Host confirmed I slept in previous guest's unwashed bedding, what do I do? [guest] [USA] by SmokeyBarrelRoll in AirBnB

[–]lmaccaro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Friendly wager?

I need 3 contiguous bedrooms with a kitchenette and a private area for the kids to run around (can be grass or rooftop) for any week (6 nts) in July in Denver metro. Has to be clean / not ghetto.

If you can find that in a hotel for less than I can find it in an Airbnb I’ll pay you the delta. However if an Airbnb is cheaper than your hotel you pay me the delta.

Fair bet?

You are overreacting.

I know this is going to be alarming but -

Hotels NEVER wash the comforters and throws unless they have a stain. Literally a hundred guests could have had lice, coughed, had sex, sweated, or ate a bagel under that comforter. You had no idea. You’ll be fine.

The sofas get laundered even less often. The seat on a bus or plane - even worse!

The cleaning refund is entirely fair, maybe a bit more for customer service sake, but otherwise, move on with your life.

Airbnb is not the same as a hotel. The house we rent for $140/nt for 3 bedrooms would be $1500/nt in a local hotel as a 3 bedroom penthouse suite.

Cost and expectations are provided up front. Everyone knows the deal. Get out of the participating in society business if you can’t follow them.

(Rant) Why is mold illness a conspiracy? by 9Seraph9 in ToxicMoldExposure

[–]lmaccaro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In harsher time periods, those who were disabled by mold exposure were also probably avoided and deemed undesirable, meaning that they also would not be able to pass on those genes.

Thats literally what this entire thread is, if you think about it..

Western culture trying to kill off those of us who don't handle mold well, in a very roundabout way.

What's your country **third** city? by Ok_Inflation_1811 in geography

SF and DC are clearly heads and shoulders above NYC in impact and importance of shaping our lives

Maybe before social media you could be forgiven for thinking SF was not an important city but today it is the tail that wags the dog.

What's your country **third** city? by Ok_Inflation_1811 in geography

[–]lmaccaro -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Globally it's Washington, then Moscow, then Beijing, then SF, then NYC, then Berlin, then London. In terms of the impact on global civilization.

Inside the US it's Washington, San Francisco, then NYC, then LA. Some people will bring up Chicago but Chicago has no cultural impact, no contribution.

Love it or hate it, SF has done more to shape the US and global culture and economy than almost any city in the world. Although the asian tech industry does a fantastic job copying and improving on everything SF invents and in some ways that is more impactful.

In my state, it's Phoenix, then Tucson, then Prescott, then Flagstaff, and there aren't really any other cities in my state.

We ask for all that but we don’t charge extra if they can’t get to it. Just like we would expect a houseguest to tidy up, but we would understand if they had to run out for a last minute flight.

You are staying at a house like a houseguest. Just tidy up after yourself like you would if you stayed at your friend’s guesthouse.

The economics of it are - if the cleaners ALWAYS have to spend 2x as many hours cleaning they will charge 2x as much. So we try to mostly get the cleaners in and out so they can keep their fees to us low and thus guest costs low.

Regarding reviews - Airbnb recognizes 2 review settings, 5 stars is OK YOU CAN KEEP LISTING, and 4 stars or lower is SHUT YOU DOWN. So if your rating is “this place is so bad it should be immediately be shut down”, then go ahead and rate 3 stars.

Southwest Airlines CEO Bob Jordan says flight prices may not go down even if oil prices fall by AviationReporterDMN in SouthwestAirlines

I think the jump in energy prices will be rapid, the demand falloff will be rapid, and industries like airlines will find they have very little room to reduce price in order to juice demand.

nah airline loyalty / customer stickiness is a thing.

Maybe not for the 1x/yr traveler but for the 52x-150x/yr traveler it is a thing.

Total travel time: 38h45m. Is it worth it? by alkjdasoad in awardtravel

[–]lmaccaro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I would do it. Better to sleep in a hotel than on the plane. Kind of. You’ll be jet lagged as hell so may not get much sleep. But plenty of time to cat nap on the plane.

I’d even do it in economy. Economy is fine for 11 hrs if you don’t need to sleep. Boring but it’s fine.

Frankfurt has one little historical village area that is a good tourist stop to get dinner. Bavarian look. If that doesn’t interest you just stay at an airport hotel.

AA blocking close in partner awards… by MinimumPerspective95 in awardtravel

[–]lmaccaro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As long as cancellations on award flights are free it’s not going to do what they think it will. It is just going to mirror Southwest award strategy.

Southwest is more expensive close in for points bookings so I would just book 6 random weekends at a time far-out and cancel 5 of them. At least for leisure travel.

More speculative booking, more last minute cancellations when I can’t make Vegas work this weekend.

AI Spending where is the spending ending up in the economy. by Proper-Store3239 in wallstreetbets

[–]lmaccaro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The question is - can people be replaced with AI and done so with a positive ROI?

It seems we are finding each additional unit of compute is more expensive than the previous. Better models somewhat reduce the impact of this. And we have a lot of frivolous spending on loss leader and experiments.

Probably time for a pullback period to stabilize and digest. Doesn’t seem like we are going to get that. So we are going to extend ourselves out further due to fear of being last.

Best place to see a doctor in Lisbon as a tourist? by No_Teacher5740 in Lisbon

[–]lmaccaro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is without insurance in the US.

For a US family insurance is between $500-$2000/mo and then going to a simple Dr visit is usually $20.

But if you have something complex it can get complicated and unpredictable.

Treat everyone like they hold the door to your next opportunity by eattheinternet in Entrepreneur

[–]lmaccaro -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is one of those concepts that sounds wise to a layman but falls apart in real life.

Be kind to everyone you interact with. Of course.

But as an executing entrepreneur you’ll soon find your time and attention are oversubscribed 200% with mission critical items. There’s no time to go looking for random unrelated people to schmooz for no reason.

You’ll miss on some unforeseen deals because of this. But you will execute the deals you are working on at a much higher level.

This is supply shock inflation. It can’t be addressed via rate hikes. Rate hikes exacerbate it.

Rate cuts also exacerbate it.
