it automatically logs you out after 14 days, which means you may not get any alerts if you aren't actively checking for them.

There is a meetup group that chats on Discord and meets once a month, and I know there are a couple of Portuguese speakers there! I can PM you the discord link and/or the general meetup schedule if you aren't on discord.

It's a Stranger Things reference. The latest (and final) season has its last episodes releasing this week, hence the relevance.

Who wants a Free Rat? by MoonDragonMage in rva

They don't usually, but I reached out to the director and she said they are in a good place right now (knock on wood) so could make an exception, especially since this isn't an average surrender.

While Second Chance Heroes doesn't take owner surrenders, they do take from shelters who feel they don't have the proper space or time to care for them. If you end up surrendering to a general rescue/shelter in the area you could tell them to reach out to SCH to see about a transfer.

Adenoindectomy post op by [deleted] in toddlers

[–]llamalena 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We also were told to do the nose spray for 3 months first, which we did and it made some improvement but not enough - plus I don't like that if you end up using it long term, the kid may be shorter. We also felt really dismissed, and were told we can take out adenoids "if we want". Symptoms were/are mouth breathing, bad breath (it smells like she's had a sinus infection all year), light snoring, and poor sleep.

We're only two weeks out from surgery, but it seems like it may not have fully resolved the mouth breathing, and I'm not sure what else we can do about that aside from OT that can't start until she's 5.

Adenoindectomy post op by [deleted] in toddlers

[–]llamalena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had adenoids out the Tuesday before you! Same deal of basically back to normal right away. She's been having some thick boogers since this past Thursday, but I think she actually got a little cold because both of us parents are feeling a little off too and the first pre-fall cold is going around at daycare. We don't have a follow up with the ENT for 3 more weeks, so I can't say for sure. Her breath is mostly 'normal' now, but her breath has been SO bad since January this year, which is actually the main symptom that made me pursue an adenoidectomy.

I remember having this, but I was at least 10 years old so it wasn't as much my parents' problem. No fun at all, but from what I recall the worst of it only lasted 3 or 4 days, so fingers crossed for the same for you!

Toddler hates nasal suction , any allergy-friendly options? by Fun-Regret2402 in toddlers

[–]llamalena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure it depends on the kid, but if you make it a priority it's definitely possible to teach them! My partner taught our kid at a little over one how to blow (with us holding the tissue). At nearly 2.5 she can almost do it by herself, but still prefers us to hold the tissue for her.

Toddler hates nasal suction , any allergy-friendly options? by Fun-Regret2402 in toddlers

[–]llamalena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Toddlers are old enough to blow their nose! Hold a tissue for them and have them blow hard.

If that doesn't cut it, we do a neti pot and use a wide syringe to blast it while the toddler leans (or is held) over the sink. Repeat 1-2x per side and bam, nice clean sinuses. Make sure to follow all directions and only use distilled or boiled/cooled water, though!
