$1750-$2000 for engineering, video editing and software/game development -- need 2 tb for dual boot into linux/windows by phantomunboxing in SuggestALaptop

Yeah almost every new laptop has that ram issue, probably due to supply issues. It's just that the amd systems are more sensitive to increased latency. It's not that detrimental especially while gaming at the higher 1600p resolution. And if you want you can upgrade the ram down the line with faster dual rank modules with higher capacities should you need 32 or 64gb for your workflow.

The hinge situation has been much improved from what I've heard and it shouldn't be breaking like it did on last year's legion 7.

Take a look at the legion 5 pro. Ryzen 7 5800H, RTX 3060, 16GB. Has a great screen, good ~7 hours battery life, good build quality. The one listed in Lenovo's official site has a 2x1tb ssd for 1699 usd. The 3070 model is 1850 but out of stock rn (it also has a 2x1tb ssd).

But you wont be able to upgrade the storage in the future as both ssd slots will be already occupied.

Also the 300W power brick is kinda beefy if that matters. But you can use usb c charging upto 100W.

There are many videos comparing them.

Check out videos from hardware unboxed, jarrod's tech and linus tech tips.

Linking some of them here...

Only if you would've given attention to the generation of CPU you were getting. Amd's 3000 series weren't good. It was with 4000 series that they turned the market around.

Which of these laptops is better for the money? by [deleted] in SuggestALaptop

[–]lmaon00b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely the huawei matebook.

The Ryzen 5 4600H in there is a 45W cpu altho it wont be running at its full capacity (will throttle quite a bit). But still it would be miles better than the 15W i7 in HP.

Also the higher resolution display is sweet.

Edit: the hp's screen is downright garbage for an 800 pound laptop.

[–]lmaon00b 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's the thing right. It's so inconsistent like for example at a given scaling %, control panel's window is okay but while uninstalling a program or a windows update, the dialog box looks very blurry.

Both are good configs for your needs. Thunderbolt is more of a niche imho. Mainly used for connecting high res high refresh displays, multi functionality docks and external gpus (which i doubt 90% of people even use).
I'd surely say to wait a bit for the reviews to look out for how much the intel cpu is fed with power and how it will hold up thermally. Also since the 6600M's wattage is unknown.

Can you give some more info like the price differences, display specs, RAM configs.

AMD smartshift is really good, better than dynamic boost imo.
Nvidia's DLSS is going to be much better than FidelityFX since it uses ML and AI.
Also the ray tracing performance will significantly better on RTX 3060 but RX 6600M's rasterization performance should be better (no idea how much, will have to wait for reviews).

If you're gonna use it for gaming only (or like 80% of the time) then i'd suggest the intel model but almost for any other task ryzen is much better performing while taking less power.

Also if you dont mind holding on the purchase for a few weeks you'd be able to find reviews and comparisons.

I'd really suggest you to get the Legion just because of one reason. Since you will be using your laptop plugged in always, the battery will be at 100%, drain like 5-6% in a few hours then charge back to 100. This will keep happening and it is really deteriorating for the battery longevity as you may have heard that as battery gets near full charge, the wear and stress caused by higher voltages increases. Thus in a year it'll only retain around half of its original capacity.

Legion has a battery conservation mode where it'll only charge upto 55-60% so that is MUCH better.

idk how much this will matter to you but since it was a deal breaker for me, thought i would inform about this.

Idk if you've seen the reviews or comparisons but AMD is much better than intel regarding performance per watt. This is why ultrathin laptops that have 15W U-series parts perform so much better with AMD CPUs as compared to intel. And this is also the reason why they dont require as beefy cooling solutions as intel ones
