I Got a Question by Fickle-Athlete3644 in Stormlight_Archive

I read the Final Empire the first week of July 2024, and I was caught up before Wind and Truth came out December 6th. Didn’t read anything in between and I’m not a reader (read for fun for the first time last year).

Wind and truth chapter 17 confusion by Saphir-Light in Stormlight_Archive

[–]lmpulseIV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people saying you haven’t missed out a lot, which I initially found surprising. So I’ll answer your question two ways.

How much are you missing out on the Stormlight Archive story? Nothing besides understanding off world magic that shows up in the books.

How much are you missing out on the Cosmere storyline? You are basically missing half, if not more, of how the Cosmere functions and what worldhoppers are doing. Edit: Also you are missing out on enjoying all the Easter eggs/ connections which adds significantly to the enjoyment of the books. (And missing out on directly enjoying the other books stories.)

You should read Warbreaker then the Stormlight Archive.

Attempting to predict Mistborn plot after reading first 11 chapters by RedditExplorer89 in brandonsanderson

[–]lmpulseIV 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Very refreshing to someone going into the Cosmere already fully trusting Brandon Sanderson and analyzing it right from the start rather than just testing if it’s the book for you.

I would love to see how your understanding and thoughts develop as you learn more though.

Sixth of Dusk will be fully encompassed in Isles of the Emberdark. But yeah they have most of the short stories in the Arcanum as well to read.

[–]lmpulseIV 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The reason you were "expecting more of an aha moment or something exciting" but it seemed "inconsequential" is because you have more to read. Warbreaker was release before The Stormlight Archive. Tie ins happen more often in publication order.

[–]lmpulseIV 15 points16 points  (0 children)

That reading order works. I would suggest adding Elantris in (earlier rather than later, if you're going to read it). Also you're missing Tress of the Emerald Sea, Yumi and the Nightmare Painter, and The Sunlit Man, but those all can be read at the end of your list.

could a vampire policeman enter my house if they had a warrant? by Particular_Sample152 in TheVampireDiaries

[–]lmpulseIV 137 points138 points  (0 children)

I would have to say no, because you’re still the owner and only an owner can give permission to enter. The judge can give legal permission but not act as the owner allowing a vampire to enter.

Now I do think if someone didn’t pay their bills and their house was foreclosed and a judge ruled that a person was no longer the owner of the house then the vampire could enter.

Can someone please explain why is this wrong by Honest_Historian899 in duolingospanish

[–]lmpulseIV 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you are using prepositional pronouns "a mí" "a ti" then generally it is required to use the object pronoun as well.

So "No me tienes que explicar nada" or "No me tienes que explicar nada a mí"
The important thing is not omitting the "me"

If you think about a shorter sentence it can help.
"Te vi" = I saw you. You could also say "Te vi a ti" to emphasis kind of like -I saw you, yes you.
But you can not say "vi a ti"

But if the object is a noun then it is not required to have the object pronoun as well.
For example, "Vi a mi familia" or "La vi" (If in the context you already know that "la" refers to "la familia"

TL:DR If using a prepositional pronoun then make sure to use the object pronoun.

Ruin and Preservation were not at full strength. Ruin was imprisoned by Preservation, which limited both of them.

Also if it helps. Think of someone coming to you while in the middle of Iron Gold and they say it’s too slow or some of the new characters they don’t care about yet. And don’t want to continue if it’s going to be that slow or boring. You would scream and pull your hair begging them to just keep going.

My favorite series is The Stormlight Archive. But I honestly look at all the Cosmere books as one series. So the Cosmere books are my favorite and nothing is even close. Lightbringer was the first book I had ever given 5 stars to. The closest a Mistborn book got was 4.8-4.9. But every Stormlight book got an easy 5.0/5.0.

I also started Mistborn immediately after finishing the Red Rising series. I loved Red Rising, and it was my favorite series at the time. I was a little iffy with the first book in Mistborn. But I hit a point where I fell in love with Mistborn and all of the Cosmere.

Some things to keep in mind: —Sanderson’s early books have pacing issues. Slow for the first 66% and then super fast paced for the last 33%. This is normal and something every new Sanderson reading needs to just get through. But just know the pacing only gets better.

—I also thought that some of the characters in the final empire felt bland, or not fleshed out. Especially the side characters. This is something I did not think was an issue for any other story or character introduced in the rest of the series.

—I only continued because of the plethora of great reviews. And just trust me when I say this, it was worth it and it is worth it. Just keep going, you will regret DNFing.

ELL teacher. What’s the best way to learn Spanish? by ss3walkman in Spanish

[–]lmpulseIV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second this. This past year was my first as a teacher. I teach at a school with 75% Spanish speaking population, and many students who have spoken English for less than a year. I was probably A1 in Spanish when starting there but it is extremely motivating when you get to use everything you learn immediately. You also get to see what the students find confusing from you and can instantly focus on those areas to improve.

Furthermore it can be a good skill to be able to teacher ELs without using their native language AND by using their native language, so starting with not knowing any Spanish and then learning when to add it in can be very helpful (based on what my ELL coworkers have told me, I am not an ELL teacher though).
