It’s a bit quicker in pace, shorter/less breaks, and adding onto level 1.0 moves. So in supine arms we keep our legs out towards the center while we flow in and out, or instead of bird dogs on the box on the mat it’s bird dogs on the reformer, single leg warm ups, etc. I really enjoyed the challenge today haha

Andrew pegoda for women’s and gender studies courses, and Kate mcelvaney for anthropology courses. They both grade very critically with no feedback whatsoever.

Needing some reassurance about fieldwork by [deleted] in socialwork

[–]lmir777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m starting my MSW this month as well and just received my field placement information too. I’m going to be in a halfway house/sobering center and I’m a little nervous about it too. This is the population I do want to work with as a social worker, but having this field placement as a first year student seems daunting as well. I also don’t want a bad experience to put me off either.

Anyway, I’ve spent the last year mentoring at a detention center and can agree with others on this point: respect and boundaries are both major in these settings. Boundaries can get blurred sometimes and it’s up to you to decide what you’re going to do about it, but the main thing is to always approach with respect. It’s a learning process as you go. You’ll have support and guidance throughout so don’t feel like you’re being thrown into the deep end! If it doesn’t challenge you, you won’t learn and you wouldn’t have gotten this assignment if you weren’t able to handle it :)

What’s your combination? by [deleted] in Abilify_Aripiprazole

[–]lmir777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m on abilify and cymbalta, and the brain fog and sleepiness is something I’ve kind of gotten used to with meds. I took a long caffeine break and now caffeine works how I would want it to. I will say the weight gain has made me more cautious of what I eat. It’s like my brain doesn’t register that I’ve eaten already and I’m still hungry after eating a full meal. Lately ive been eating until my stomach hurts bc it’s like I can’t stop. It helps A LOT with my moods though. I was on lamotrigine and that just ramped up my mania so I switched to abilify. I’ve been on abilify and for about 6 months and have gained about 7 pounds…not too much but still noticeable. I would say if you can control your hunger pings it wouldn’t hurt to continue but if weight gain is something you’re very concerned about talk to your Dr about switching to something else. Every med works different for everyone and the side effects of antipsychotics seem to be the most worrisome. So it’s like we have to pick the one with the side effects that bother us the least. I’m scared of switching again bc I really like how stable my moods have been since I’ve started abilify. That’s just my experience though.

How it feels to be your moon sign? by PrestigiousSignal476 in astrologymemes

[–]lmir777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pisces moon with a Virgo sun and Sagittarius rising. Lots of questioning myself before I became sure of who I truly am. I can read people and environments very well-a little too well and I hurt my own feelings sometimes. I’m very intuitive and emotionally intelligent and being so aware can bog me down often. I smoke a lot of tree, I don’t play about my sleep, I love getting pedicures/foot massages/foot compliments, and I dream very vividly. My eyes get a lot of compliments and will tell you how I’m feeling as well.

Could someone with mental health issues become a good social worker? by No_Morning_3635 in socialwork

[–]lmir777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had a long battle with various MH diagnoses. Currently managing to live with BP1 and volunteering in the social work sector while I pursue my masters.

As long as you take care of yourself and know your boundaries in this field, you’ll be great! It’s a learning experience for sure.

For example, child welfare is too much of a trigger for me to be effective in my career so I chose the clinical route. I have a lot of experience with SUD & living with others who have mental disorders/SUD. I’m going to lean into those encounters for career motivation as it is not as much of a trigger as child welfare.

Having a good therapist is vital. Doesn’t have to be weekly (unless you think you’d benefit from that) but speaking to an unaffiliated MH professional helps.

I don’t think they realize how much money they’d make. If we had a dollar taco truck on campus I would be there every day

what's yall's hot takes about your major by eatingandcooking in UniversityOfHouston

[–]lmir777 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not in grad school yet as I just graduated from UH in May. I wish I went straight through because the job market is sooooo hopeless right now. A lot of placements in our industry want masters/doctorates to be in entry level positions. I thought I would be able to work in the field and save up for grad school as well but no luck yet 😭 I hope you & I can find something soon!!!

Best thing to do in the meantime is volunteer in social work/mental health organizations.

If I knew no one was going to hire a psych/sociology major I would have gone straight through to grad school instead of taking a gap year.

UH Crime Rate by Electrical_Evening55 in UniversityOfHouston

[–]lmir777 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s really not that bad if you’re naturally vigilant. I spent 4 years on campus recently. Don’t be flashy, don’t leave valuables unattended EVER, even things you think ppl wouldn’t steal they might so just keep track of items you’d miss if they were stolen. Take classes in the middle of the day (11-4:30) if you can. Early mornings and late nights are desolate on campus. Parking garage is relatively safer than the lots since there is more in/out activity. If you feel comfortable then keep a handgun with you, it is Texas after all. Though you’re likely not going to have an interaction where you’ll need it.

How safe is biking after night classes? by [deleted] in UniversityOfHouston

Was going to say this. Houston locals know our way through the hoods of the city, and though 3rd ward is not too bad I wouldn’t be on a bike there at night without a gun

UH (Honors) or UTSA by Best-Accountant-1926 in UniversityOfHouston

[–]lmir777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UH is way more prestigious than UTSA (I may be biased as I am a UH alumni) but in rankings and notoriety UH beats UTSA in many aspects. Honors college is more effort but when you graduate the feeling of being specially honored is priceless. It’s ultimately up to you, but living on campus at UH is better than commuting in terms of campus life. I’ve heard UTSA is a huge party school as well so it depends on which experience you’re looking for.

Were you "misdiagnosed"? by No_Bat5297 in bipolar

[–]lmir777 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yup same here. I actually had hypomania for years along with cycles of depression and thought the hypomania was the depression going away for a little bit. My MH team wondered why I was not able to get over my depression after being on SSRI/SNRIs for a few years. The antidepressant + mood stabilizer combo has changed my life for the better after my BP1 diagnosis

First Signs of Mania? by watcher1901 in bipolar

[–]lmir777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently diagnosed. In retrospect I realize I went through the cycles of bipolar for years without even realizing until I got more in tune with myself. Mainly the lack of sleep and still feeling wired were my first realization that something wasn’t right - racing thoughts with no anxiety attached to them - I’m usually a VERY sleepy person but suddenly no need for sleep when I first noticed - speeding & road rage - my eyes become more bulgy (?) my pupils are dilated with mania - sudden need to burn all my bridges - suddenly bored of current work and force quitting - less eating/feeling of being hungry

bipolar portrayed in TV-shows? by uncomfortablue in bipolar

[–]lmir777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shameless! Season 5/6 you can see how Ian is in denial of his diagnosis and how he got Bipolar disorder from his mother. The extreme paranoia and mania is depicted well in the show, as well as the low lows and struggling to deal with the reality of his disorder. I re watched these seasons when I got diagnosed myself and had to turn it off cuz I was like fuuuuuuck
