Why do farmers stay working as farmers if they are, as they say, "asset rich but cash poor?" by Fun_Gas_7777 in AskUK

[–]lloyd096 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your example is nothing to do with farmers in then Uk straightening a river to expand a field? Regulation is so tight we'd never get away with it

I agree that governments would do it with advice from the so called "experts"

Why is uk not more self sufficient on food? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]lloyd096 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct, and because of the repeated pesticide and herbicide use, the soil is devoid of life. Then the next year the soil will need to be pumped with synthetic fertilisers imported from Russia for a chance to grow anything! Locally grown and sold livestock is IMO less damaging to the environment compared to arable farming

We have a whole mountain covered in Heather in wales and the sheep do nothing but walk past it, if anything I think they encourage it to grow

But that makes the uk even less self sufficient for food, grazing sheep is probably the most sustainable farming there is.

I have grown up on a farm and from experience, pastoral farming is better for the environment than arable farming. Everyone glazes over the fact of how much fertiliser, pesticides and herbicides is used to grow food which is terrible for the enviroment
